Had to take Sami out. As biased as I was, both Nesta and Puyol were better imo.

Iniesta for me has overtaken Zidane.
Pirlo is just a beast and I do rate Pirlo higher than Xavi (comparing them both in their peaks) so he deserved a mention.

If you are looking for a team that would work perfectly then you must leave out a LOT of ATG great players in order of team balance & there are so many different teams possible to make but here is one of them..... 4-3-3 formation.

.....................[Schmeichel]

........Thuram - Nesta - Baresi - Maldini

........Redondo - Beckenbauer - Cruyff

........Johnstone - Van Basten - Best

Would Nesta be better if he wasn't injured in world cup? It is hard to say, but Cannavaro pushed him self up as a leader of that generation. And his performance was sensational. Who knows what would happen if Nesta wasn't injured, but as i said already that world cup was difference.

What would happened if Van Basten didn't end carrer so quickly?

What would happened if Ronaldo didn't get injured so often?

Would Bergkamp prove himself more if he hadn't had that fear of flying?

Could Baggio be the greatest ever if he scored that penalty? Very Happy

That are all ifs, sometimes you have to stick with the facts.

How high do you rate Sheva, who would you put in striker position? From 1990 till now?

Even with Van Basten retiring right in the heart of his prime he`s still a top 10 all time player, 3 times European player of the year & in my personal opinion the most complete & technically sound centre forward in football history... he almost certainly would be ranked higher if he played another 6-8 years but he showed more than enough to warrant a place in ANY all time 11 without questions being raised, Marco was ridiculously talented & proved it at the very top level in a very strong era. MVB would always make my team, personally.

Lol bro, I know for a fact you never really watched Van Basten and Baresi play- You've only seen a couple of Youtube vids!!! Nedved, are you serious? He wouldn't even make my bench.

Now my 3-4-3 on the other hand is pure class (again in case you missed it the first time):

--------------------------------Casillas
--------------Thuram-----------Hierro----------Maldini
Cafu---------------Viera--------------Seedorf-------------Roberto Carlos
------Messi-------------------Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima----------Ronaldinho

Admit it, its perfection.

The balance isn`t that great in this team to be honest, you have Messi & Ronaldinho as wide front players AND 2 attacking wing backs ?... wouldn`t work.

Wingbacks work best with 3 central defenders, 3 central midfield players and 2 strikers. Your team has no balance & would be all over the place, also, Hierro isn`t good enough defensively to make an all time team, Nesta, Kohler, Sammer etc were far better defenders.

Casillas is a great keeper, no arguments even though I`d have Schmeichel.

Baresi & Thuram, agreed, great defenders.... Roberto Carlos & Hierro, not strong enough defensively, especially Carlos, he`s a liability in defence, Maldini at LB & Nesta at CB are FAR better choices.

Matthaus, no arguments, Javier Redondo ?... you mean Fernando Redondo ?... no arguments... Zidane, best player of his generation, no arguments.

Henry & Laudrup on the wings ?... not terrible choices but George Best, Garrincha & Jinky Johnstone were better outright wingers.

Ronaldo R9 best player ever ?.... I take it you haven`t been watching football long, there were at least 10 better players than Ronaldo, he`s not even the best centre forward ever IMO, Marco van Basten was more complete & technically better, a better overall player as well. I have no arguments with R9 in an all time team because he was one of the best ever but thee best ever he most definitely is not, that`s blasphemy.

Imo this midfield is a perfect mix of flair and steel. People forget how good Davids was, but for me he tops Keane, viera, the whole lot. The combo of him and ronaldinho took barca from midtable to 2nd place i believe in 2003/2004. Just a bulldog, and great on the ball as well. Redondo was one of the classiest cm's ever. Incredible passing and vission and great defensively. Nedved was a beast of a player. As someone said very rare to find a player as good technically who works so damn hard. Still remember his performance which dumped RM from the champion's league. I'm a bit perplexed by people's choice of Zidane to be honest. Yes he is a legend for France and had great performances as Euro 2000/wc 2006, but was never that consistent at club level. I watched him frequently for juve and madrid. He would throw in great performances occasionally. but was often average. I'd honestly pick totti and Ronaldinho who have carried their club sides over him. As forward line, hands down the two best players of the past 20 years.

Your team is decent & has a nice balance, one of the few I`ve seen on here that could actually work.

I think your Zidane comments are bizarre though, you might just have been unlucky in the games you choose to watch him in but he was the best player of his generation & a top 10 all time player... he was better than every player on your team (Messi aside, haven`t made my mind up on that one yet)

I didn't have the pleasure to see Best or Garrincha, neither my father.(in their primes) He told me about Baresi and Matthaus, the best players he has seen in their positions. If I'd make a first 11 from what I've seen on internet that it would be this. (I have change my mind a little bit too)

Casillas
Thuram Beckenbauer Baresi R. Carlos
Redondo Matthaus
Maradona Zidane Cruyff
R9

It's easier to make a first 11 of all time. Of a decade would be better
For example (2000-2010)
Casillas
Thuram Nesta Puyol R. Carlos
Vieira Pirlo
Raul Zidane Dinho
R9

For the 90's

Schmeichel
Cafu Stam Nesta Maldini
Sammer Redondo
Zidane Baggio
R9 Batigol

Good team, from that sort of time frame (mid 90s onwards I`m guessing) I`d probably have the same team... except I`d maybe have Jurgen Kohler in for Cannavaro but both are on the same level so no complaints at all.

Indicative for these kind of discussions. People just spout names of famous players they've seen 2 or 3 small clips of on YouTube. That "5-0, 5-0" thing is one of those nice Laudrup myths for instance. Most people don't even know that Laudrup sat on the bench in THAT Clasico for Barcelona and only came on for Stoichkov when the game was dead and burried.

Don't take it personal.

I see a lot of teams full of great players but slightly out of position, I understand that most of these greats were very complete & are comfortable in different positions but you need to keep some sort balance.

Zidane & Maradona are 2 of my all time favourite players but I grudgingly left both out because I had to choose between those 2 or Cruyff & since Cruyff is better defensively I choose him to partner Redondo in midfield for extra steel, of course everyone is entitled to their own team but sticking the 6 best attacking players in football history in your midfield & forward line doesn`t mean you will always win, you have to keep goals out as well.

Interesting looking at this team because I wanted Van Basten, Cruyff, Maradona, Zidane & Messi in my team, those exact 5 players but couldn`t because there would be no balance, I came to the conclusion that Marco would be my striker no matter what so he was in, it was a nightmare deciding who to drop after that so I decided it would be just retired players (that eliminated Messi)

Then I realised that with the formation I wanted to set up & the players I already had in defence I had to pick only 1 (was hoping to pick 2) of Zidane, Cruyff or Maradona... I opted for Cruyff because he was the more versatile & best defensively... but it killed me leaving out those guys... it had to be done though or my team would have been all over the place. Its harder than it looks to build a perfect team, so many options.

Ya i figured Nedveed and Redondo would be a lot better at holding. Also, look at that back line, no need for much defensive mids with those three.

Yeah, anytime I put Beckenbauer in my midfield instead of my defence I always choose Nesta to fill his defensive position partnering Baresi in a 4 man defence (Thuram & Maldini taking up the LB & RB slots) I think Nesta is the best centre back since Baresi.

The only reason I took out Messi, Zidane & Maradona was due to the defensive side & also the lack of width, I know Messi & Maradona are more than capable of doing a wingers job but their best strengths are thru the middle IMO so I opted for George Best & Jinky Johnstone as my outright wide players (my team is printed on the previous page)
