Re: World Soccer Magazine, Greatest XI of all time
I think there is a lack of defensive midfielders there.
And Zidane seems to be the Arbeloa of "all time great" lists. Always gets a mention yet no one knows why.

Beckenbauer never played as a CB. He played as a sweeper which was used completely differently to any position today. He was basically a reverse Regista. S Him at CB or lb in that formation is farcical tbh. Zidane and Maradona as CM? HAHAHA. Good luck with yur defending goals of 2013. Messi and Pele together? Pele wasn't a #9 and was more of a SS. Bobby Moore is not thee best CB of all time. That English Bias. Neither is Maldini

Agreed. I would put Xavi in CM ahead of Zidane anyday tbh.

Re: World Soccer Magazine, Greatest XI of all time
Read the actual article.
Over 70 journalists from all over the world were asked to name their best ever 11. The overall 11 was made from the names appearing the most.
It's not meant to be functional. Nor there is any bias.

Re: World Soccer Magazine, Greatest XI of all time
Something more balanced:
Messi
Cruyff Platini Maradona
Matthäus Rijkaard
Maldini Nesta Scirea Cafu
Buffoon
Old school Serie A + Cruyff and Messi.
Hipster. U got too much time or what?

Nah was just interested why they named a SS and a CAM as their CMs

Re: World Soccer Magazine, Greatest XI of all time
People continue to revere Lev Yashin :lol:Despite:
-Spending his whole career in the Soviet League
-Garnering praise for 78 Soviet apperances
-Half of his matches being played with a slow, leathery ball soaked with water to have it even slower with the addition of more mud to slow it down
-Modern Goalkeepers having to face far more circumstances
And then there is Bobby Moore.
Votes/Lists like these are usually made by Americans or English, but mostly Americans.
Oh yea, and the thread was made to highlight that Messi is in the list.
And 4-4-2...LOL.

Meh these things are always poorly constructed and they never get them right.
I can't really force myself to care at all if i'm honest, i'll leave the rest of you to debate it all.

Re: World Soccer Magazine, Greatest XI of all time
I am not someone that denies zidanes greatness but i dont think he should be there.
Moore is fine, no bias. Complete defender, reading of the game, one on one play, leader, classy, ultra cultured on the ball, world cup winner,
Messi has not earned a place, done nothing in his career so far to get in this. 3 champions league titles, firstly were he didnt feature in the final, the latter 2 were run by his teammates. Has to win a champions league or world cup without being led there by the hands. Since barca declined to being only the second best team in the world the last 2 years hes been nothing but flop in the champions league. 2014 is make or break
im just joking #shitstormaverted

Re: World Soccer Magazine, Greatest XI of all time
who cares really. this type of XI comes up once every 3 months and no one can ever agree on anything when it comes to the best of all time.

Re: World Soccer Magazine, Greatest XI of all time
Well the magazine that made the vote is pretty respectable and has operated from -60. Votes like these don't come every 3 months, and the reason for it isn't to agree unanimously what's the greatest lineup, but to collectively determine what it is.vanDEEZ wrote:who cares really. this type of XI comes up once every 3 months and no one can ever agree on anything when it comes to the best of all time.

Would be a boring counter attacking team because they also voted Mourinho has the first choice manager

To make the thread interesting. ( we probably have done this a lot of times )
What would be your ( all of you) greatest 11 of all time ( The players you have WATCHED)

Re: World Soccer Magazine, Greatest XI of all time
Personally I think it's pointless comparing people from such different time periods.
Different rules, different ball, different tactics, different opposition etc etc.

Re: World Soccer Magazine, Greatest XI of all time
I think a more efficient way to hold this poll would be to do a poll per position. That way a DM would have to make the list and players that did not play certain positions would not get picked for them rather than just a random assortment of great AMs as wingers, 9s, etc.

Agreed, the one year that he had to carry Barca rather than the other way around he got battered by Bayern 7-0.
