The Outer Worlds
The Outer Worlds is a new single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.
In The Outer Worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship that was lost in transit to Halcyon, the furthest colony from Earth located at the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy it. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.
Key Features
The player-driven story RPG: In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.
You can be flawed, in a good way: New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren't particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.
Lead your companions: During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.
Explore the corporate colony: Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything... except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.

I have never heard of Obsidian, but this does sound intriguing. I wonder how deep the exploration system goes. It's got my attention, that's for sure. Reminds a little bit of Destiny in some of the outfit designs and Mass Effect too.

Nice, seems to go back New Vegas skills and dialogue, hopefully will sell a lot more than FO76 and Zenimax will be forced to back down from milking and conning people. Only have one question before buying blindly, what's the engine used and its limitations?

They are historically known for making great RPGs, mostly known for branching storytelling, decisions that matter in lots of ways etc etc.
In recent years they've had financial issues but before that they've been credited for some of the most loved RPGs ever made.
Hopefully that's behind them now and they can make some great games.

Sounds like a winner to me. I'll be adding this one to the list.

Uses Unreal Engine 4 but didn't see any cell transitions so don't know how they are handled. Looks slightly too arcade for my taste, like CP77, but still probably buy.

Re: The Outer Worlds
Yeah the gameinformer guy just made a stupid joke and nobody decided to actually point it out.
It's one of the reasons i don't like listening to them, full of stupid jokes and lack any sort of intelligence when it comes to actually talking about the important aspects to a reveal.
Considering how many exclusive reveals they get it's hard to ignore how insufferable they can often be.

Re: The Outer Worlds
They consider the game as a "next generation of throwback RPG"
The game is "bigger than small".
There are two planets, but there are also moons, dwarf planets, gas giants, asteroids, and space stations.
No space suits, all places you can go to have breathable air.
The player character will always be human.
The character creator will have presets, adjustable via sliders.
You can name your character. Your companions call you "captain" or "boss".
You're "effectively" putting points into skills at the start of the game with someone commenting on those choices.
There are about 24 flaws in the game, but you can only have 3 in a normal playthrough (4 on Hard, 5 on Supernova).
No morality system, but a reputation system.
There are factions players can join.
They "hope" you can beat the game without killing anybody. You can certainly beat it by killing everybody.
The game is set in our galaxy, but in a different timeline.
FTL travel works with "discontinous velocity": You accellerate close to light speed, then skip past it to go faster.
No intelligent alien races.
No kids.
There is a day/night cycle.
No 3rd person.
No classic, high spectacle boss fights, but certainly more challenging encounters.
You can shoot people in specific body locations and have them react to it.
You can put your gun away.
No radio or something.
You can wear hats and helmets.
There's a cool looking heavy armor, but it's not completely sealed like Power Armor.
Ther are laser weapons.
There's hacking but without a mini game.
You can get robots to turn on each other.
No taming/controlling of alien animals.
You don't need to have companions.
No answer on whether all companions are human.
Companions each have side quests which, upon completion, improve their combat ability.
Companions fall unconcious in combat normally, but on Supernova - the hardest difficulty - they die.
You can not upgrade your space ship.
There'll be lots of endings. And ending slides.
They'd like for people to be able to mod, will look into support for that after shipping.
They'd love if there were DLC worlds.
No microtransactions.
They're talking about New Game Plus.
Guaranteed release in 2019.
They have "one solid write-up" and some ideas for a sequel.
No co-op in this one or the next.
Release on Steam, X-Box, PS4. "No idea" on Switch version.
"Let's hope" for 60 FPS on console. "Pretty sure" on 4K support on console.
The Microsoft purchase has not affected the game.
About 20% of the current team worked on New Vegas, about 3% on Fallout 1&2.

Re: The Outer Worlds
I'm considering it. I'm not really in the mood for a big RPG, but I seem to recall reading that this was smaller in scale compared to their other work, 20-25 hours. That seems alright.

Re: The Outer Worlds
Sci fi Fallout basically, it's the same people who made Fallout New Vegas and the first two Fallouts.
But it's not Bethesda so I'm assuming that the quests and story won't suck ( considering the history of Obsidian it's a safe bet)

Re: The Outer Worlds
Most of the negative Outer Worlds reviews seem to boil down to "it's not Skyrim enough," in some. Trade off of using Unreal rather than Bethesda's engine.
— jez (@JezCorden) October 22, 2019
Don't expect the same open world scope as a Creation Engine RPG, it's a more focused experience more like Mass Effect 2/3.
Imagine thinking this is a negative, it's a good thing imo.
