Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
He comes with a big reputation but it's impossible to forecast how well he will do because the success of a transfer isn't just dependent on him. Yet he'll be the one to take the flak if a new signing flops.
I'm cautious about it. Monchi himself said that it's impossible to transfer Sevilla's model, which he pretty much invented and sustained throughout his time there, anywhere else because every club is different and has their own unique characteristics. Monchi was perfect for Sevilla because he was Sevilla through-and-through, so he could really sell the club and the city to new players. He knew exactly what sort of personality was required to be successful there. At Roma, that advantage disappeared. He signed a lot of young players but might have underestimated how big Roma are and the pressure that would come with putting on that shirt. It seems like the Italians he signed understood that anyway and have done well, but guys like Kluivert, Coric and Schick have really struggled.
That advantage he might have at Arsenal is that he knows Sanllehi and has worked with Emery, so there should be unity on whatever project we're working on. On the other hand, he'd be coming into a high pressure environment because Arsenal fans aren't content with top four, even now, and there's still the underlying expectation that club competes for major honours again sometime soon. Not everyone is on board with signing kids and unknown players.

The prospect of one of the following, Manolas, Under, Zaniolo, Pellegrini :$ if this goes through, that’s 3 regime shifts in 3 years, pretty crazy how we havent exploded yet.

Bring on all the Spaniards.
Brais Mendes, Ferran Torres, Fran Beltran, Mikel Oyazarbal, Unai Nunez, and Bryan Gil all needed imo.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
It's not quite exactly what happened, the young players becoming so prominent in the team is more of a happy consequence of what went down. The problem he had with Roma fans is that he downgraded the club's ambitions to Europa League, like Sevilla, with the level of players he brought in. The reliance on kids is a side effect of the real mistake, he signed too many flops. A large amount of players that missed the mark came in, leaving some of the actual promising youngsters to be forced into carrying the team.Jay29 wrote:He comes with a big reputation but it's impossible to forecast how well he will do because the success of a transfer isn't just dependent on him. 18/19: NZonzi, Pastore, Kluivert, Santon, Olsen, Coric, Marcano
17/18: Karsdorp, Moreno, Defrel, Gonalons, Schick, Silva
That's a full team of total downgrades. These either were not ready to contribute to Roma (like Kluivert or Schick) or were simply not good enough for what was needed. With guys like Salah, Alisson, Nainggolan, Strootman, Emerson, Paredes sold, and a band of scrubs signed, it fell to the kids to step in. Which is nice to see for neutrals, but terrible for fans wanting to compete at a higher level.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
Roma fans seem to hate Monchi, and I can't blame them. There was a team that challenges for the league and is a consistent performer in the CL, and here comes Monchi who makes a complete overhaul and turns them into a EL team.
I fear the same could happen to us, but at least we're not where Roma was yet, so maybe he can't make us worse with the money we have.

Update on Monchi:
Sevilla president Jose Castro said that they're in discussion to bring him back and that he was very receptive to the idea.
Makes sense that he'd rather return home than try another new country.
So our search will go on. If reports are to be believed, we'll look at an ex-player for the role now.

Monchi is better suited for smaller clubs anyway.
Still baffled that we forced Mislintat out (and without a replacement in sight), his signings have been excellent.

Quality player
a bit like Cesc at times with his final pass and overall passing range unlikely we can get him
Maddison would be my realistic signing from within PL

Arsenal are convinced about Wan-Bissaka and are considering offering Maitland-Niles or Reiss Nelson in a part-exchange deal. Arsenal scout Brian McDermott made checks on Wan-Bissaka once again last week. [@reluctantnicko]

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
Why would we consider including Reiss Nelson? Seems unbelievably stupid.
Sell Bellerin for a massive fee and get Wan-Bissaka, we don‘t need and can‘t afford both.

> Sign two of our brightest home-grown players to long-term deals
> Trade one of them away to strengthen a low priority position
Makes sense.
Seriously, if we want Wan Bissaka, then pay up. Otherwise, don't sacrifice AMN or Nelson for him. AMN is a valuable player for his ability to play anywhere at a decent standard and he's shown in the last two games what he can do at right back. Nelson is raw but it's far too early to give up on him. The only way I see Nelson being let go is if we want to go all-in on Amaechi or Saka and need to make room. Otherwise, I'd be severely disappointed to see the club give up on good players that have come from its own academy.

Arsenal are the closest to finding a deal for teenage Brazilian sensation Gabriel Martinelli. The club has watched the 17 year old forward multiple times. [Globo Esporte]

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
Though I would like to see us sign a reliable alternative to Bellerin at RB, and Monreal is getting older at LB, a fullback isn't a huge priority at the moment. Niles can play either position, Chambers can play RB, Nelson played wingback for us at the start of last season...not definite solutions but I wouldn't break the bank or offload players with big potential to make room for a guy who might not even force his way into the first team like Wan-Bissaka.
For me, we only need to spend big money at CB and on the wings. We have enough talent in other positions where we may lack numbers (fullback, GK, CM) such that cheaper prospect signings may be fine if those two signings eat up most of the budget.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
I'm going to assume that with a name like Martinelli, this kid has an Italian connection that means he can sign without a work permit.
That's the big thing with these non-European talents. If they get a WP and join right away they have a chance. But without one they'll need to go on loan all the time and it never works. See: Carlos Vela, Wellington Silva, Pedro Botelho, Samuel Galindo, Takuma Asano, Kelechi Nwakali...
I'm starting to wonder about us signing a winger. If 3412 is going to be a thing from now on then we'd arguably need another forward before a wide player. We'd be asking too much of Eddie to cover Auba/Laca otherwise.
Personally, I hope the club is looking at a forward who can play wide to replace what Welbeck brings to the squad. I also think Emery will want a industrious attacking midfielder to replace Ramsey, considering how important Ramsey has been in the big games.
So maybe one CB, a Ramsey replacement and a Welbeck replacement will be the bare minimum this summer. If Smith Rowe and Nelson are added to the squad, that'll add to our attacking options.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
change of plan now that Pepe is gone
no alternative with good enough quality, just sign versatile attacker with athleticism who wouldn't necessarily be first XI player, basically Welbeck Replacement
Sarr
Perhaps Harvey Barnes with potential to be first XI Player
quality has to be added in midfield #8/#10 type
Aouar/Maddison

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
Charles Watts of Football London with some transfer stuff:
https://www.football.london/arsenal-fc/transfer-news/what-dream-summer-transfer-window-16015728
- Club's main priorities are left back, winger and a Ramsey replacement.
- Celtic's Kieran Tierney could be our LB target but there are fears he'll be too pricey.
- Club is expected to return for Nkunku in the summer.
- Nicolas Pepe was a big target but they feel he's now out of reach. Ismaila Sarr could be an alternative.
- Mustafi could be shopped around. If he leaves, a CB will be bought (no names mentioned though).
- Elneny and Jenkinson are free to leave, and we won't be taking up the second year option on Lichtsteiner's deal.
- Aaron Wan-Bissaka could be a "surprise" target to ensure we're not short at RB.
- Amaechi and John-Jules will have one year left on their deals next season and will need convincing to stay. There're a lot of clubs interested.
