To praise Sweden for 6000 deaths while everyone in their region does better by an order of magnitude.
Sweden 6000 deaths
Denmark 640
Finland 340
Norway 260
Apply Sweden's model to a southern European context and the humanitary crisis would be immense.

I'm willing to listen to arguments for different approaches, but where I draw the line is the healthcare systems' capacity. There must be enough measures taken to ensure that people who need treatment will get treatment.

... which is not the case. And more people die due to being unable to see a doctor rather than from covid.

Interestingly, though even the government is warning about a Second Wave/Winter Wave, there seem to be to plan to tackle that.

Mayor of Newcastle cited households and pubs as the man causes of spread. Basically kids picking it up and bringing it back home and people going to pubs.
Pubs are just a nightmare for this. No distancing or masking, people shouting over loud music, poor air quality, very little ventilation, and lots of shared spaces including toilets.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread - Part 3
and after...what? How will we get out of this? Giving up our human instincts, wearing a muzzle and locking ourselves down at the house for indefinite future waiting for a magical vaccine? Even let's assume a magical vaccine is produced in the next 6 months, unless you round people up like Hitler did with the jews and force them to take it, then you still have some problem.
Then what do you do? Ban those who refused the vaccine from participating in the society? from having jobs? from flying? WTF is going on.
The vaccine will do one of two things:
1) Provide sterilising immunity to those who take it, protecting them from the virus. In this scenario, transmission of the virus will reduce significantly because there'll be a smaller number of people to infect. By proxy, those who aren't vaccinated will be protected OR the virus circulates amongst that specific group of people.
2) Reduce the severity of the disease to something more akin to a cold. While not ideal because it doesn't protect the most vulnerable who can't vaccinate, it would allow most of society to function "normally" again.
So even if people don't take it, you're either cutting off chains of transmission and making it much harder for the virus to spread WITHOUT all the distancing/masking/etc. or you're severely reducing the threat of the disease for those who were vaccinated. There shouldn't be a scenario where people are forced to take it.
This guy returned from holiday in Bolton. was asked to quarantine for 14 days but ended up going to pub crawl. Resulting in a city being in local lockdown.
All it takes is one idiot.
I bet the pub didn't take contact details, either.
Some pubs do it and others don't. It's the most inconsistent policy out there that the gov aren't exactly enforcing.
Little wonder that one idiot slips through the cracks and becomes a super spreader.

Why have other countries, like Italy & Germany, recovered better?

Re: The Coronavirus Thread - Part 3
I thought most of the country did follow the rules back in March... until Boris' own party decided the rules didn't apply to them anymore.
Nobody's gonna listen if some politician is allowed to travel around the country with symptoms and not be punished.
Also, this gov has:
- Spunked millions on crap PPE
- Still can't get proper testing facilities set-up and has to outsource to Italy and Germany
- Can't even provide tests for people with symptoms now because of a shortage
- Told everyone to "eat out to help out"
- Still can't get a contact tracing app up and running
- Can't even enforce it's current guiance
Yeah, no wonder people don't listen.

A Polish biotechnology firm said on Wednesday it has come up with the “world's first effective drug” for COVID-19.
Biomed Lublin said in a statement: “If everything goes according to plan, Poland will in a few months be the first country in the world to have an effective drug ‘neutralizing the virus’.”
Pretty sure they're full of shit

Re: The Coronavirus Thread - Part 3
Imagine a vaccine so effective you have to threaten and force people to take it.
met a guy from Bremen here last night, big Werder fan. He was like amazed how open everything was here and said in Germany nightlife is basically non-existent now, because if you give a set of rules to Germans "they follow it to a tee and they are obedient like the Chinese"
Poland is breaking numbers everyday, but it's just a positive to a test that may or may not be accurate. little changing in daily lives. can't see another "Zostan w domu" scenario even if we get to 10,000 cases a day @Myesyats , you agree?

Horrific scenes in Moscow*, today, as police manhandle, apparently peaceful, protestors calling for respect for civil liberties. Western governments will be sure to call out the Russians for this sort of human rights abuse.
