It's unfortunate about Lansbury. I guess Wenger doesn't rate as highly as we do.

Re: The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
I hope any move for Lansbury breaks down and he comes back with a vengence to boss into the first team.
Unfortunately though, the rational side of me expected this. Where do you play Lansbury in our team? 3 defenders, DM/CM/AM. And he is not any one of those three. He is a bit of all. Especially if the AM we add is a young chap (Martin or Godze), then there is little or no room for him left!! And then there are the holy trinity of Aneke, Ozhyakup and Ebicilio after this. For furthering his claims to NT, he has to move. And that is an inconvenient truth.

That just speaks levels about Mertesacker's positioning.GoonerJay29 wrote:By the way, just got this from twitter:

I hope Lansbury is loaned. We can't kill off all our English talent.

Lille tell me Cole's loan move from Liverpool has no impact on future of Hazard. They've had no offers, insist he's going nowhere #afc #lfc

Santos and Mertesacker announcements are imminent.
Wenger is in France, reports he is trying to tie up deals for M'Vila and Marvin Martin.

If that's true, I'd take back my Wenger dissapointment and concentrate it all on the board.Samuelj29060 wrote:Santos and Mertesacker announcements are imminent.

Or maybe the board grew some balls?

Re: The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
He said 1 striker, 1 defender and 1 midfielder.
He has got the striker.
He has got a CB. Sold Traore to get in one more LB.
So its still effectively 2 and we are in the market for a midfielder. I'd rather, a playmaker than M'Vila.

I'm told that Per Mertesacker has passed his medical. Final details on the contract being sorted now.
Also a lot of suggestions of Almunia and/or Squillacci being sent to SKorea instead to serve Chu's term in the army on his behalf.

Re: The 2011 Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
Interestingly, Samir Nasri just claimed that the transfer policy at arsenal is not Wenger's fault, instead he pointed the finger to the club's politics (referring to the board?). He said that arsenal don't have much funds compared to others and that they are forced to sell their big players and then bet on young players.
This, if true, explains a whole lot to me. I never understood our transfer policy in the transfer market when the whole world could see it was failing to bring the desired success on the field. I always felt something was weird, perhaps, his hands are tied afterall.
I also just read that some fans are planning to protest when the Swansea game comes around due to Kroenke's silence and lack of financial support. In my opinion, protest will not change much because the transfer market is already closed by then.
Perhaps, the best thing to do is just hope our season kicks off proper against Swansea and that the new players to be brought in strengthen the squad a bit.

The new Roberto Carlos? What can Arsenal fans expect from Andre Santos

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is finally showing his hand in the transfer window following the departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri and the 8-2 thrashing at the hands of Manchester United on Sunday.
First in was Korean striker Park Chu-Young , adding to the Gunners options in attack, and it now appears that Wenger is making a move for international defenders Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos. And while the German's will be a familiar name to most football fans in Britain, left-back Andre Santos' might not be - despite his 22 caps for his national side.
Straight out of the Brazilian school of full-backs, attacking is Andre Santos' primary trade. His left foot is capable of unleashing powerful shots on goal, as well as whipped crosses into the box that the likes of Robin Van Persie and Park Chu-Young will no doubt be anticipating with glee.
Santos made his name in Brazil at Figueirense but a 2008 move to Corinthians really propelled him to the big time. In just a year and half at the Sao Paulo outfit under current Brazil manager Mano Menezes, the full-back would won the Serie B Championship, the Brazilian Cup and the Sao Paulo State Championship.
A move to Europe saw Santos joining the Brazilian contingent at Turkish giants Fenerbahce - one of whom was a certain Roberto Carlos. The Brazilian legend eventually lost his place in the team to the dynamic new arrival and returned to Brazil.
The significance would not have been lost on any Brazilian fan. Carlos' shadow has hung over every Brazilian left-back since his retirement. And given Santos attacking style, as well as his strong, powerful build, the comparisons were even more inevitable.
And while there's no doubt Santos is an improvement on Arsene Wenger's current full-back option, the Fenerbahce man has yet to convince many in his homeland. For all his attacking threat, Santos has defensive deficiencies that explain his inability to secure the Brazilian left-back slot as his own.
Given his propensity to surge forward down the left-flank, it will be no surprise to learn that positioning is not alwaysthe 28 year-old's strong-point. It is a common flaw in Brazilian full-backs - who are in many cases expected to provide all the width for a side's attack – often counter-acted by the presence of two holding midfielders.
Another accusation commonly levied at Santos is that he suffers from lapses in concentration. He was dropped from Brazil's squad for the upcoming friendly with Ghana following a glaring error in last month's encounter with Germany. In the midst of an uninspiring all-round performance, Santos was dispossessed in the penalty box to allow Andre Schuerrle to score the winning goal.
Given the different role of the full-back in the English game, there has been much talk emanating out of Brazil that Santos may be used in a more advanced, left wing role for the London club. However, given Arsenal's wealth of options on the flanks, this is far more likely to be utilised as a back-up option.
However, Arsene Wenger's enjoyment of attacking full-backs should mean Santos is a good fit for the club's system - especially if Alex Song and Emmanuel Frimpong are combined at the base of the midfield. He has struck up a good relationship with Neymar on the left flank of the Brazilian side, overlapping whilst the youngster cuts infield, and Wenger will hope Santos can replicate this with Gervinho.
If Arsenal's coaching staff can work with the player on the defensive side of his game, the Fenerbahce man could turn out to be an absolute bargain. However, one thing is certain: when in full flow, Andre Santos is a joy to watch and will be a new delight for the Premier League audience to savour.

lol that would be one strange strategy dont you think? Losing 8-2 isnt smart but only fools would do so. This is now written in arsenals history. I dont think Wenger did on purpose but he didnt have choice i guess.getdarker wrote:Wengers a smart man you know, i think he did this on purpose, last minute deals, bad start to the season, losing to man u(ok maybe not tht ) but he may have wanted to let other teams think we were shyte etc.get fans to hate him and boom were challenging for the PL AND CL just like tht again. hmmm
