On Sunday, Gerard Piqué renewed his contract with FC Barcelona through to June 30, 2019 after the two parties reached an agreement last week. The player and his agent put pen to paper at the Club offices, where they were joined by president Josep Maria Bartomeu, vice president for sport Jordi Mestre and director of sport, Andoni Zubizarreta.

“I’m closer to retiring here”

If he sees out the agreement, the Catalan will have spent 11 of his 32 years at FCB. “Knowing that I could live out my career here is a big boost for me” he said. “I hope we can enjoy as many successes as we have had already.”

Bartomeu added that “it is very important to consolidate Gerard Piqué at Barcelona. He’s the best centre back in the world … He is a core part of the new project here at FC Barcelona”. Meanwhile, Zubizarreta commented that “renewing Piqué, our main centre back, confirms the mutual confidence of the player and the Club in the continuation and improvement of our project".

Excited about Luis Enrique

Piqué also spoke about new manager Luis Enrique, saying that “I am very excited. In his press conference he showed that he’s very clear about his ideas. He knows this place well and I think he’ll do a lot of good for us … I am really looking forward to working under him.”

He concluded by saying that “FC Barcelona has to be at the top, winning titles and feeling important among the elite of European and world football. We have a team, and a coach. We have all the ingredients to get back where we belong”.

5 year contract extension

the guy will keep on saying BIG thing 5 more years in the media even when he will not be performing on the pitch......  

Selling Pique would be the dumbest thing we could possibly do right at this moment, what's the problem?

And who asked to sell him   

then why is it a problem that we extended his contract 5 years? i don't see why the facepalms etc.
if anything in the longrun that saves us money from spending stupid wages.

for example iniesta, for years we had him on below average wages because of long extensions and only recently did he get a huge pay rise.

I don't think that's correct, at least since 2009 he has been one of the five best paid players in the team.

And you see nothing wrong with rewarding one of our laziest players with a 5 year extension? I would rather he get a 3 or 4 year extension, 5 is only for the likes of Messi.

again i see nothing wrong with extending our only real centerback let alone the only one in the club who has any aerial ability (what little he has)
and i wouldn't say he is lazy, i blame D. Alves more or less for not covering the wings along with jordi alba which constantly leaves our centerbacks with so much pressure and all the blame.

I was referring to your Iniesta example

Please stop blaming fullbacks for Pique's gaffs. He has had a overall decent season and as always played well in the bigger games, I also dont have a problem with extending him, but his gaffs are his own...its not Dani Alves or Alba's fault he cant handle players in isolation situations anymore.

So pique not running fast is also Alves/Alba problem......
In the near future, i dont see us playing Fb with better skill in defending than attacking......That gives you few more years of extension of blaiming fb for his fault....

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique believes that his contribution to the team is often undervalued after a difficult start to the season.

The Spain international started Saturday's match against Athletic Bilbao on the bench and was recently left out of the Spain squad, having been a mainstay in Vicente del Bosque's first team in recent years.

However, he believes that he deserves more credit for how he has developed during his time at Camp Nou after having his performances roundly criticised.

"I feel that, for a while, I have not been valued for what I have done sportingly," he told reporters.

"I have been learning more and more every year. The years remaining in my career will be the same. I say that calmly because I work hard every year.

"I always try to do the best I possibly can. I am happy with the level I have shown in the minutes I have played. I can't do anything about public opinion."

Pique also insisted that his team-mates can always rely on Lionel Messi and Neymar, who combined to see off Athletic on Saturday late on, the Argentine setting up the Brazilian for both goals in a 2-0 win.

"Messi and Neymar are as good as ever. This season, they both have a lot of quality and when they connect it's amazing," he added.

"They are two of the best in the world and they play together."

Barcelona have collected nine points from their opening three games in La Liga and already hold a six-point advantage over arch-rivals Real Madrid. Nevertheless, Pique has insisted that Madrid cannot be written off just yet.

"We have started with nine points in the league but that doesn't mean the league will be easy or a done deal.

"It'll be a tough competition until the very end so I don't think Madrid will be far behind us."

The centre-back also had his say on Barcelona's Champions League ambitions and insisted that people cannot expect the Catalans to win the competition each season.

"If we had to win the Champions League every couple of seasons, that would be a very tough task.

"We have a very good generation which we have to make the most of. We have won lots of titles and we expect to win a lot more but that doesn't mean we think we can win the Champions League all the time."

but this year is different he has a system that works in favor for him and a real centerback partner so if he continues to fails then he deserves all the criticism going his way.

Well obviously all the comments here are contingent on that the reported news are actually true. It also sounds like he might have been drunk, or I would hope to believe.

No doubt agree. He would have been part of the captains if he was worthy already.

You have to follow your captain, he has to be an example and he has to have knowledge and demand from his teammates the extra and they have to know he would only demand what he himself would do.

Pique obviously doesnt fit that.

Well, he apologized on Twitter. Said that his words were exaggerated but yeah ... basically admitted that he said something.
