Anyone else watched it?
I've heard a lot of good things about it. Is it depressing though?

I've seen it has a lot of good reviews and sexist neckbeards on FB complain that its feminist propaganda.

I don't mind watching depressing stuff. I just have to be in the right mood for it.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
Glad to hear that about Glow, BC. Gonna try it myself as well.
As for Handmaid's Tale. Yes, it's depressing. And yes it's bleak, brutal and oppressive, but it's also incredibly atmospheric, well written, has tongue-in-cheek dialogue from a strong lead (Offred's inner monologues give me Dexter-vibes) and the cinematography is fantastic. A must watch honestly.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
@elitedam yep it is depressing. But for people who have survived stuff like Manchester by the Sea and 13 Reasons Why recently, I don't think this would be much. I think here, unlike others, the idea is far more depressing than the actual story.
@M99 Not surprised by the propaganda bs. And I think that's a cover up more than anything to hide their actual intentions. People can't accept truth perhaps. It do show men in a somewhat negative light, but honestly what I felt was the writer was simply warning us of a disturbing truth which easily could happen in the future(/or is happening right now in some messed up cultures) if we aint careful.
Its a good thing to sometimes view an artwork just as an artwork. If there's indeed a propaganda and which is clear to see I would condemn that too. Here even if subtly there is one, I think overall depth of the subject and the way its executed (which is obviously perfect, those performances by some of the actors, like Elizabeth Moss for example not to mention, the show's peach of a cinematography). For those reasons, I believe it ultimately deserves to be viewed primarily as a piece of art.
Perhaps we need to get a hold of the source material by Margaret Atwood.
Because I am yet to understand a lot of things here. The show was very vague in depicting especially the pre-Gilead, at least for me.

Firenze wrote:it's entertaining but I'd be surprised if you didn't end up dropping it after a couple seasons, I watched most of it before stopping. It falls into a rhythm and recycles feuds and plotlines constantly, like a character will get development and you will think it's completely wrapped up and then it starts all over again rinse and repeat. You start to see the pattern and it becomes pretty boring.
Fell away from suits for this reason, it rehashes plots like nothing before it.
Every time you think a situation is wrapped up the individual comes back with something else and nothing is ever truly finished.
Worth watching for 2-3 seasons though, up until that point it's entertaining.

Watched it after reading your recommendations - 6h well spentHapless_Hans wrote:M99 wrote:The Night Manager was legit. Was basically a 6 hours James Bond film minus Aston Martins and big action set pieces. Are me and James the only ones who watched it here?
Nah I saw it. Was quality, if a bit too slick for my taste. Also the woman was unbelievably hot

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
Has anyone seen Broadchurch/is it good?
I've just come across it for the first time. I don't know anything about it other than that the whole shows tone was influenced by Olafur Arnalds and he does all the music for it (present day composer), an artist I've appreciated since middle school. Looks like it's been well received.

Emmys should be shut down. Absolutely disgraceful nominees given...
They're just nominating beased on names. I refuse to believe they actually saw the nominated shows.
There's too much TV for academy members to vote for TV awards, it's not movies where you can watch one in 2 hours.

What do people think about 'It's always sunny in Philadelphia'?
Just starting it now due to peer pressure. 1st episode was quite good.

I'm not. Just selected sitcoms. I like this one so far. 12 seasons is a bit put off. Does it maintain consistency?

If you guys make it to S09 there is a hilarious episode called Flowers for Charlie written by the showrunners of GoT.
Ever since then there's been speculation that the Sunny showrunners will be invited to write a GoT episode, tentatively titled "The Gang Brings Down the Wall"

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
Used my HBO Now subscription to watch The Leftovers. Its really good, I'm glad I watched it but I have seen lot of people on the internet call it one of the greatest shows of all time which I really don't see.
Takes a while to get going in season 1 but it turns to be quite great. Season 2 was my favorite and season 3 should have gotten acting nominations for Carrie Coon and Justin Theoroux, maybe Eccleston too.

- Spoiler:
- I'm not sure how I feel about Kevin having the ability to return from the dead but those dream/afterlife sequences are brilliant. That and Carrie Coon's acting were the best parts about the show.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 5
Half way through it and it's definitely not at Breaking Brad's level.... Not even close. Lacks the same menace.
Despite that, a good show that will very likely get better and better.
