Re: The Movie House - Part 9
Nocturnal Animals check
k so I watched it and I think I got it. (lol Which is rather surprising cos I normally have to look up when I watch a movie of this ilk. I may look up eventually as there are still parts which I am in dark. )
Anyway the bottomline is I liked it. dat cast tho. Was literally fangirling in admiration each and every time 2 of my most fav actors JG and Shannon came together on screen. Such wealth of talent. And Amy Adams was an added bonus.
Know its based on a book and I want to read that book cos I am not exactly sure whether the director has managed to show full justice to the source material. Tom Ford, anyone? Can someone who have both read the book and seen the movie shed light? Have a nagging feeling if it was made by a Denis Vilenueve or a Jonathan Glazer or the guy who made Nightcrawler the end result could have been much much better. But of course I could be wrong.
Anyway, 8/10. Could have been better but still I am satisfied. Once again that cast.. fking drove me nuts.

Re: The Movie House - Part 9
Moonlight (2016) check.
Finally watched it. And well, its a complicated film to actually form an opinion on I felt. Dont know whether I got it entirely or not. It was indeed a brilliantly made film.
There were a lot of stuff going on which they didnt even show on screen, like in the story. Instead they focused their entire attention on this boy and what he was going through which I rather liked tbh. Know the director has a drawn a lot from foreign cinema and its showing in the way he has told the story with more visuals and music rather than through spoken dialogues. Almost felt like watching a foreign language film tbh.
I need to watch the movie again or at least wait a little to let it sink in. Right now I feel the film went a bit shallow in the middle portion after a truly bright start and then rallied itself to culminate in a beautiful manner.
And to them accusations being filed at the movie calling it an Oscar bait and shit, well I disagree.

Went to watch Moonlight today and it was cancelled as I was standing in line. Got a refund and two free tickets but couldn't care less. Just wanted to watch the film.

I loved it, I was locked in throughout.
It's just Hardy talking on a phone for 90 minutes though. So beware of that.

Went to see Moonlight, I can see where Glory is coming from. Also felt I needed to absorb the film afterwards. I think I still may need to in the next coming days before I make my 2016 list.
It is a very good film though. Mahershala Ali was banderas.gif

Re: The Movie House - Part 9
So who here has seen Toni Erdmann?
I don't get the hype to be honest.
When it comes to the "critically acclaimed" foreign films I have begun to notice that it is either hit or miss to me. These films tend to drag on, and tend to have long takes as well, so if the story really doesn't engage me it can quickly turn into a torment for me.
Freeza might be able to answer me on this, so why do most foreign filmmakers insist with these long takes, or taking a long time to get the action of the story going?

It's a myth. I don't really think there's much of a difference. It's just a preference of the academy voters I think. It's also hard to get a clear picture of foreign films when only such a small part of them get attention and viewership.
It seems that it's only the films you talk about that get recognition outside of respective countries, maybe because it's the movies that stand out the most compared to American movies.
Danish cinema in general is mostly war movies and bad comedies. Less than 1% is like The Hunt quality.

Re: The Movie House - Part 9
Opinions on A24 in general? We've had people mention Locke here, Moonlight in general earlier and I can recall EG hyping American Honey earlier this year. The Lobster and Room I both found highly enjoyable.
1) who are these people?
2) they're really new I assume?
3) They're killing it for the most part.

From what I know they're an independent entertainment company that formed 5 or so years ago. They specialise in film production it seems.
Beyond that I don't know much, but yea, they keep on producing these indie gems. Which is great. I love them.

They're an entertainment company that mainly distributes movies.
They're amazing at negotiating disbution rights and judging quality of movies, which is what they're mainly known for. They're buying up independant movies from all sorts of festivals and marketing them for further releases. They're basically the best mid-budget-like distribution company out there.
I think there's some misconception about their producing though. They didn't make most of the movies they get credit for. But instead they bought the rights and released them. They're are buying the movies to fit their profile though, so they have that profile at least, which should be admired.
But they didn't make Locke, The Lobster, Room or American Honey.
Moonlight is basically their big first hit from Producing from what I can tell. But they're definitely great at judging quality and getting smaller movies shown in America.

Re: The Movie House - Part 9
Holy shit John Wick 2 is something else. Has the best action you will ever see. You finally get to see the pencil trick and it does not *bleep* disappoint. Keanu Reeves was born for this role, the ending sets up the third film and I cannot wait for it. If its half as good as this one, its gonna be insane.

Ah, thanks again for the more info Freeza. Don't know if I talked about it earlier, but A24 was involved in 20th Century Women (whether producing or buying distributing rights) and that film is probably going to make it into my top 5 Best of 2016 list.

Its ok. Try to ignore Tom Hardy's "Welsh" accent. It sounds more like Bangladeshi-British.

American Beauty is not good in any way. No way how it won best picture
American Pies though. They're great. Won't hear anything else.
American Psycho also.
American Hustle, Beauty and Sniper are the unofficial "never gonna watch that overrated shit again trilogy"
