Re: NFL Thread
Defense is incredibly tactical. It requires reading the game situation (downs and distance, score, and time left) to call appropriate plays by the coordinator, and then each player on the defense needs to be able to read the offensive set up and make quick judgments (run vs. pass, which direction the play will go, movement of blockers, etc.) on the basis of game film and the arrangement of the offense before the snap. After the snap, each player needs to fulfill their assignment, which could differ based on zone vs. man coverage systems, different rush systems and blitz packages, etc.
That's why you don't get a good idea of NFL defense from Madden... it's very team oriented, and any individual blowing coverage can result in a broken play; when you can only control one of the defenders, you don't get a very good picture of how playing defense works.

Oh, got it... American Football is just a little too slow paced for me, too many breaks in action

Re: NFL Thread
Yeah you read the down and yardage. Like 3rd and long is almost always a pass play, so a man blitz or just zone coverage is common. But say a team lines up in like a 3-4 cover 1(3 lineman, 4 LBs, only 1 safety playing zone) and the other team comes out with 3/4 WR's, you just audible and change the formation. This is why disguising your defense is so important in the NFL. Make it obvious what you're doing, you'll get killed.

Watching college football and this freshman QB for Florida State Jameis Winston looks like the real deal. He went 25/27 358 yards 4 TDs.
People are comparing him to Charlie Ward already because of the FSU and 2 sport connection. He's not the runner Ward was but might be a better passer.Kevin Durant

You mean that guy that couldn't even beat out Terrelle Pryor for the Raiders starting job
That was in week 17 and both the Lions and Packers fate was decided, ie preseason basically. Threw a pick as well.
Throwing 7 TDs against the Ravens D >>>
Ravens had never given up that many points before.
edit: real glad I sat Baltimores D on fantasy and started Indy against Oakland.

He's a beast.
I'm watching Jets Bucs and Geno Smith has looked alright. Made a couple bad throws but he also just had a 5/5 TD drive. The potential is there.
Hopefully the Sanchez era is over now.
edit: Packers-49ers afterward

Re: NFL Thread
Geno Smith 1-0
led two drives late in the 4th quarter to give us the lead. After the first our defense gave up the lead, then a GW drive after a dumb penalty on TB.
Patriots won a last second FG also. Jets-Patriots on Thursday. If we don't get destroyed it will be a win.

Re: NFL Thread
Jets got robbed. Defense holds the Pats to 13 points, but two game changing calls went against us. The Gates TD where you could never actually see the ball hit the ground, while it may have been incomplete the evidence wasn't there to overturn. And then the blatant Edelman fumble that was called an incompletion even though he took 2 steps and brought the ball to his chest. SMH now I know how the Raiders felt in 01.

I feel your pain (or you feel mine) - I was a huge Raiders fan during those times and that game hurt big time.
How do you feel about Geno Smith? My boy was knocking him a bit, however I don't really rate his NFL knowledge.

I think he's done reasonably well so far. If he had receivers that could catch he would've looked a lot better last night. Gates, Hill, let him down big time. Holmes was the only one catching the ball consistently. One thing I noticed like 3 passes into the TB game is that he's infinitely more accurate than Sanchez. For 3 quarters he didn't turn the ball over. And I didn't see 1 of the interceptions but the 2 I saw. One was a deflection that should've been caught I believe. The other was on their last drive with him trying to force it.
I thought the playcalling sucked though. Our running game is working(unlike last week), so why have your rookie QB throw the ball 35 times on the road. Ivory 12 carries, 52 yards... why not give him more carries...
Stephen Hill is a great physical talent(like Randy Moss type size/speed 4'3 40 at 6'4), but until he starts fighting for the ball and catching it consistently he won't move forward. Look at Fitz, anytime a ball is in his vicinity he's going to outjump the defender to the ball. Good receivers attack the ball...
TLDR: I think Geno's already shown to be more accurate and more poised than Sanchez. Better arm, can actually move outside the pocket. He doesn't get rattled(maybe to a fault?). For 3 quarters he didn't turn the ball over and he did throw for 200+ yards again. 450 yards is like 4 games for Sanchez.

Re: NFL Thread
OK this may be ignorance speaking (isn't it always when I discuss the NFL?), but how does a game with a bazillion (actual term for the amount) refs, challenges, and video replay manage to have f*ck ups like we do in actual football?
I don't mean that to piss on the NFL or anything, I'm just curious. Are the rules just really that specific or is it just hard to get it right sometimes even with video replays?

Re: NFL Thread
Great question honestly.
Part of it(maybe a lot of it) has to do all the different intricacies in American football. In normal football, there's not as many plays during a match that come into question. Goal line obviously, offsides, and a few others.
In the NFL, there's yardage reviews like first downs, fumble or not, catch or incomplete, in bounds or not, whether the ball crossed the goal line, etc
To answer your last question
For the most part they are pretty good with calls on the field. But the challenge/review process is a little weird. It favors the original call on the field. Like if there was a pass ruled complete originally but it seems obvious the player had the ball hit the ground. Unless they can actually see it hit the ground on one of the cameras, they will confirm the original call. Or if it's too close to tell on a goal line play or something, they stick with the original call.

Packers - Bengals game was terrible.
Two teams taking turns trying to throw the game. People are going to be so mad at school tomorrow
Jordy Nelson though...when was the last time he dropped a pass?

I didn't see the game but idk what's up with Green Bay. Turned the ball over 4 times and Rodgers had an off game. Jermichael Finley was hurt too.
I have Rodgers on my fantasy team so I want to see him/them do well.

Re: NFL Thread
Why do QB's get credit for yards after a catch? Doesn't make sense at all.. If you throw it 10 yards but the WR breaks through and goes for another 80, you should only get 10 yards passing

Re: NFL Thread
dmize wrote:And the Colts aren't keeping the training wheels on him like RG3, he's throwing 50 times a game and still winning. 20% of RG3's passes are behind the line of scrimmage(most in the league), they essentially run a gimmick offense that will be found out sooner or later(they line up in a NFL modified option 75% of the time). All his throws are basic 1 read throws, where if it's not there he checks down or takes off. Granted, that's mostly on coaching, and it's been a good formula so far. Some may disagree, but I think he's a great football player, not yet a great QB/passer.
The read option has been adjusted to by NFL defenses, it just took a while. Redskins 0-3, Kaepernick looked horrible today.
RG3 is going to be very good regardless but the Redskins need a new formula.
