Homosexuals in football...
Son of Glenn Hysen, former center back in Liverpool's last league winning team, became the first football player since Justin Fashanu to come out publicly. You may have heard about Fashanu who's career was tumbled after rumours concerning his sexuality were exposed. This caused his trainer to shun him from the team till he eventually decided to leave England and move to USA. He was bribed in confessing about his sexuality. For a player who was once the most expensive black player (Norwich to Nottingham), this was certainly a step back in his football career.
This was back in 1990. Anton Hysen (20) become the first player to come out since then and did so during an interview. A brave move for sure. Anton has earlier played in the Swedish top division but currently plays in the second division.

Graeme le Saux was a married man but rumours about his sexuality become to spread. Mainly because he was not involved in the "Macho Cultural" of football unlike many of his team mates. Instead he was down to earth and had other interests. He was often subject to taunting for both players and supporters during his career. "Le Saux takes it up his arse" was a chant that was often sung against him to put him off balance.
What is your opinion? I know many of you come from different culturals and backgrounds. Some may be more open to this than others.
Statistically there must be more homosexuals in the sport. Why do players not come out? Is it intimidating in the locker room?
Well, hats off the Anton Hysen anyways.

I'm positive their are lots of players that don't come out because they know the footballing community will look at them very differently

Why do they need to come out? It's fine to tell your friends and family, but the football world really doesn't care about your sexuality. We only care about your performance on the pitch not off.

By the way, the way the Justin Fashanu saga was handled was a disgrace to humanity and everyone involved in it should burn in hell

Re: Homosexuals in football...
It is terrible that they can't come out....
But I get the problems with it, somewhat questionable behaviour like piling up on top of each other to celebrate a goal etc. is only "okay" because players are supposed to be hyper-straight; its "team-bonding". However, if one of those guys was gay, that element of the game would turn a bit odd...
Inbefore Pique.

Re: Homosexuals in football...
Only in Germany have you had iconic players say (not come out) that it would be OK for gay guys to come out, no one would care. Of course, Germany has such a liberal culture, I doubt it would be taken the same in Italy, for example.
I don't see any problems by it, except maybe shower sessions would be a bit more awkward.

Re: Homosexuals in football...
It is probably more acceptable to come out in the MLS too.
And Sushi, which German players said that? I only remembered Lahm saying that it was a bad idea.

Re: Homosexuals in football...
Mario Gomez said it here.
Lahm didn't say it was bad, he said it would be tough, but for he would not have any problem whatsoever playing along side one. He'd have his support.
These are 2 of Germany's biggest footballers, so it's a big push to incite gay players to come out, at least in Germany.

Re: Homosexuals in football...
You kidding? They'd get constantly harrassed by the media, team mates might not look at them the same, some would get doubled up on racist and then homophobic abuse...
If you still have problems with racism, it's pretty obvious what would happen.
Unfortunately, most of the world is a big, huge homophobe.

Obviously gay players don't feel like it's a safe environment to come out. It's a shame.

Sexuality is a big part of who you are, and constantly living in a lie is not what I'd call enjoyable. If you wanna hook up with guys, you can't. If you wanna do things that might not be considered "manly", you can't (although Ronaldo does it ). The cultural pressure against gays is bad enough, but I imagine it must be worse being a star constantly under the spotlight and your life dissected daily by the media.
It would be good for someone important to come and and say "yeah, I'm gay. So what?". I'm sure plenty would follow.

Re: Homosexuals in football...
They won't and can't come out because there's a huge stigma attached to homosexuality and there are many bigots around.
Racism still exists in modern societies and in top football so I doubt the case would be any different with homophobia.

Re: Homosexuals in football...
It depends on the country. I agree that in Germany or Spain there wouldn't be a problem at all. People is open-minded.
However, it is also true that gay men are less interested in football, and I'm pretty sure they are underrepresented in professional football, but sure there are more than 0.
