Paratici: "Ramsey? We signed him because he's a player that's different to the ones we have. Has more technique, but less defensive & tactical. I think Ramsey has never found his best position, because he hasn't played as a Mezzala in a 3-man CM. That's his position."
In some respects, we didn't have the chance to use Ramsey this way because he always had to play behind Ozil, and Ozil couldn't play anywhere else but no. 10. We misused Ramsey for a long time but he had too much ability to leave out the side. CM in a double pivot or RW was a compromise that didn't get the best out of him.
Meh. Ramsey was an Arsenal player long before Özil came, and I seem to remember at least a couple of seasons where Wenger used a 4-3-3, or 4-1-4-1? Wasn't it something like Flamini-Cazorla-Ramsey at some point?

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
Coquelin - Cazorla - Ramsey or Song - Arteta - Ramsey were our best balanced midfield.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
I don‘t remember Ramsey playing much with Coquelin/Cazorla, it was usually them two and Özil in front of them.
The people at Juve are going to be incredibly disappointed if they think Ramsey was somehow misunderstood all this time. He‘s an okay player, no matter where you play him.ä, no where near deserving the money they are paying.

They played together at least that one time we beat Manchester City away 2-0. The team was actually set up to be tight and defensive and changed to match opposition tactics which was the most tactical Wenger has been in his last 5 years.

Would love him but we won't sign a RB for 40m. If only he was a left back...

Apparently, Bayern are interested in signing Xavier Amaechi from us. Reports suggest they see him as the next "Sancho".
Bukayo Saka, Amaechi and Tyreece John-Jules were all watched by scouts during a recent u23 game. Seems our youth is attracting a lot of interest from abroad.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
The good thing is that a lot of our best youngsters appear to be wingers right now, and it's a position that we are sorely lacking quality in at the moment. We have the opportunity to give these guys chances which will hopefully fend off the lure of leaving before we see what they can do.
In regards to a right back: personally, I think Wan-Bissaka will cost too much money to be worth it given his current hype. We do need another RB to actually compete with Bellerin for the starting birth, someone who is more resolute defensively and who can produce a better end product in offensive areas. However, breaking the bank on fullbacks rarely leads to notable improvement in most teams and though this kid has had a strong year with lots of potential to improve, Bellerin himself is quite young. I would rather spend 1/2 the funds on a more experienced player, even if we only get a few years out of him. This position represents the perfect opportunity for our recruitment team to prove how shrewd they can be.

What do you mean by "apparently", @Jay? That the Mirror wrote it or do you have better sources?

It came from a guy called James Benge, who works for Football London. He's a bit of a newer name on the scene, so I don't know if he's reliable or not yet.

In other news:
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/mar/08/monchi-arsenal-roma-technical-director?CMP=share_btn_tw
Monchi is clearly the club's no. 1 guy for the technical director role, so there's a good chance he will end up here. It'll be interesting to see how he adapts to bigger expectations should he join.
His first job should be to rescue Pablo Sarabia from the sinking ship that is Sevilla imo.

I saw the football.london item and the site looks like a Mirror branch to me, similar to how the Liverpoo Echo seems to belong to the Mirror judging from the web layout and fonts etc
What kind of outlet is that?

Nah football.london is like an london clubs exclusive site. James Benge is actually quite reliable since he is more or less always at the Emirates.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
Football London and the Liverpool Echo are owned by Reach PLC. Reach own the Daily Mirror, Manchester Evening News, the Daily Express and Daily Star. On that basis, it's not a great track record.
Football London specifically covers news for a select few London-based PL teams - predominantly Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea. They cover West Ham as well but not as frequently. They're kinda filling a niche there because unlike the Manchester clubs and the Merseyside clubs, London teams tend not have to very informed local press, especially the big ones. There's the Islington Gazette, but it's not connected closely to Arsenal at all.
Anyway, the key to this is to look at the reporter, not the outlet, and from what I've seen Football London's reporters aren't that well connected, but at the same time they're not pushing shit for a living. They're just kinda there.
In regards to the Amaechi to Bayern rumours, regardless of where it came from, I think there's an element of opportunism about it. Bayern were publicly chasing Hudson-Odoi but didn't get him, so it's rather convenient there'd be new stories about them targeting another English winger who happens to be close to a breakthrough. I don't think Bayern are that obsessed with getting an English kid in. I think they just want Hudson-Odoi because he's a great talent who could be out of contract.

Thanks for the info.
I sure hope you're right and we are ready to move on from Hudson-Odoi. The saga was embarrassing as it is, already, and the numbers we were offering already far too high.

His reputation seems to have taken a hit during his recent Roma tenure, but surely getting in Monchi as technical director must be considered a great coup for Arsenal?!

Depends on how he does. It's the biggest club he will be a part of in his life. Bigger expectations and much more pressure.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
He comes with a big reputation but it's impossible to forecast how well he will do because the success of a transfer isn't just dependent on him. Yet he'll be the one to take the flak if a new signing flops.
I'm cautious about it. Monchi himself said that it's impossible to transfer Sevilla's model, which he pretty much invented and sustained throughout his time there, anywhere else because every club is different and has their own unique characteristics. Monchi was perfect for Sevilla because he was Sevilla through-and-through, so he could really sell the club and the city to new players. He knew exactly what sort of personality was required to be successful there. At Roma, that advantage disappeared. He signed a lot of young players but might have underestimated how big Roma are and the pressure that would come with putting on that shirt. It seems like the Italians he signed understood that anyway and have done well, but guys like Kluivert, Coric and Schick have really struggled.
That advantage he might have at Arsenal is that he knows Sanllehi and has worked with Emery, so there should be unity on whatever project we're working on. On the other hand, he'd be coming into a high pressure environment because Arsenal fans aren't content with top four, even now, and there's still the underlying expectation that club competes for major honours again sometime soon. Not everyone is on board with signing kids and unknown players.
