Re: Picking an All-time World XI
3-4-3 with a diamond in midfield, I genuinely think this is the most attacking side I can possibly make while maintaining a solid defence & good balance.
.......................[Schmeichel]................
............................Baresi....................
.......Thuram..............................Maldini
........................Beckenbauer................
..........Redondo.......................Cruyff....
..........................Maradona...................
......Messi......................................Best
.........................Van Basten..................
On paper it looks like 5 attackers & 5 defenders but with Cruyff`s completeness its like 6 defenders & 5 attackers, I wouldn`t do this set-up if say Zidane or Platini were in midfield instead of Cruyff, its Cruyff`s completeness that allows me to make this team keep a good balance, Cruyff should be a lock for every team IMO.

Re: Picking an All-time World XI
Iker Casillas
-------C. Gentile-----A. Hansen-----P. Maldini-------
---------------------F. Redondo -------------------
---C. Johnston--------E. Davids----------------R. Carlos
-------------------M. Platini -------------
-----------------Raul ------Ronaldo-----------------
Formation:3-4-1-2
Coach: Fabio Capello
I think my team may be a bit more defensive than most mentioned here, but i think its more functional than most. I couldnt leave either Maldini or Roberto Carlos out, so i plonked Carlos out wide in a Wing back role
Redondo and Edgar Davids form the engine room of the team, with Craig Johnstone and Roberto Carlos providing width down the flanks.
Further forward, Platini has a free reign of the space behind my 2 strikers. I always fancied a strike partnership over a lone striker, so both Raul & Ronaldo make the cut.
I got nothing to worry about defensively, any attacker gets close, Gentile will bite his face off, simple as.
Also, any free kick within a 25 yrd radius is a sure goal, Platini doesnt miss.
MY TEAM WIPES THE FLOOR WITH YOURS

I know what you mean, it seems criminal leaving Pele out, I could replace Messi with Pele & have the rule that all players must be retired... but that rule aside if I had to choose between replacing one of the front 3 with Pele it would probably be Best, Messi has established himself & did enough to warrant a place in a world 11 more than Best, Van Basten keeps the strikers position, I think he`s the best for that position tbh, Pele was more a second striker that drops deep similar to Messi.
Marco can also drop back & put balls through or drop off to the wings & put crosses in, he was very complete with phenomenal ability but I`d be happy with him hanging around up front, he has the technique, intelligence, skill & vision to get involved when needed & the aerial ability & finishing touch to be a perfect target man as well... in short, I`d always have Marco van Basten in my team, he was the perfect striker IMO, a striker that could fit into any formation & be effective due to his completeness.

Re: Picking an All-time World XI
I usually change my players depending on the formation because balance is the most important factor... of course there are some great players that have the quality AND adaptability to get in all my teams but usually changes must be made depending on formation..... here is my 4-3-3....
