Could someone post a summary of this barca gate thing or accusation going on? I see it on some tabloids but I never read them cos it's always biased (whether for or against). Also I haven't placed much stock on it cos i don't expect anything to happen from it tbh. But now I seem to see news about it everyday. Is it as bad as the juve Moggi accusations or just some folks trying to get noticed?

Barca hired a company, which then hired Negreira's company for "video analysis reports", and then Negreira (who was VP of the referee commitee at the time) reportedly cashed some of that money out  and spent it on blow and hookers. This was all a smokescreen and in the meantime barca officials bribed individual refs behind closed doors in order to gain favorable ref decisions but there's really no concrete evidence unless individual refs come out and testify to that. While all of this is unfolding, Laporta is cooking the meanest roast beef barbecue that his grandma used to make and the recipe is passed on from generation to generation. All men and women are invited to attend; some would say it will be mes que un barbecue. Behind the scenes, Laporta says if you're going to get relegated, at least do it in style.

Thanks both of you, I know absolutely zilch about the story but it just keeps popping up in my feeds (not the background story, but a bunch of he say she say). The modern day media is way more efficient than when I was growing up. Updates on a story you have no idea about hits you so much, after a while it's like "let me even find out what the hell is going on".

My takeaway thus far

Those supposed analysis reports on refs do exist (Valverde also confirmed they did exist and his assistant saw/had them). Barca paid for them 7.3m in 17 years which amounts to about 400k per year and it seems like a lot but aside from weekly ref reports it was also for video reports on youth players and multiple other stypes of scouting etc. For a company the size of Barca which is famous for overpaying for players and everything else, it's not that crazy, 400k is a droplet in the ocean per year.

The articles that came out yesterday may POSSIBLY shed some light on why these "reports" were rather expensive. Some claim that an ex-Barca directive got paid a 50% comission on the payments to Negreira. In this context, this seems more like crooked Barca directors funneling cash out of the club to their personal accounts rather than using it to bribe the refs.

There is indeed an intense rivalry between Barca and RMad and their fans, but there is a bit of an exception to that that you two fanatics appear to have missed! If you look thru the details of Barca’s refinancing (i know looking up finances is a bit of a stretch for both of you), you will find that Florentino Perez was personally involved in helping Laporta get some of those economic deals. Both presidents recognize that strong competition between them is needed to be successful and among the top clubs yet alone that la liga survives because of the two strong clubs. It’s something the two of them know, but not that idiot Tebas. At the same time, they both recognize that there has been corruption at Barca, at least with the past two presidents. This whole barcagate began with investigation of that corruption and the whole referee investigation began by the discovery of under the table payments and a suspected money laundering investigation. Whether or not, evidence comes out of referee influence, is still unknown, but there certainly are indications of it and the explanations of club are not sufficient to stop the investigations. At the same time, the entire justice system is weak in terms of effectiveness, just look at the investigations / results into the racial abuse!

So the big question is will there be any consequences to Barca and the probable answer is as Tito said, likely nothing other than a 2nd previous president ending up in jail.
