Nishankly wrote:Yup, its widespread in England and I am now quite sure RG, Jay and Firenze all had it. 60% of our cases in India are from expats and students who've returned from the UK. Hell France and Italian expats or students have next to no cases.
What a shit government.
I don't know about that, I mean assuming it's really wide spread and all our posters had it. The vast majority of tested people turn out negative and that's when most nations are only testing people with moderate-or-worse symptoms. I'm sure the real number globally is in the millions, probably tens of millions, meaning tens of times more than the current confirmed count of some 430.000 - but that's still a small percentage of population.

There was a report about a teenager dying in the USA. I was thinking, usually, young people don't have preconditions but in the case of USA, the amount of obese children/teenagers or the ones with diabetes is very high, almost half of adults are obese. High blood pressure and diabetis are some of the common comorbidities observed in Covid-19 cases with complications.
USA and UK might be hit harder than expected throughout all of the age groups due to those reasons even though the average age should be lower.

The US is 50 different countries basically... and obesity rates vary widely depending on the state. For example, California has a 25% overweight rate (obese is the next level) while it's well over 35% in the country... has something to do with climate honestly. Warmer places in the US = less weight issues.
The case you're referring to... the kid did a lot of vaping. His lungs were weak.

I get you, in warmer states, they're outside more often but lots of vaping isn't a precondition, not at that age.

50 different countries not so much.
I'd say 5 distinct regions that could be considered countries:
West Coast
Alaska
Hawaii
Midwest
North East
South east
Like Mississippi,Alabama, and us in Georgia are pretty much the same.
Same can be said for Idaho and Iowa.
And the amalgamation of New england in MA,RI,DE,PA

Lungs are not a weak organ, they are bloody warriors. It can take many years until Lung shows any kind of minimal damage. I doubt vaping got him killed.

5210 new cases and 683 new deaths in Italy. Protezione Civile chief Borrelli, the person usually holding the daily press conference, is at home with a fever, while the former chief Bertolaso is now hospitalized in Milan after having tested positive to the virus

I was going back and forth with that, and then I realized outside of LA is Phoenix really that much different from a San Bernadino in california or a Santa fe in New mexico.
Outside of the world class cities california really just blends in with new mexico, denver,Utah,Arizona.
I'd say a bigger jump would be the PNW area of Oregon and Seattle...but even that blends with North cali.

Louisiana is pretty much south east through and through.
Texas is on the border.

Could be considered countries how? All these regions learn the same history, eat many common foods, speak the same language, practice the same sports, watch the same tv shows, etc.
Every country that is sufficiently large has sub-cultures that differ significantly between regions. That doesn't mean they are equivalent to different countries. Exceptions can be made for things like French Canada, Scotland, Catalonia, Basque Country, etc where they do have a legitimate claim at being called a "like a different country".

Different countries because its significantly different.
I dont speak the same language in anything other than the most base of ways as someone in Hawaii, and our history is very different.
A person in Hawaii never experienced 9/11 live in person the way we did on the mainland, nor have to worry about what the average person in continental US does. Same way we get a few inches of snow down here and people die and everything shuts down, but up north you guys handle it with ease. That is what made someone like Obama such a unicorn compared to the average black person in the US who grew up in the 60's and 70's under the constant weight of pressure that came with it. He lived in a bubble.
We also learn the same history as pretty much anybody growing up under the western sphere. The average Mexican in Sinaloa has more in common with the US mainland than the average Hawaiian, who most likely is of Japanese ancestry if the census records are correct about population there.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread - Part 2
I'd also submit we learn history VERY different down here then the way you all learn it up north.
Like the civil war for one. We were taught General Sherman, who is a true American hero, was a bad guy and went too far when he burned down our state to bring liberty to us. We were also taught that slavery wasnt the cause of the civil war but some BS like states rights when slavery, when the supposition(even among them) of the superiority of the White race over the Black was in the Confederate constitution. And state rights meant nothing when they tried to supersede the rights of states when they realized the north was kicking their ass. We also learn less about the industrialization age of america and more about the dust storms and failure and rebirth of American agriculture than they teach up north. Education is very region specific once you get away from hard subjects like science and math.

Sure I'll give you Hawaii. What about the rest? I think that's a much harder argument to make faithfully.

It becomes an argument of what makes a national identity in that case.
I've been (un)fortunate enough to see a lot of parts of this country and honestly when I go somewhere like Los Angeles(a place where my family has significant ties long before we came to Georgia) it feels like a different country.
The accent is different
The people look different
The trees are different
The climate is different
The style is different
I mean....perhaps that is superficial, but thats what people view as identity.
A person from barranquilla would probably feel the same about one in Medallion in Colombia, but the feeling is there. Your identity is tied to your region in the vast majority of your interactions. Nationhood is just that on a bigger scale.

We've only been on lock down for about a week, and had mild restrictions for like 10 days, it's too early to tell so far.
