I don't think it would've made any difference if he didn't. From what I've seen of him at Arsenal since last year, he's often looked quite disinterested, and I don't think his position on the pitch had anything to do with it.

funnily enough he played some of his best football under Arteta from the left... he played through the middle most recently and was absolutely abysmal except for a few flashes here and there

ultimately i believe it was a clash of egos between the two, they rubbed each other the wrong way, and it ended up with Auba caring less and less

It's very understandable that he's leaving. He just hasn't performed, or been anywhere near his best, ever since he's joined Chelsea.
