For me Bella is a bad Ellie. It could be partly down to the script which I have heard diverges in some aspects from the game. But I am of the opinion that they could've done so much better finding someone else. It feels like a different take on Ellie compared to the show whereas Joel feels exactly the same.

And we're talking about young Ellie, it could get worse further down the line as the character grows up. Relationship between her and Joel also doesnt feel as organic as in the games

Secondary characters get a pass, but she is front and center of the show, so it stings. As for her overall ability as an actress I am not convinced either, and I have seen her in other things than this show and game of thrones. It's a shame really because this show had potential to be one of top 5-10 ever.

In my opinion, even without those expectations, she is just unfit for this role. Then again I thought she was annoying as hell in game of thrones too.

They clearly wanted to separate the show from the games in some aspects and their depiction of Ellie is sadly one of those things. The show being amazing in itself saves it, because Bella definitely isnt capable of carrying it herself

I did read a discussion on the internet where a small group of fans were initially annoyed that the role of Joel was filled by a hispanic actor, suspecting that was an indication that this show would get a more elaborate, woke treatment.

But I think that ultimately, everyone is happy that the role was given to him. They did get the lead role right for the Witcher as well, and I think both shows would’ve been likely to underperform if they had prioritized race over merit for that particular role, which Mystats rightly mentions is the frontfigures/spotlights of their respective shows. And Joel is a Texan in the games as well, he could very well be of hispanic descent.

By now, even the wokest of directors, producers and screenwrighters must have taken note that the games and tv shows that go all the way in injecting politics into their product end up in economic catastrophy. I personally don’t appreciate it when they only go halfway there either, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be carried by other positive qualities or respect towards a brilliant source material.

Right? I be watching twd and here even secondary or tertiary characters are better. Truth be told I only tolerate Bella because the source material is top tier and Pedro is father, period but that may obviously change..

Yep. Many of the fancastings prior to the premiere had Kaitlyn Dever as Ellie

The casting directors must have a decent sense of humor doing a switcheroo like that.
