Re: The Coronavirus Thread - Part 3
As much as I would love for everybody to get vaccinated, it must never become compulsory. People should have the right to either take the vaccine or not, and medical care should be available for all, even the anti-vaxxers. You can't leave them to die or refuse to give them intensive care treatment just because they refused to get vaccinated.

Refusing treatment altogether is quite extreme but I think there should be a price to pay for that.
Its not like flat-earth idiots, this type of theorists is harmful and purposefully/willingly putting in danger the rest of the population.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread - Part 3
Not all anti-vaxxers are conspiracy nutjobs though, some of them have legit concerns.
The process for vaccine development is long and complex, often lasting years and even decades, because they have to carefully and thoroughly test the vaccine's short and long term effects. So when the government rolls out a vaccine in record time, you'll inevitably have a few skeptics questioning its safety in the long term.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread - Part 3
This type of vaccine has been in development for 25 years though at this point. Its relatively new but it has already been tested. Its not like they came up with it last night.
The long process of vaccine testing is mostly due to financial aspects of it, the fact that we get Corona vaccine so fast is because they've poured billions into its research over the past year whereas normally nobody spends so much money on the process and thus it takes more time.

we'll realise how much of a fascist world we live in depending on whether this vaccination gets made mandatory or not

Yeah nothing says fascism like socialised life saving medicine being mandatory so that a bunch of conspiracy theorists don't kill themselves.

Official assessment of the British Wuhan virus variant:
https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/publications-data/threat-assessment-brief-rapid-increase-sars-cov-2-variant-united-kingdom
Meanwhile, lots of Brits are stranded in airports, a bit like a "feel" for the post brexit era.
By the way, scientists have confirmed, it's possible to get sick multiple times with the Wuhan virus if during the first infection not enough reaction/antigens were produced by the body. Usually, the immune response is stronger the second time. Most prominent example is German kickboxing champion Marie Lang. She lost 10% of her lung capacity in the process.

The euro tunnel is allegedly only closed for 48 hours, but between this variant and brexit talks going nowhere, wonder when they will open up again?

Re: The Coronavirus Thread - Part 3
The US reaches another level of peak-hypocrisy as the very members of government that worked to undermine and deny COVID are now first in line to get vaccinated. Sickening.
On to more positive news, I have a friend who is a nurse and she is already vaccinated. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Apparently the EU has dragged its feet and now does not have enough vaccines to achieve herd immunity. Could the US end up looking like the best COVID manager after all?

Re: The Coronavirus Thread - Part 3
Eh, that article was kind of clickbaity, once you follow that line of argument a bit, it turns out that it's just that BioNTech ended up saying they'd produce a bit less vaccines than they thought during their first 3 months because the suppliers didn't come through, and the article was written before the Moderna vaccine was approved IIRC (the article is 5 days old by now).
I mean I'm always open to the idea that bureaucracy moves slowly, but I think in this case it's pretty much a non-issue, can't order stuff that can't be produced.

I'm more concerned we can't protect our elderly. Almost 1000 people a day die as of now in Germany. What a f*****g disgrace!

Re: The Coronavirus Thread - Part 3
Starting to read a lot more articles and hear a lot more stories about hospital beds running out here in the US, looks like we're back at capacity and that's before the x-mas/NYE bump we'll surely get.

^ The same seems to be happening in the UK + hospitals stopping normal treatments, even cancer surgeries. A comprehensive national lockdown in the UK seems like the right move to me, but instead they're just debating things over and trying to do the bare minimum.

Vaccines might not work on the new South African strain called 501.V2. The changes in its RNA-proteins seem to be substantional.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread - Part 3
Hancock says we do not know yet whether people will need to have the coronavirus vaccine more than once, as with the flu vaccine. He says he thinks people will probably need to get revaccinated. He says this might have to happen every six months, or it might have to happen every year.
Re-vaccinated every 6 to 12 months? Fuck that, I'm getting my two jabs when the time comes, but no way I'm going to get a covid vaccine every six months. (Obviously what Matt Hancock says - or the medical experts who have told him this say - might not prove to be true, but still).

Re: The Coronavirus Thread - Part 3
All countries who did well during the first wave in march/april completly lost control of the situation. The second wave is much worse than the first one. UK and Germany recorded highest number of deaths per day (1200+) which is sad.

As much as i'd like to blame the government, it's human nature which is probably the biggest factor in this uncontrollable surge.
