When is the last time a big brains tactical switch in a knockout round actually work? Knockout rounds have so much variance that it doesn't make sense to put players in unfamiliar systems when they are already playing in a chaotic environment. It's even worse in international football due to the lack of training.

Also Pogba has been majestic, even when France were not playing well he was providing delicious balls.

He's smartened up at Milan. I don't think I've heard any reports of bad behaviour similar to the instances he had in the past.

For me international football is common sense football. You don't have the time to train intricate patterns like you do in club football.

Put your best players in a simple system. Use the same spine over a few years so you build an identity, and keep out any toxic players from the squad. If you have players who have a connection at club level, use it at the international level to take advantage of those dynamics.

With the lack of training and thus lower level of quality, individual quality reigns supreme. However, you have to create the conditions needed to bring out that individual quality, and tinkering in the knockout rounds is almost never the answer.
