One Night in Miami - 8/10

It was a good watch. Strong performances from all 4 leads, particularly from Kingsley Ben-Adir and Leslie Odom Jr. So much commentary from this is as relevant today as it was then. What I liked most about this movie is that it captures how much things have changed and how much things have not changed at all. It will be in the awards hunt for sure.

Outside the Wire - 6/10

Very similar to Chappie, which I rate a bit higher, but a fun action movie in general with a cautious message about the future of military warfare. Anthony Mackie might want to steer clear of these types of movies for a while though or he might end up getting typecasts as cyborgs. I enjoyed his performance overall though. Damson Idris was good, but far better in Snowfall than this.

Watched The Fog

There is something about Carpenter films that makes the characters really irrelevant (unless it's Kurt Russell) despite how important they are tried to be shown. The atmosphere always always makes everything else inferior. Even the plot itself lol.

Amazing director. Shame how underrated some of his films are.

Good Time from the same director was a lot better imo.

Did you just say "average suspense"?

Well according to Charisma Carpenter, he's been a piece of shit for 20+ years now. I'm making my way through Angel and have gotten to the Cordy/Connor plot line and it's so clearly seen in Carpenter's performance, what she referred to in her tweets about him. I'll post them in the TV thread.

Ray Fisher was right on the money about him.

Really enjoyed Judas and the black messiah. Kaluuya and Stanfield are just fantastic in everything they do.

I'd be surprised if it ends up being my film of the year, bit it's a good film that will do well at the Oscars

Uncle Frank

Acting clinic put on by Paul Bettany. Great stuff from Sophia Lillis and Peter Macdissi as well. This made me really want to re-watch Six Feet Under. Alan Ball's relationships with death are truly fascinating. A great watch.

Judas and the Black Messiah

Haunting, taut and paced really well by Shaka King. Powerful performances from Daniel Kaluuya, LaKeith Stanfield and Dominique Fishback. Dovetails very nicely with the Trial of the Chicago 7, which takes place just after Fred Hampton's assassination. I don't think I've been this impressed by a truly black historical film since Spike Lee's Malcolm X. One Night in Miami will be the media and awards show darling (and deservedly so), but this film....this is the real gem for me.

I feel like Tom Hardy has a lot of Nic Cage energy.

Also Eddie Redmayne in Jupiter Ascending is the one role made for Cage that he never did

i haven't seen a bunch of those films, but from what i've seen Trial of Chicago 7 is by far the best. Found Minari and Nomadland to be very average and bland.

as always i'll post my Letterboxd list of my top picks of 2020 before Oscar night, which is late April this year... gives me a chance to catch up on a few more 2020 films

Coming 2 America

A sequel to a movie that didn't need a sequel. It did nothing to really change my mind about that. It's an entertaining watch when watching it with family (especially those old enough to know the original well) and that's how I watched this. Lots of great call-backs to the original, but plot wise.....it was miles away from the originality of the original.
