Like many autocrats, basically anything Erdogan does is for the benefit of his domestic prestige. The economy has gone downhill under his rule, most Turks, especially the urban ones, don't really love his very conservative brand of Islam, and Turkish families are networked really well, while Erdogan has censored Turkish media, they have absolutely no problem getting all information they need from foreign relatives, so his grasp on the Turkish government is tenuous - he absolutely needs to look good domestically, and he needs to keep finding foreign threats to unite the Turkish people behind him, before they start questioning whether he's doing more harm than good.

This is just delusion. It’s another arms race Russia can’t win. US are happy and will keep supplying a shitload of weapons. A clash between Russia and the west was always going to happen. The fact that the US is not endangering a single American soldier while weakening and fucking Russia for years to come is priceless. These billions in aid are nothing in that context. Russia will destroy its economy and military while Uncle Biden sits back and enjoys the show, as grim as that is for the proxy nation defending itself in U.S. interest is for this war to continue, probably if I had to guess they were hoping for it to happen

Reads like the West has given up on Ukraine and is willing to negotiate a surrender.

The thinking is that Russians should bleed and suffer economically and demographically is success enough, without Ukraine "winning" per se (that is misguided thinking)

Backing out paves way for full annexation of Ukraine in the future and a power shift in the Black Sea, so where is the success in that.

The only way I can rationalize this is, the West wants to establish a peace now to rebuild and prepare for a great war in 10-15 years. But then they'll risk their own men and women whereas now only Ukrainians suffer casualties. Everyone felt now is the right time to go all out but I guess not
