Infernal Affairs is definitely the better movie, but then again I watched it first. Saying Departed is the better one is saying like Last Man Standing is better than Yojimbo.El Gunner wrote:Freeza wrote:Finally watched Inferfal Affairs.
Pretty mediocre movie and improved leaps and bounds by Scorsese.
Seems like an absolute hipster take to rate it higher than The Departed.
Editing and pace is so fast you don't know what's going on most of the time, you just know there's supposed to be two moles

Preferred the no love triangle in IA and the ending.
Mark Wahlberg was a highlight in Departed though.

Wahlberg was The highlight in the film.
This is what happens when you are directed by the best director of all time, he brings out such in you.
Departed is called overrated by many but I beg to differ. Culturally important film and dauntlessly directed. Superb performances.

Which one you watch first will affect your opinion a lot I think. Although I do like the americanized version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo more than the swedish version, and I watched the original first.

The American version is a hundred times better. And I think that is another hipster take people have. A lot of people seem to think they have to value the original more because it's a European film.
The Fincher film is just no much better, which isn't a surprise given the director. Still sad he didn't get to do more. The Swedish/Danish one doesn't have any style what so ever. It looks like the average made for tv movie.
Niels Arden Oplev isn't the most interesting director. He made a pretty great, generic film last year called Daniel though. Best Toby Kebbell performance in years, and I appreciate him for that.

Wahlberg was so fucking good in that film. That performance is absolutely iconic, and still talked about today. Still feel he should've won the Oscar. Either him or Eddie Murphy even though people hardly talk about Eddie's incredible performance. The fact Alan Arkin won is stupid.

Yeah the style is the biggest improvement in the Fincher version. Sad he couldn't complete the trilogy.Freeza wrote:Harmonica wrote:Which one you watch first will affect your opinion a lot I think. Just watched Kingdom of Heaven again, damn it's underrated movie, now especially. In release it suffered from two things. Hack Job cut that was fixed by the Directors Cut and Legolas being the main actor. But now there's enough time passed, that Bloom doesn't feel typecasted anymore.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
I don't think the movie is underrated. I thought it was entertaining but I couldn't overlook the historical inaccuracies of the plot.
Even when I tried to ignore those and just just focus on the movie itself, I still had trouble following the dialogue which I thought needed a little work:
I mean, really?

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
Freeza I feel the lack of screen time he had may have been a factor but the minutes he was on he out-did 3 other top of the line actors and in much less time. Very much agreed.
@Harmonica Theatrical cut was butchered but the Directors Cut is so much more better than the original its astounding. Most directors cuts are fillers but these were crucial elements cut and with the actual cut it is a superb film. A lot of rewatch value and terrific score. Loved it and one of Ridley Scott's best. He is at his best with historical productions anyhow.

Eddie Murphy was just soooo fucking good too. I feel bad for him. That movie is not great, but his performance is. Much better than Jennifer Hudson who was one of the worst performances in that film and only won because she sung a song that was incredible, that could've been sung just as well by Beyonce, who was acting a lot better in that film.
On the topic of Wahlberg, he was by far the best part of The Departed and rightfully the only one nominated.
Departed acting ranks:
1. Mark Wahlberg
2. The Rat
3. Vera Farmiga
4. Matt Damon
5. Alec Baldwin
.
.
.
6. Leo

That is one hot take but replace Damon with Jack Nicolson and there's my own personal list. Very much agreed on Farmiga. Subtle performance and drove the character to its purpose well.

I won't disrespect the legend Jack with comparisons. That dude is has a special place in my heart for always sleeping with his mouth open while wearing sunglasses during Lakers games

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
At the time I didn't even know it was a true story, other than crusades and such, so I wasn't so invested historically. Although historical inaccuracy almost never bothers me, I don't remember any film off the top of my head that bothered. Isn't Braveheart also highly inaccurate, yet it doesn't get such bad rep.The Demon of Carthage wrote:I don't think the movie is underrated. The score is fantastic I'm playing it right now, and yes the film has a great rewatch value. Prometheus is another underrated Ridley Scott movie I think. It's full of horror cliches, some off them god afwul, but it's still very cool movie with interesting story. Could've been much better though.Arquitecto wrote:@Harmonica Theatrical cut was butchered but the Directors Cut is so much more better than the original its astounding. Also as I was looking Kingdom of Heaven score, found this. 1080p Directors Cut version with subtitles. Don't know how that has survived 1,5 years in youtube. If you haven't seen it, watch it before it gets removed.

The Departed. Re-watched the living crap out of that one.

It's probably going to be the same as your favorite movies. Mine is Once Upon a Time in the West. I pretty much remember all of the dialogue, although mostly because it's the only movie with perfect dialogue, non wasted and all epic.
