My review of The Last Jedi.
TLDR: allegorically it is this
But do read on.
TLDR: allegorically it is this
But do read on.
- Spoiler:
- I come from a similar perspective to the guys at Red Letter Media, which i recommend watching. Based on the contexts which give birth to these films, from an artistic and storytelling perspective you have to accept that they are in various ways constrained by their "mass consumption mainstream product" nature, having said that. I liked the film and thought it was an improvement over the force awakens, which disgusted me. The best film apart from the original trilogy.
Spoilers: For starters, I really liked the twists and turns the movie had, it caught me unexpected time and again, and albeit the film is full of logically flimsy plot points as a result of trying to do this, i look over this in part because of what i stated in the previous paragraph. Snoke getting disposed of the way he did was unexpected and refreshing, the way the film plays with the audience's expectations again and again concerning Kylo, Rey, and Luke, and Leia, and Laura Dern's character, and Finn, etc was very much welcomed. I liked that we were baited across episode 7 and 8 with stuff like Snoke's identity, Rey's Parents, Kylo's true allegiance, Rey's possible turn to the dark side, Luke's role in Kylo's turn and in the saga; a lot of what was established in the force awakens paid off here in unexpected and arguably uncompromising fashion. The film managed to do this while providing good enough thematic and plot direction.
There's also plenty of comedic moments and action sequences that do the trick, very nice visuals, especially the part where the millennium falcon goes into the red caves. Also liked the way the film used Allusion in a refreshing manner. For example, the whole Snoke, Rey, and Kylo sequence feels like satirical parody, it calls back to previous events in the saga in a much more interesting way than Lucas' prosaic bullshit for example. Snoke is dealt with and made to look like an a jackass and the most famous scene in Star Wars history is referenced and turned up side down. This is how Allusion is done folks. I also appreciated the lack of lightsaber use in the film and it's conscious focus rather, on what the force means, and i liked that the film touched on the paradoxes and dilemmas of labeling good and evil. Albeit this was all done in a very surface level. I also thought Mark Hamill stole the show, his performances reminded me of how Hamill acts in real life. There's plenty of good stuff here.
There's too much to unpack, for now i'll end this here by adding that one of the biggest gripes i have with these new films nonetheless is that they feel pretty artificial from a "soul" perspective, and this is again very much down to what i mentioned in the first paragraph. This feels like a plastic exercise, all the characters of the past, ostracized and replaced by nobodies in the foreground, manufactured for a new generation of consumers. This informs just about everything in the films, for example, it is why the Luke story arc is vapid and haphazard. Laura Dern's character arc is a perfect microcosm of this as well.
Point is these films feel like that house Flanders was built when his first got destroyed, outside it looks plenty of good.... but inside...
Anyways, i nonetheless enjoyed myself, satisfied my taste buds, good enough Burger, oh wait wrong review.
I give it an 8 out of 10, albeit with a different mindset it's much lower.

Also. Even if it was a remake, that doesn’t mean the first one is per definition better.

I can’t watch Red Letter Media at all. They’re awful to watch really.
They’re so god damn obnoxious towards films. They’re so afraid to show honest emotions towards anything and they love to ridicule anyone who does. They’re just trying so hard to be hip.
Worst part of it is that so many insecure weaklings on the internet parrots their shit and can’t form an opinion of their own if their life depended on it. (Not saying you’re like them at all, just really don’t like them).

Understandable.
They're quite good-hearted and self-aware sardonic critics with a counter culture edge, and it might be easy to mistake them for plain assholes if you're not very familiar with them.

- Spoiler:
- First half was weird, did not really like it. Loved the second half.
Kylo killing Snoke and his tag team with Rey was incredible, probably my favorite moment of the entire series. Kylo's character arc is incredible. I love how they legit subverted expectations. Luke's master troll at the end was hilarious.
Casino part was terribly executed. Film suffered from pacing issues.

Better than TFA, but not better than Rogue One.
Hit some really poignant notes throughout, but just seemed uneven in places (like the casino planet).
I really liked Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro's characters. Finn's entire arc felt forced, but Luke/Rey/Kylo arc was great.
A good Star Wars movie, but not a great one.

Why is everyone suddenly such big fans of Rogue One? Seems to be a general trend I’ve been seeing. Don’t remember much praise before TLJ came out. A lot of people used to hate on it and crave for an alternate cut that had the moments in the trailers.
When it first came out it seemed like everyone agreed it was middling until an absolutely incredible third act.
Was never huge on the characters in Rogue One except K2SO.

If you go back to Rogue 1's release, im sure you can find many praising it, including me.
I'm surprised you aren't big on the characters, i don't think i've been invested in as large a cast in SW movie before. I liked everyone, the variety of them helped. Meanwhile, this movie could've been fine without Finn lol, no idea what purpose he served other than
Dont even get me started on Rey being a Mary Sue, and dont you dare recycle that hot garbage from twitter. I am only calling out what i am seeing. The only characters that i feel like im invested in are Kylo and Poe.
Rogue One is not perfect, but it is much better than TFA and TLJ, at least for me. It even has your boy Mads ffs.

Rey can’t be called a Mary Sue after TLJ though. But I don’t really want to have the Kylo battle discussion again.
Mads Mikkelsen had a too small part in that movie. Wish he’d had more to do.
Diego Luna is great but him just killing people and having no moral seemed out of time at some point for me. Felicity Jones I don’t understand the fascination with in general.
The two munks and K2SO were great, but hard to say much about them. Rid Ahmed’s character was also lacking. Didn’t like the two main characters.

Don't think it will. Too long. Fewer screenings playing than TFA.
Beginning to doubt Avatar's record will ever be broken.

@freeza Diego lunas character just showing up and killing people from the start was exactly what got me hooked in rogue 1. In the star wars movies I've had a hard time buying the whole resistance thing.
Rogue 1 was the first one that really felt like a real war. Tons of great characters that felt like real members of a resistance pushed to the extremes where they had to do *bleep* up things. I won't go into spoilers but the whole main cast mission and the climax was fantastic. Top star wars movie for me, I actually bought into the overall conflict outside of the jedis and siths.

Didn't mind the killing itself. Just felt they could've gone a much more sinister route with that character, but he kind of just changed. And mainly didn't connect that much with the two mains.
K2SO dying absolutely ruined me though. One of the greatest Star Wars characters.
I liked that it felt like a war, but felt like the movie lacked until the third act mainly because of characters. The opening and 3rd act were amazing though.
The Last Jedi felt like a war also imo. Both of these two had the greatest battles in the series.

The last battle scene in rogue one where you go through all the main group on that planet is GOAT. I need to watch that movie again, only saw it once

- Spoiler:
- With how Snoke was killed off, anyone else think Rian Johnson's trilogy will center around him?
Also wow, I was convinced Rey is Luke's daughter. This film just ROFLstomped the two biggest questions everyone had after TFA, who is Snoke and who are Rey's parents.

- Spoiler:
- It was supposed to be like that. I read somewhere that Rey was to told by J.J. to act like her father was someone very important and legendary character.
Felt that was an incredible choice to make overall. Finally brough some "anyone from anywhere can be a hero" thing that the first movie had. And not everyone had connected. Rey is such an emotional character for me because I've had a lot similar experiences, so this whole scene really moved me.
Regarding Rian Johnson's trilogy they won't do Snoke. Already stated they won't use previous characters from the new canon.
Everyone is hoping for an Old Republic basically. I want that. Considering how much he explored and added to the force mythos in this one, I expect him to do some trilogy about the old republic.
The first KOTOR game was very much about Revan and Malak who wanted to explore the secrets of the force. That would be incredible to explore in a movie.

What a gem from a Rogue One review in the old thread
" There’s none of the Shakespearean space politics, enticingly florid dialogue, or experiential thrills of the best of George Lucas’s “Star Wars” entries (“Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith”). "

Re: Star Wars – Official Canon Thread. - RIP Carrie Fisher
Tbh i like Rogue One and it has highs which a lot of Star Wars films don't have but i do agree with Freeza tbh.
A shit tonne of people complained about at the characters upon release and it's pacing.
I didn't personally and i mainly find the pacing argument silly when A New Hope ( AKA lets have a robot speak to itself for half an hour the movie) is universally loved but it did happen.
Which does give off the feeling of a changed narrative.
