It's merely 4 points gap because Brighton lost the direct duel, which counts for 3 points, because Newcastle got 1 whole point instead of 0.5 for the Aston Villa draw (which Brighton have not yet played), and because of the last League cup round.

In terms of league results, things would be very close

Also 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw are awarded in the games against Aston Villa, as an extra incentive to beat Roberto Di Matteo.

Newcastle accordingly got a whole point for their draw against Villa.
Di Matteo might have been sacked in the meantime but of course Brighton have the same rules applied as Newcastle.

So the update should read

and

Chris Hughton 15 - 19 Newcastle United

after MD 18
