Re: Picking an All-time World XI
Anyone ever thought that great attacking players of old had not much pace as it was not a requirement and the classic number 10 was still as useful position.
Riquelme was a classic no 10. What happened to him?
Pele would have fitted in todays game. But Puskas was fat and old when he played for Madrid.

Fat and old and still had better ball control than most players I watch today lmao

I have a similar formation to this, but even the great Raul and Ronaldo cannot compete with Puskas and Di Stefano.

Re: Picking an All-time World XI
Probably the best thread of this forum, I will come up with my team(s) tomorrow. Guaranteed to beat yours all. And its great to see Arq showing some appreciation to Bergomi, Scirea, Rivera etc. Absolute legends. Arq when I have time I really would like to discuss some Serie A history with you, this past year I went deep into Calcio, and you really know your Italian football. Will post my teams tomorrow, and it won't disappoint.

Re: Picking an All-time World XI
Team number 1. The Cantenaccio team.
Inspire by Nereo Rocco's great AC Milan side and Herrera's Inter.
Yashin is the greatest GK of all time in my opinion. He'll be in most of my teams
The backline, Franz Beckenbauer the sweeper. Attacking sweeper, will direct all the plays like a boss. Will be the Kaiser of the side. Santos and Fachetti are probably the best two attacking fullbacks of all time, in this formation wingbacks are needed and none are better than these two legends. Baresi and Gentile the two brick walls as CBs, with Gentile providing the cynicism needed for Cantenaccio.
Falcao to be the Sani of the side, the deep lying playmaker to provide the accurate passes to the wingbacks and Rivera. Benetti will be to Rivera what Lodetti was to Rivera, his third lung. With Rivera doing zero work in midfield, Benetti will be there to cover for him and do the dirty work. As an anchorman he was probably the best ever, and also very tactically intelligent.
Rivera, there is too much to say about him. In my opinion probably the greatest Italian player of all time, the star of Rocco's Milan. The famous pass the ball to Rivera tactic will be one of the mains of this team. He'll do something with the ball. And Altafini up front, one reason is his a Rivera's partnership was one of the deadliest in history and CFs like Pele, Di Stefano, Puskas, Messi, Ronaldo De Lima etc would never benefit in Cantenaccio styled football team. Altafini is perfect for this team, just like he was to Milan's team.
Substitutes
Goalkeeper: Dino Zoff, Gordon Banks, Gianluigi Buffon/Oliver Kahn
Fullbacks: Paul Breitner, Roberto Carlos, Antonio Cabrini, Javier Zanetti/Carlos Alberto,
Sweeper: Gaetano Scirea, Armando Picchi/Mathias Sammer
CB: Bobby Moore, Alessandro Nesta, Giussepe Bergomi, Fabio Cannavaro
Midfielder: Claude Makalele, Giovanni Trapatonni, Andrea Pirlo, Mario Corsi, Sandro Mazzola, Luis Suarez
CF: Pierino Pratti, Gigi Riva, Angellilo
Team number 2. ATACKKKKKK!
Attacking football at it's finest. With an impenetrable defence of Baresi, Maldini and Bobby Moore. Djalma Santos with a deadly right wing partnership with Gaarincha, Maradona the trequatista and Dzajic, who in my opinion after Didi is the most underrated footballer of time the lift winger. Imaging him and Gaarincha at opposite wings=mind blown. A zillionaire's version of Robbery. And of course Pele the complete striker terrorizing defences, getting fed by Maradona and feeding his other teammates in turn.
Substitutes
Goalkeeper: Dino Zoff, Gordon Banks, Gianluigi Buffon/Oliver Kahn
Fullbacks: Fachetti, Breitner, Roberto Carlos/Antonio Cabrini, Javier Zanetti/Carlos Alberto
CB: Alessandro Nesta, Fabio Cannavaro/Daniel Pasarella, Claudio Gentile, Fernand Hierro/Giussepe Bergomi
Midfielders: Pep Guardiola, Claude Makalele/Patrick Vieira, Falcao, Giovanni Trapatonni, Michel Platini, Zico
Wingers: Ronaldinho, Paco Gento, Dragan Dzajic, Jairzinho, Stanley Matthews
CF: Eusebio, Ronaldo De Lima, Ferenc Puskas
Team Number 3. Tiki Taka.
Modelled entirely after Barcelona. Yashin=Valdes, Santos=Alves, Baresi=Puyol, Moore=Pique, Maldini=Abidal, Redondo=Busquets. Didi=Xavi, Zico=Iniesta, Cruyff=Pedro/Villa, Ronaldo=Eto'o (he would be an excellent false 9 for the side), Messi=Messi. Too lazy to do subs. Xavi will be there, though.
Hope you enjoyed.

Re: Picking an All-time World XI
It pains me to not have Di Stefano in any side. He would be my first choice as a SS followed by Baggio. And also the greatest of all time Pele is only on one team so is Maradona and Cruyyf, might make some more formations later. Maybe a Brazil inspired 4-2-4.

Those are interesting teams, although i think there are a couple of glaring mistakes. In the attack team while i agree that dzajic is very underrated and is one of the finest left wingers of all time, g.best is well.... better, by a distance, he is the only real candidate for left wing imo as he is very far in front of all the other players of that position, if i could compare messi to someone it would be g. best, dribbling, close control, passing, shooting, he was excellent in all those areas. He also had good defensive responsibility in that he would track back and tackle his opponents, and of course he was a player for big occasions, he wouldnt "bottle it" like some players
In the tiki taka team i would place maradona instead of zidane, in some senses zidane was a bit of a maradona-lite, his one touch passing and short passing was fantastic but not as good as maradonas

Re: Picking an All-time World XI
Made some few tweaks. Zico replaces Zidane in team Tiki Taka, he would be perfect in Iniesta role in my opinion. Benetti replaces Rijkaard in Cantenaccio, in that team an anchor man is needed, or as the Italians call it a water carrier, which Rijkaard was not. And yeah Best replaces Dzajic, got a bit carried away there, I just am enraged on how underrated Dragan is. If he played at Madrid instead of Red Star Belgrade, he would be up there with all the GOATs.
