(Warning: long post ahead!)

Obviously this summer is not working out the way we'd all have hoped. I think Wenger and the club are to be held accountable for their actions both good and bad. Come September 2, we may be sitting here thinking "whew Arsene left it late but made some great moves in the market." Or we could be doing a massive collective facepalm. Or something in between.

Something like this Marica non-story just prods at the frustration of Arsenal fans. As varied as our opinions about Wenger and certain players are, it's a pretty universal sentiment to hope there are great (and likely also expensive) signings asap. Sooner the better. And if we could time travel back a month or two, great. It ain't fun waiting.

But a few things still keep me guardedly optimistic.

The deadwood is pretty much all moved on, except Bendtner who is like a tick from hell, and Diaby who we all knew would be unable to be moved on this summer due to injury. Plus a number of young. Players have been put out to loan so we don't to fear the likes of lots of unready teenagers trying to fill in too soon, which was the situation in August 2011. For the sake of numbers alone, there must be senior signings.

I am also buoyed by the fact that Arsenal have made reputably verified bids - just nothing successful yet. Bernard, Lars Bender, and Suarez ... probably Luis Gustavo (didn't Bild report this?) ... Fabregas situation we all know was at least monitored closely ... probably a few others we don't know a thing about. I don't buy the line that it's all just a PR ploy. Criticize Arsenal's negotiating tactics, sure. But I don't think these bids were just for lols.

Finally Arsenal have been pretty proactive in replenishing the youth teams and potential fringe first teamers. Crowley, Sanogo, one or two from La Masia, trials to Sebastian Perez and (maybe) Abdulrahman. More teenage names touted every week, from England and all over. A lot of well-regarded prospects here.

So it seems to me that something is being planned. The most impressive and expensive parts just haven't come off yet. Who knows if, and to what extent, they will be successful. It could turn out something like the same old depressing story. Or it could be awesome.
