UEFA Champions League Revamp
From 2018-19, top 4 leagues will have 16 guaranteed spots in CL. UEFA ExCo to approve late August.

Re: UEFA Champions League Revamp
From what I gathered, this will greatly disadvantage the smaller leagues. I read that the Swiss have already been going ballistic about this for some days.
And the 4th place of the big 4 will go to some "historically valuable club" however they will calculate that.

Disgraceful, just another way to guarantee "Big Teams" make it to the group stages. Another step before a Super League.
Good for Serier A though.

That was a rumor about a wild cards for historical merit to make sure teams like Milan and Liverpool can make the UCL
So I team like Spurs can finish forth and can be left out for Liverpool/United due to historic merit

Re: UEFA Champions League Revamp
Hardly surprised.
At the end of the day, having Man City face off against Inter Milan (based off 15/16 finishing places) will always pull more of an audience and make more money than whichever teams from smaller leagues would be playing in their place under current rules.

Basically the only way Milan has a shot to beat out the likes of Fiorentina and Sassuolo.

It's the other way round you clown. Serie A were/are very close to beating EPL 4th CL spot.
So it's no surprise to see the rule changed. As if Italian league carries that much influence these days....

Re: UEFA Champions League Revamp
So if Inter finishes 4th and Milan finishes 5th, who would get in? Does Milan jump ahead of Inter because of "history"? What would be the definition of history in that case?

EPL set to lose 4th spot and they change the rules
Probably good for Serie A in the long run though, although the "historical" 4th spot is some bullsh...
I guess now Milan will be back in the CL regardless of what happens in the league? Sassuolo fans crying everywhere

How is this.. I don't even.. OK.
Just look at this year's CL qualification knockout round teams and compare them to the top4 of the top 4 leagues.
Anyway, bad move for smaller teams, good move for overall quality, marketing and money.
Not quite sure what to think of it yet, but that historical thing has to be removed asap

Re: UEFA Champions League Revamp
How are they going to calculate that??? More lack of transparency IMO. Also, what motivation will a club have if they can get into CL even if they finish mid-table...or worse. And the 4th place of the big 4 will go to some "historically valuable club" however they will calculate that.

Re: UEFA Champions League Revamp
The whole historical value thing seems like its just specifically made for Milan and Liverpool. How pissed would Roma or City be when they finish 4th and don't get CL because 6th placed Milan and Liverpool have to go?

Top 4 in UEFA coefficients.
Spain 87.141
Germany 66.784
England 62.748
Italy 60.498
France 43.749
Portugal 42.749
...

Re: UEFA Champions League Revamp
City under Pep would never finish 4th..
Thanks for the co-efficients.. Never realized that France was so far behind
Also pleasantly surprised to find BuLi above PL but not complaining about this one

Re: UEFA Champions League Revamp
City was just an example, pick any other team that finishes above Liverpool except United (who probably will be ranked higher "historically").
If this goes through then the coefficients would effectively not matter anymore for the top 4, as the results of this year only applies to the CL in 18/19, which is when this would come into play.

Yeeeeeah Liverpool.
Think they finished quite often outside the top 4 without any change. However I think there was another english club that missed the top 4 twice in the last 3 years and now we get a change

Re: UEFA Champions League Revamp
This "historical" rule change is dumb as hell, and honestly embarrassing it's even being considered. Whoever finishes in the top 4 should get in, and not get left behind because some other club that finished mid table was slaying it like 30 years ago.

With Leicester in the CL, Serie A will probably go past the EPL this year and will have 4 teams in the CL and EPL 3 in 2018. They are trying to save 4 spots for the EPL.
