Enrique has been a rock this season.

Coming from the guy who is 16, who claim's Matthaus is better than Xavi when he retired when he was 5 years old

He dosen't have to put on a brilliant defensive Performance to have imporoved at defensively.

And any performance I name will be dicarded because they ween't against notable players or some excuse will be provided.

He is the bes LWB in the world and is good defensively............it's the same thing as Alves a couple years ago when people failed to realise that the guy could actually defend........time will ensure the deteriration of your views....all I have to do is sit back and watch.

To be the best, you have to play brilliantly against the best and not just one or two games. It has to be a consistent run.

I'm not like that. Provide the performance and i'll consider it. I'm nothing if not reasonable.

But I'm sorry, it's a simple fundamental that comes with playing LB, you need to be able to actually be solid defensively. Marcelo ain't.

When the team is up against, is it too much too ask to have your LB to focus soley on his defensive duties? Alves proved himself defensively at Sevilla, don't know who doesn't know this?

He needs to shape-up. Nothing against him attacking wise, but when on D........ I always know the attack is coming down his side.

Alves and defensive usually doesn't go hand in hand really. What Alves has going for him is his insane stamina and speed to which he uses it effectively, very effectively in fact. Alves also knows when to go forward and when to not forward, that usually comes with experience.

Roberto Carlos was never solid defensively but still was an amazing LB. The whole "A full back needs to be defensively solid to be great" is kinda a myth. He just needs to understand his position and have some God damn sense really...

Marcelo vs barca? he was average, made some obvious fools in positioning, but in his duels he was good, and won some important balls upfield against messi and sanchez. Still doesnt master when to push up, and when to stay in position, he needs to stay in the video room longer, instead on jumping on ronaldo's bandwagon all the time.

It's the same thing as always, when he wins a tackle you read "Marcela is amazing, omg, what a defender". well, that's the kind of kneejerk we do in the chat. Problem is, when we stop and recognize that it's just a tackle, others carry it on and inflate his performance afterwards.

I dont think he was awful during the game, and defensively he has left the "sucking" level a while ago, but there are still some obvious issues. However, would like to add that, at the end of the game, the team was crumbling apart, no one was holding the lines no more, players rushing forward recklessly to try something, and barca was just countering,

Like most great full backs, RC3 was known primarily for his attacking prowess. Maldini is an anomaly in that he is primarily known for his defensive prowess at LB and guys like Lahm are known for being equally adept at both. I personally believe that full-backs have a responsibility first to defend and then go forward. Somehow, it's been knocked the other way around and I don't agree with it. full-backs are defenders foremost before they are attackers and so they should be adequately skilled enough to lock down their flanks before marauding forward. Not enough of them do that these days and Marcelo as well as Alves are main offenders.

This. I even said in chat with Jibers that I find issues in his defensive game, such as he goes for the ball instead of covering his man too often, but defensively he is solid, and he has reached a point where he can handle both roles (defense and the attack)

He is easily up there with any left back. He got his positioning right against Barca. Also only reason most attacks come down the right flank is because he is always flying up the LW providing in attack.
