At least this movie made it look like they really wanted to kill each other than move around and do cartwheels and stuff. More realistic > Looking stupid
Haven't seen the latest film but they were a lot better than the original films lol.
Original's were so embarassingly stiff, it was painful to rewatch those battles recently, overall the films are much better though obviously.
In what way were they better in the prequels? There was no emotion behind the fights at all, they just danced around until someone lost an arm or died.
If you don't like the originals', this is probably not that much for you. They abandoned the dancing.
Wasn't either in the originals tbh, the fights were hardly the best thing about it.
It was the conversations and the struggle between Luke and Vader that made their duel famous.. Especially in episode 5.
Obi-wan and Vader's duel in episode 4 did suck though lmao.

Well, did anyone spoil him? He just write someone said he's in the film. It's a cameo you don't notice at all unless you listen for it. I tried to figure out who he and Pegg was the second time. Also Carrie Fisher's daughter

Re: Star Wars – Official Canon Thread. - RIP Carrie Fisher
I assume this is the thread where i can share my immediate thoughts on The Force Awakens?
- Spoiler:
- I've only just seen it so these are preliminary thoughts and feelings...
I can't say that i really liked it all too much. The people in the theater didn't really clap once it was over so i guess there were plenty of viewers that were also left kind of cold.
First of all, the characters...
I expected much more from the Gwendoline Christie character (if you can even call it that). She barely appeared in the film and i personally don't think the characterization produced a good or memorable character at all. The character was allegorically and actually thrown into the garbage...
I thought the rivalry dynamic between General Hux and Kylo Ren was interesting and i feel it has some kind of positive potential, but it definitely has to be fleshed out more. I feel that by the end all of the main figures in the First Order were made out to seem pretty incompetent. (More on this dissatisfaction with the First Order LATER)
General Hux gave competent hints of being a passionate and idealistic villain but he as well wasn't all too memorable imo. He still could have been bigger and badder; i don't feel like he really outwitted Kylo Ren at any given point and he didn't send chills down my spine or any of the sort.
I thought it was interesting that Kylo Ren was made out to be a readily apparent conflicted character. He confesses his intimate feelings to the spirit of the evil and enigmatic family figure who he idealizes...It's as if he's talking to a mirror, and i felt that scene was well done albeit too little of the Darth Vader influence was shown, mentioned, or developed imo.
I liked Adam Driver's performance, he has an interesting presence that got the job done in terms of characterization and he seemed human to me, arguably already a better tragic character in development than Hayden Christensen's Anakin imo. Again, he was portrayed as inexperienced, confused, clumsy, tortured, divided, insecure, but in his case, because of his role in the film, this all plays out positively.
He got taught a lesson perhaps too easily by Rey at the end though. I liked the first instance where Rey shows her Force potential, but the second one was comme ci comme ca.
I liked Poe Dameron's first instances in the film (not the later ones), i'm not familiar with Oscar Isaac's work but i feel he did a good job at portraying a cool hero pilot when he was given the chance. Another wasted character ala Captain Phasma imo. He is developed little, the audience sees little of him, and the fact that he had to clumsily explain why Finn didn't find him after the desert crash points to an error in character development and script imo. More could have been done to establish the guy as a relevant Star Wars figure.
Out of all the characters maybe i liked Finn the most. He was charismatic, light hearted, perhaps has the most discernible and clear goals and character arc, and his cutesy affection for Rey wasn't too bad. Putting him in a ?coma? at the end seems an ok step. It's interesting that he had "no name" but... i don't think i can totally buy his story of not wanting to form a part of the empire...if he was programmed since he was a child (i believe they mentioned that) you'd expect him to be more engrained with the first order's beliefs.
Daisy Ridley's performance as Rey was good, and i fully support the notion of having a strong female lead, but the character development again was maybe lacking. She is taken into the mission because she has been conveniently "marked" as an accomplice to traitor Finn and conveniently knows how to drive the millennium falcon. Yes she's a gritty scavenger as well demonstrated with the framing and scenes in which she investigates the metaphoric cave/crevice-like ship ruins but meh... I can write more but enough is enough... about the characters.
The story turned out to be the predictable mush that many probably predicted, and i think this is a microcosmic statement that reflects on the fundamental problems with the film. The story arguably lacks the depth, intelligence, and aspirations of a truly great (or even good) film. The good guys win, the bad guys are made out to be severely incompetent, the film is not risky at all (not that i would have even considered it to be risky for the film not to be a spiritual replica of A New Hope) and it has so many logical flaws that take away from the experience and credibility of the film.
I can write much much more but this is it for now, i'll simply point out some negative and positive things to finish...
- After the planets were destroyed by the death star little was subsequently made out of it. I barely felt it was tragic at all. I feel similar feelings with Solo's death which you could feel coming from far away perhaps too easily. I did like the arguably metaphoric bridge scenario in which Ren kills Solo. So so little was made from the fact that billions of lives were suddenly erased..
Characters repeatedly had to spell things out or justify things with quick statements. (e.g. Poe and his disappearance, the old orange character skipping over how she got Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber, Han Solo and the incoming X-wings, Han Solo remarking on Rey's convenient PHD level mastery in engineering solving almost anything that has to do with tinkering with technology.)
I didn't really feel much from Han Solo and Leia reuniting, what's the history between them?
Little was made of Chewbacca's grief for Solo's death (i think the most that was shown was a quick shot of a sad chewbacca after the death star had blown up)
It was far too easy and convenient for Solo to find the falcon (although i believe he explains how this was possible)
When Rey and Finn were running from the tie fighters why were they able to blow up pretty much everything around them but not them?
Was there no blockade waiting for the Falcon after it escaped Jakku? Were two tie fighters the only threat?
Why didn't the star destroyer crew shut the shuttle bay doors when Poe and Finn were trying to escape?
Why did Kylo simply ignore the fact that Solo and Finn were still alive once he captured Rey? This led to the destruction of the entire death star... He gave the plans to the republic by letting BB-8 escape..
There was a lot of cool camera work and set pieces that told the story and ideas visually.
I thought that despite their often poor character development all the actors did a pretty good job and were good choices.
Also, do the main characters really show substantial themes in their character arcs? Didn't Rey simply prevail at the end largely due to magic? Luke couldn't even fight as well as she could after the training with Yoda... By the end of the film does the film and its characters leave behind substantial messages and themes that can be deemed as well done and memorable?

Beautiful. Just beautiful
- Spoiler:
- RIP Han. My heart started beating so fast when he walked down that bridge. Knew it was coming.
The comedy was on point this film. Finn and BB8 scenes ere hilarious. John Boyega's gonna be a huge star.
Decades on and C3PO still has no chill.
Kylo Ren was magnificent.
Not a perfect movie by any means, wish some characters gotta lot more screentime (Poe Dameron especially). I don't know why they hyped up Phasma so much, she was irrelevant and could have been any actor/actress cast as Stormtrooper captain.

Does anyone here really care about Boba Fett? He's basically a non-character that's been popular because he looks cool.
- Spoiler:
- Same way Phasma was marketed. So I don't really expected anything. And I don't want more Phasma. Hope she's dead tbh.

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Crushes Records, Topping Largest Box Office Weekend of All Time
Star Wars: The Force Awakens stormed the box office and walked away with an estimated $238 million in its first three days domestically (including $57 million in Thursday night "previews") along with another $279 million internationally for a massive $517 million worldwide opening. Suffice to say, this shatters the domestic box office opening weekend record of $208.8 million set by Jurassic World earlier this year, but the record-breaking doesn't end there. In just its first day of release Force Awakens brought in an estimated $120.5 million setting a new record for the largest Friday, opening day and single day. All on its own, that opening day was also enough to break the previous December opening weekend record of $84.62 million set by The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 2012. Additionally, the film now holds the following domestic records: Largest Thursday Previews: $57 million*
Previous Record: $43.5 million (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2) Largest Friday, Opening Day, Single Day: »

Re: Star Wars – Official Canon Thread. - RIP Carrie Fisher
It can still have biggest ever worldwide opening after exact numbers are out. It's almost caught Jurassic World, without opening in China, which JW did. Insane moneymaking for blockbusters this year. 5 billion dollar movies. Minions, Furious 7, Avengers, SW and JW
