Re: The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
That wouldn't be the first time Wenger has said he's working on strengthening a position and nearly every time he doesn't actually do what he said he wants to do, for whatever reason. So I'd take what Wenger has said about looking at defenders with a pinch of salt.
Analysing his quotes though:
“I can promise we work very hard on it. In fairness, everybody looks for players. Everybody looks for the same area and you see that nobody turns up with magic. It’s all about being steady, working very hard on it and being calm as well."
Code for "we're waiting for Bolton to get desperate so we can get Gary Cahill cheaper", perhaps?
They're "working hard" to lower Cahill's price and they're being "calm" about it because they know that Bolton may eventually be desperate to sell, given Cahill's contract situation and Bolton's financial situation.
Eh, that's just a conspiracy theory, though.
He's just saying that he's aware that he needs to buy a defender but won't panic buy. If he can't buy a defender he'll probably fall back on Bartley, since we've not let him go on loan despite Rangers being more than happy to take him.

Arsenalfaithfull wrote:That is probably it right there^^^ seeing as his value post august will depreciate to the core, and Bolton will be faced with having to to take 10 mill or nothing. The only downside i can see to this is if old man Rednapp bids like 14 mill right after we put in 10. Either way i always forget that Arsene has been doing this for nearly a decade , and still is seen as a top dog in teh transfer market.
I also want to see Cahill come in because the style football that Bolton play under Coyle is imo the closest thing to arsenal in the PL. Looking at the youtube clips (and i know that isnt saying much) Cahill is actually quite comfortable on the ball, but unlike our current defenders, doesn't hesitate to clear the ball when defending in the box (vs dribbling it away from danger)
I am starting to like the possibility of Cahill joining us.... for a cut price that is.
Exactly mate, he's not the tallest but his aerial ability is excellent and unlike some of our defenders it seems he just hoofs the ball out of the box when there is danger which I think we sometimes don't do enough. If we don't do that then the ball might go out for a corner, and you know what happens next...
Redknapp is a person to be wary of, of course, especially on deadline day as well because Spuds are always after someone but I don't think he'll go for Cahill, probably Samba or someone.
He'll come for less than 17m for definite as well, Bolton need money + last year of contract so could go on a free and receive nada = 10m or less for Cahill. Although only downside is Bartley probably will leave unless he goes on loan to Rangers again and I'm a big fan of the boy, he's a leader as well and I hope he gets a chance soon because he deserves it.

Wenger says that with new additions Ryo Miyaichi and Gervinho in the squad now "players like arshavin and walcott" will be wary of competition.

Hope that Arshavin will raise his game, he could do with some competition. Although his spot last season was under threat from Walcott yet his performances didn't change?

I think arshavin did quite well last year considering that he was played out of position. for the amount of time he got, he rewarded us with quite a lot. He just gets slack for not busting out his lungs.... but the man is one of the most effective players in the league. Dont let his workrate fool ya.

Re: The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
Arshavin is just one of those players you're never going to get consistent performances out of. I recall his old manager saying how Arshavin would only give you 20 minutes of brilliance, not 90. I'm pretty much at the point now where I don't expect anything else from him.
It's difficult to argue with his production, though. 10 goals, 17 assists and apparently this is without him being at his best.

Arshavin will also be an amazing coach for players like Wilshere and Ramsey. And what i like about him is that he doesn't complain being benched. I think in one of his interview he ever admitted to wilshere being more skilled than him. Either way , i am expecting him to "ease the load" for Jack and Aaron to gradually come into their own

Re: The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
People were commenting that Arshavin looks a lot thinner in pre-season to which I agree because last year he looked a bit chubby. 10 goals and 17 assists pretty much justifies him staying here because he can be a key player and hopefully this season he will return to his Jan 10'-Jun 10' form.

Re: The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
SAMIR NASRI is happy to sit out his Arsenal contract and quit for nothing next summer.
The French midfielder has told Gunners team-mates he definitely will NOT sign a new deal at the club.
He will snub the £115,000-a-week contract being offered by Arsenal in the hope of forcing a £20million move to Manchester City.
Nasri, who travelled to Germany yesterday for a friendly against Cologne this afternoon, has told club pals he would still be happy to stay at the Emirates for the final year of his contract.
Asked last night whether Nasri's future at Arsenal is sorted, boss Arsene Wenger said: "Not completely but I want him to stay. He knows that.
"Hopefully we can sort that out in the coming weeks."
During Arsenal's recent tour of the Far East, Wenger said he was hopeful both Nasri and Cesc Fabregas would stay.
Nasri was then offered the massive £115,000-a-week deal but has been quick to turn it down.
If the Frenchman sits tight and sees out his current contract, then Fabregas is likely to finally move to Barcelona.
However, if Nasri's ultimatum to Arsenal forces through the move to City, Fabregas may have to spend another year at the Emirates.

Before we all criticise Nasri, let's reminds ourselves that this is the Sun, quite possibly the worse tabloid going.
How would the Sun know what Nasri is saying to his team mates? Clearly it's something that's been heard on the grape-vine and thus is completely unreliable and most likely not even true.
Nothing but wild speculation created to rile Arsenal fans up.

I love it during this time of the year. Mainly because we are always trashed by the media. 3 games into the season, we are hailed as the best thing since sliced bread.

Re: The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
“The position at the moment [with Fabregas] is a ‘no comment’ situation because there is no movement at all,” Wenger told Arsenal.com.
Samir Nasri has also been linked with a move away from Emirates Stadium and Wenger hopes to sort out the Frenchman’s future soon.
Two players that Wenger has admitted could be leaving the Club this summer are Manuel Almunia and Nicklas Bendtner. Neither have travelled to Germany for the Club’s pre-season training camp.
“[It is] not completely [sorted that Samir will stay] but I want him to stay. He knows that. Hopefully we can sort that out in the coming weeks.”
“Alumina has been contacted by a few clubs, Bendtner as well,” he added.
“As long as the situation is not settled, we have to focus on the coming season with the players we have. The players who are uncertain, it is difficult for them to focus on being completely committed.”

I thought it was sorted out that he was staying . Well, hopefully this is settled soon - his performance today was not great and maybe it had something to do with this speculation.Spider wrote:“[It is] not completely [sorted that Samir will stay] but I want him to stay. Man Jose enrique as our LB would be soo amazing. The guy can pass, has credible speed, and is strong as a bull. But its going to be really tough to steal him away from liverpool ...what with the carroll, and spanish connection.

yeah we definitely only had 3 in the back line.
it's one thing if you're a LWB, but if you dont defend AT ALL then whats the point of him even being out there? its not even like he's that great going forward.
and about Nasri.... should he start over walcott or gervinho?
