Re: The US Politics Thread
Asking for only one side to compromise = nothing will happen. Ever. Complete stalemate.
The result is... Republicans will very likely sweep house and senate in November and also very likely the presidency in 2 years. Will reverse every Dem policy (even the good ones). 2 years after that, Dems will win elections and reverse all the Rep policies (even the good ones).
Rinse. Repeat. Everyone literally sitting in their trenches and the country continues to spiral downward because it's impossible to move forward.
This is where we're headed with closed mindedness.
Once US society is in complete tatters and people are forced to listen to each other and compromise, the country will move forward again... if it's not too late.

Re: The US Politics Thread
This makes no sense. How does this compromise you speak of look like? We'll give you this and this if you let the abortion ban slide? There's really no dialogue with fascists, and I don't really see how any compromises work with fascist parties. They'll keep chewing away at personal freedoms of citizens bite by bite.
Expand the supreme court, abolish the filibuster or at least make these fools stand up and talk for hours like in the old days. Do everything to reverse the idiotic gerrymandering stuff etc.
Anyway what should count in the electoral process is the popular vote, this electoral college nonsense need to be scrapped too. Why would you compromise with a party that consistently loses the popular vote

This is your compromise:

The Supreme Court on Thursday limited the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to set standards on climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions for existing power plants. (https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/30/-supreme-court-says-epa-lacks-authority-on-climate-standards-for-power-plants.html)

@sportsczy, who are these Republicans that Democrats should be compromising with? Name them.
Who are the Democrats that should be leading the effort to mend the partisan divide? Name them.

Re: The US Politics Thread
BTW I know this is about US Politics, but we're an international community, and I just have to say, as a foreigner that is impacted by US policy:
It's one thing if Americans insist of turning their country into a dystopian nightmare for anyone but the wealthy, but SCOTUS now going after the EPA is another case of the real threat of global terrorism fighting against human survival being embodied by Republican ideology.
I honestly feel for the downtrodden in America, my heart breaks with every school shooting, the reversal of Roe v Wade makes over half the population the hostages of a patriarchal system, and all that is very sad, and I have empathy for it.
But the environmental stuff? That's Republicans straight-up trying to kill all of us. People my age were already likely to see some really obvious impacts of climate change before we croak, and I always expected at least my grand kids to have to fight against extinction, but Republicans really seem dead-set on having us all boil before the middle of this century.
And SCOTUS is fucked for years to come. And why? Because a bunch of fucking moronic liberals thought "Hilary is not a good candidate?" You know, I can forgive Republicans (I can't, this is just a rhetoric device), at least they're reactionary, spiteful idiots dipping their toes in fascism, but so-called Liberals enabling a white supremacist (and for some reason orange) demented, and possibly bankrupt, real estate mogul to stack the Supreme Court with witch hunters and a frat boy just so they wouldn't have to support Hilary Clinton? Fuck those guys, fuck 'em.
Republicans are the fucking American Taliban, and none of us are safe from their shitty policy until the madness stops. Whether it's half of Latin America that has been plunged into cronyism, fascist tendencies, or swung the other way into pseudo-socialist dictatorships, that's basically the CIA fucking up an entire continent, whether it's the Middle East that's entirely fucked because W. lied about WMDs, or Africa, where for example in Uganda every day LGBTQ+ people are persecuted (and fucking lynched) because the laws outlawing homosexuality were basically written by American Missionaries, I just have one plea:
Dear Americans, if you want to fuck up America, that is sad, but it is your country, and we have no right to tell you what to do.
But for the love of (made-up, btw) Christ, stop fucking up (and over) the rest of the planet.
Some of us want to live.
As evidenced by us having health care, and not having that many firearms.

If any one remember Trump had mangad the economy well and had the greatest employment rate in history of US during this low international growth decade .
While Biden has tanked the economy and as usual he gets a free pass. No body questions the economic policies anymore.

America is a joke of a country. I know because I do business from abroad and I can see the decline in front of my eyes. Quite funny seeing Europeans and Canadians seethe over them pretending as if it'll affect their lives but the place is an absolute circus and the only good thing Trump did, was make it easier for us venture capitalists.
Otherwise it is a soulless empire in decline and the Americanization of Europe is by far one of the worst things to happen from there.

they've somehow managed to shift the conversation and convince their base that protesting and insurrection/attempt to overthrow gov is basically the same thing
and also that mass shootings are normal because there are "mass stabbings" in the UK, even though knife crime is much higher in the US as well

Glad you got me, I just meant to let lose with some banter, obviously also a lot of great ideas got turned into reality with venture capital, so it's not all bad. But, you know... The locusts meme is fun.

Re: The US Politics Thread
Thomas Massie is far better then anyone the GOP has to offer. There’s good on both sides.. and yes I include the squad on that even though I disagree with them strongly. There’s way more bad though and that’s the problem. Congressmen who just lie to their constituents and are only in it for “fundraising” and getting kickbacks while doing absolutely nothing in congress. Pelosi and the president (trump or Biden) consolidating so much power to themselves. Since Paul Ryan was elected speaker, no floor amendments have been presented. A ton of democrats could learn from republicans and vice versa. People have more in common then they’d like to think. Lobbyists in congress.. why do we let this happen? That’s insanely corrupt. Surveillance on us citizens. Police brutality. Rising inflation. Let’s tackle the real issues and stop side blaming.

Re: The US Politics Thread
Why do we let this happen? Dark money.
SCOTUS deciding to allow virtually anyone and anything to fund political campaigns effectively killed any meaningful way of the 2 parties working together for sustained amounts of time. It's far more lucrative for all involved (except for the voters) if everyone gets tribal and raises money off of each other's grievances.
Polarization drives profit.
And because everyone on the Hill is getting paid, there is no incentive to reform anything. That effects their bottom line and they can't have that. Hence why there are no term limits and no ranked choice voting.

I would have signed this 10 or so years ago. Right now you got to be joking. Let me just sum up German politics right now if you want to know what a "joke of a country" really looks like:
We have North Stream 1 and recently built North Stream 2 for gas from Russia. German economy heavily depends on Russian gas and there are no quick subsitutions. Cole bad. Nuclear bad. Gas bad. Yet renewables (solar and wind) make up about 6 % of the entire primary energy consumption of Germany.
Daddy America has prohibited us to activate NS 2 so it's not in use.
Daddy America has told us to sanction Russia so we've declared that we do not want any gas from Russia.
Due to a malfunctioning gas turbine in NS 1 the gas flow has stopped for the moment. Now everyone is freaking out right now whether Russia will reactive NS 1 or not.
I repeat: We block NS 2 and declare that we want to destroy Russia's economy and stay away from their gas. At the same time we shit the pants whether Russia will reactivate NS 1 because suddenly it dawns on us that people won't be able to heat their homes in the coming winter if Russia decides not to. Our minister of economy gives pro tips how to take a shower in less than 5 minutes to save energy. Our gas storages are also less than half full because we let Russian gas flow back to Poland so they can fill their reserves and act like they don't do business with Russia.
Inflation is at officially almost 10 %, in reality it's more like 25 % as there is nothing in daily life that hasn't gotten 30 % more expensive in the past 6 months. The Euro is becoming worthless each day. The health minister has ordered hundreds of millions of Covid vacciness that are unused and about to expire and is already threatening with new measures in the coming winter so the cost for healthcare will increase next year.
But luckily we now have a new law that allows people to change their gender on the passport once every year.
You wanted a joke? There you've got your joke.
There is no world in which the US will be a bigger joke than their European vassals, with Germany leading the line.

Re: The US Politics Thread
Renewables made up about 50% of energy consumption in the 2nd QT of 2022 so I don't know where your numbers are from.
Also while I'm not a huge fan of US imperialism, at the time Russia invaded the Ukraine Germany had to do something - and if this was what the EU could agree on, fine.
Inflation is hitting everyone, if anything the ECB is a bit late with it's reaction.
If you really want to call our country a joke, at least do it because our chancellor acts like a valium addict, the FDP is blocking any climate action while in a coalition with the Greens, and nepotism has lead to an absolute nimrod in charge of our armed forces.
But this is the US politics thread, so I'd point out that every single one of those bad things is much easier rectified than you can do anything in the US, which will be crippled until Citizens United ruling is reversed, because that essentially legalized bribery.

Apparently you fell for the propaganda. That number is most likely for private electricity consumption only. But electricity and private electricity in particular is a small portion of Germany's total energy consumption.
You thought Germany is run 50 % by renewables? It's 1.5 % from photovoltaics and about 5 % by wind.
