Can anyone recommend some artists who have truly great voices but don't do classical music? These days there are a lot of great songs because of the beat/melody/tune but the singers mostly don't have a strong, memorable voice which I find annoying. One of the few true artists who stands out is Sia IMO. Any more like her?

I hope this is meant as banter but I'm not fully sure. Laughing I was just going to edit my post and give Copa del Rey as a prime example of an artist who can't sing for shit. Those ultra slow songs so she can somewhat hide that she has no voice at all. rofl

Thinking about it, this reminds me that Christina Aguilera was actually a superb singer. Unfortunately her lyrics were made for 14 year old teenage girls.

"I am beautifuuuuuuuuuullllllllllllllll."

"I am a fighteeeeeeeeeeeer."

Pls go.

Now this is what I'm talking about. Look at her losing her shit from 2:10 onwards. Laughing

She has stage fright lol. She can't sing for shit live.

I don't know if she autotunes or not but nothing stops this from being a bad song.

I think she is just not that good at singing which is why she always sings those ultra slow and easy lyrics. I actually have her "Born To Die" album, I thought she was good when I first found out about her. Then I listened more, listened to her live and figured out the only reason she is famous is because her daddy is rich. She doesn't have any more talent than any random amateur Youtube singer who covers different songs IMO.

Interesting but I can't say I particularly like the type of music she makes (from the quick research that I did so far).

She seems a bit crazy tbh.

Really hard to find someone with a great voice who also does great music. Often it's either great music sung by shitty tenny stars or great artists producing weird music. Mad

Oh she's definitely pretty weird and out there and for that reason she's not for everyone, but you wanted someone who has a great voice (she undeniably does) who makes great music, and I quite like her music so imo she does make great music.

I realized after that you seem to be indicating a fairly broad range of singers here too. I originally had thrown her in there because she's more similar in style to someone like Lana del Rey than someone like Agnes Obel. That being said, unlike Lana, FKA Twigs is legit and is as good live as she is in the studio. So here is a more broad range of singers who have talent.

Agnes Obel- Fuel to Fire:

More classical than I typically listen to, but is a great singer.

Daughter - Youth:

Currently producing some of the best music I've heard in the last couple years. Elena Tonra has an incredible voice and listen to her live and you can see she's not a fraud either. This is Daughter's most popular song but The Wild Youth EP and their most recent album "If you Leave" are both fantastic.

St. Vincent - Digital Witness:

St. Vincent is fantastic and I think actually hit some mainstream success with getting a grammy for best alternative album. That being said, I like her music more as a whole than for her voice, though she does have a good voice in her own right, and she's probably the best show I've seen live. Brilliant frontman (or frontwoman perhaps I should say).

Zella Day - Compass:

Just 20 (I think), Zella Day is someone that I think will gain increasing mainstream popularity in the future. Right now is the time to listen to her before that kind of success makes her music suffer. Currently creating fantastic alternative music and I can confirm that she's not a fraud, I saw her live this summer. Also very attractive and being a year older than me I'm currently pursuing.

I'm not sure if we're only looking at female singers but that was my impression. Hopefully one of these sticks because they're all very good female artists. I also picked these artists because all of them will kill it live as well, and you can rest assured knowing everything you hear is from their natural talent.

EDIT: I will plug one more but one that I shouldn't have to plug. I don't need to say anything about Nina Simone, everyone knows her and rightly so.

By the way, what I'm searching for is "powerful" music. This is obviously great singing:

But it's too ... well ... "calm".

Listen to Sia's "Alive" (can't find it on Youtube right now). The part from 1:16 onwards where she bursts her lungs out ("I'm aliveeeee"), that's where it's at.

Having said that, sometimes it doesn't matter, it's just so well made.

I'm glad you found Dillon, I was actually going to include her in my post, but didn't think she was naturally a talented enough singer to go on my list. I guess if St. Vincent made it she should have. Certainly a decent one and very catchy. Check out "Your Flesh Against Mine" from the same album.

You've certainly found one of my weak points. I prefer softer music to anything that will include women belting it out...so I don't know many powerful female singers. I mean, I would put Nina Simone from my original list on there, but otherwise I don't have many. I can provide and continue to provide more artists who are incredibly talented females but as far as power goes, eh. Mariah Carey and Beyonce are powerful, all credit to them, though I don't care for their music.

While we are on talented female singers I would like to plug Joanna Newsom. Quite amazing, one of my favorite female artists in the present day.

Joanna Newsom - Occident:

EDIT: Would like to point out she's categorically not a powerful singer lol

Sigur Ros - Festival:

Personally my favorite. Are we talking about our personal favorite or what we think is the GOAT? Because then I might consider Bohemian Rhapsody.

Either way, I'm going to stick with Festival.

I don't mean favorite.

I literally mean GOAT. In your opinion which song is GOAT? And it has to be just one.

I have one in mind. Will share when after a few more replies.

Successful? Mainstream? Well received worldwide?

Even if a song is loved by most people, there's always 5% who will not like it.
