Forza Azzuri!
I really support Germany and Italy only during internationals
Austria shouldn't pose a big problem.

Italy should be alright on this one. Unless a major mess up.
Austria have good team work starting from back to midfield but from what I have seen as long as Italy covers its track they should be alright

Austria aren't in a great place atm, team lacks balance, Alaba being their leader and driving creative force means they always stand deep and look for the pass backwards, arguably they'd be better if they ignored him a bit.
Their forwards aren't really having a great time these past few weeks.
Should be a cake walk for Italy, though obviously knockout games are almost never a joke, and if Austria decide to sit deep completely, it could take a while to break them down. They're not a bad side. I'd say comparable to Switzerland, just worse balance? They lack the punch of a Shaqiri or Embolo, but have pretty good control with the midfield around Sabitzer, though I assume that won't matter against Locatelli etc...
Best summary of a relatively (irrelevant) unknown Austria by Viva from another thread.
It should be relatively straightforward as I cannot see what Austria can offer what Switzerland did not let alone Turkey. Plus Wales were a better team as collectively and individually.
Only Italy's occasional lapses in concentration or taking Austria too easily can be their downfall but on sunday they will employ a full squad unlike the B one against Wales and the full squad with Verratti most likely slotted in.

I think Arnautović is a legit threat. But obviously you'd think Italy can manage to get through this one, they are just pulling teams apart at the moment.
Will Austria look to play with 5 at the back? That might be a solution to slow them down.

That might be so. They're changing formations and changing where Alaba plays regularly

Austria gonna have to surprise Italy and then try and holdout the result if the wanna get through. Feel like that will be the plan but I don't know much about the Austria manager.

Been looking at Austria and in what they plan for Italia and I can say they will be much better than what people expect.
Already planning a "cage" for Coutinho so looking to nullify the Italian midfield, who is the epitome of what makes them so good.
In for a surprise.

last Italy lineup against Austria (France 98)
no idea why transfermarkt gave the Arsenal citizenship to Pagliuca but ok
It's the match where Nesta got injuried seriously and replaced by Bergomi after 4 minutes. Nesta was never particulary lucky in NT, he won't play as starter also WC 2006 and replaced by Materazzi soon for same reasons

Why was Pagliuca representing Arsenal?
Yeah, Nesta was really unlucky. It's saddening actually. For me, he's the best defender of his generation. His clean tackles are just majestic, almost therapeutic. But due to his non-involvement for Italy in WC 2006, Cannavaro (deservedly) won the best player, and Nesta become relatively underhyped when people talk about past defenders. Cannavaro was a great defender, but he declined quite quickly after he joined Real Madrid while Nesta still maintained high level until he left Milan. But yeah, Nesta was sadly injured far too often

^ Pagliuca one of first my idols, he was Inter GK at that time.
Peruzzi should have been starter in that WC tbh, but he got injured .. anyway Pagliuca played very well
Nesta much better than Cannavaro for me. He was a giant already at Lazio .. probably the best CB I've ever seen

Yeah I agreed, I wasn't born yet when Baresi was in his prime, so Nesta is the best CB I've ever seen as well. Sad that he's so injury prone. And yeah Pagliuca played well in 98

Italy (4-3-3): Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Bonucci, Acerbi, Spinazzola; Barella, Jorginho, Verratti; Berardi, Immobile, Insigne.
Austria (4-3-2-1) : Bachmann; Lainer, Dragovic, Hinteregger, Alaba; Laimer, Schlager, Grillitsch; Sabitzer, Baumgartner; Arnautovic.
Locatelli is really replaced by Verratti. And Alaba plays left back this time

Re: EURO 2020 - R16 : Italy - Austria
injury did all sort of damage to Nesta ... he could have been even better than he already was ...
even on club level he was playing with pain and injuries ... he couldnt clock up full 40 + games a season
but in his full season without injuries nesta has been so pivotal at the back that he is a guaranteed performer of the season

Re: EURO 2020 - R16 : Italy - Austria
Someone read the Alessandro Nesta thread as when he retired I remember the forum almost unanimously agreed he was the best CB they have ever seen. Barça fans, Arsenal, United etc.
He quite literally was perfect.
https://www.trollfootball.me/videos/view/today-is-alessandro-nestas-birthday-this-is-his-tackle-against-messi
He barely tackled his reading was so perfect but if anyone can find me a better tackle than this let alone on Messi I would be impressed. Never seen anything better than that. Messi's frustrated reaction to it was gold.

I still remember. Because of him and his backline leadership was the reason prime Pep Barça did not strike even more fear to our backline back then.

No lol I was responding to Superstone , but this mobile version takes me some problems (editing or quoting)
I meant : Expected by me (about Locatelli on bench), because Mancini has always insisted with Barella Jorginho Verratti before Euro, it is his midfield
