Bump.
Almost a year without replies in this thread despite the situation in Ukraine
I just wanted to ask how long do people think this new ceasefire will hold? I'll give it two weeks.

There've already been exchanges of fire and casualties on both sides since the cease fire supposedly came into effect. So depending on how you measure it the cease fire hasn't held at all.

Re: Euromaidan demonstrations & Russia's intervention in Ukraine
the way i see it is russia is planning to attack from 2 sides: belarus and crimea
Ukraine is basically fucked. They have no natural borders, only endless lowlands/plains. Best they could do is retreat to the Dnieper river but thats basically already midway through and they'd be getting flanked from up north as well

This certainly looks like it could be very serious, hope it's a bluff by Putin to scare off any NATO talks

Britain Says Moscow Is Plotting to Install a Pro-Russian Leader in Ukraine
In a highly unusual public statement, backed by U.S. officials, London named the putative head of a potential puppet government but few other details.

Seems like everyone might have just given Russia a fuckton of military equipment for free.

Don't want to sanction Russia/Putin in case he invades.
Refuse to deliver weapons to Ukraine despite being one of the world's top arms exporters
Head of the navy says Ukraine would never regain Crimea, and Putin deserves respect (resigns afterwards, admittedly)
Very different stance from rest of the allies.

@vivas you've had decades to wean off coal and NG, and yet you only seem to dig your heels in every time. Germans should embrace renewable and nuclear rather than keep demonizing them (especially nuclear), and maybe then you'd be nasters of your own destiny rather than forced to appease Putin against your better sense.

Can't get off coal and gas with our corrupt politicians, conservatives are all in the pockets of big oil, coal and gas, socialists are all in the pockets of the Kremlin, we're fucked either way.

Wtf is that source
Poland, Britain and Ukraine is such a random "security pact" that I don't believe it for a second.

Re: Euromaidan demonstrations & Russia's intervention in Ukraine
Why is it called Euro'maidan'? Maidan means field mostly used as an aggressive term of calling someone pleb onto the field to prove their point in Hindi and every time I see this thread, it makes me chuckle

Maidan just means square doesnt it? The place where these protests took place is called "Maidan Nezalezhnosti" meaning Independence Square

Languages going back in time to join hands while cultures and ethnicities draw their borders and start war, exactly what is wrong in this era

Btw Maidan in Hindi means field or 'action area', usually a playing field for Cricket, Football etc or sports so equivalent to a square/pitch where an action passes.

My work has a vendor in Ukraine. They're being relocated from Kiev to Croatia and have to get on a bus tomorrow at 2 am. Will take them there in a 26 hour trip and keep them there for a month

Your company wouldn't spring for a flight?
Anyway what a bizarre thing to write. Their job tells them to get on a bus and relocate for a month? Are they employees or slaves?
I'm going to need details on this one. Sounds more like they're running a meth lab than a store

Re: Euromaidan demonstrations & Russia's intervention in Ukraine
I don't really have more details. I think it's the vendor that paid, so they must have been the ones to cheap out
I think they had a choice but decided to take it.
Ukrainians are now safely relocated to Croatian beaches and enjoying the warmer weather.

Re: Euromaidan demonstrations & Russia's intervention in Ukraine
Looks like things have stalled. Ukraine is now betterprepared than in 2014 and have been supplied with ammo and all kinds of rocket launchers and weapons. The russian army is not that great. I heard half of their vehicles have troubles starting in cold weather, the generals are not in favor of an invasion, the army itself is not that well-trained and would incur many casualties against mobilized ukrainian forces let alone NATO army they stand no chance against. Putin overplayed his hand and doesnt know what to do now probably. Retreating his army will be bad optics for him, any invasion is unwise. Turkey is also probably on alert, they alone would wipe out these russian forces.

According to German newspaper Der Spiegel, the US Secret Service, CIA and the Pentagon are said to have received intel of an 'exceptionally detailed' invasion plan, scheduled for February 16.
I was thinking he won't do it but we'll see in the coming days I guess
