Re: The Movie House - Part 11
Yeah the plot was great, and finally I got to know the Hoffa story, because I've never bothered to read about it, even though it's so referenced in movies. I agree on depth of characters. Because of the slow pace, it allows to create that. But in the individual scenes, it still fell kind of flat compared the previous two. That's why I still rate Casino beyond this. Irishman is still my second best movie of the year, which is kind of surreal thing to say in modern movie scene. I've still got the Joker to see, but I already feel like it's going to be a let down.El Gunner wrote:Harmonica wrote:I think it there was a motive to take away the notoriety from the Mansons, at least that feeling I got. Kind of like indirect revenge movie against them. Genius, and I would be surprised if this doesn't earn Tarantino the third writing Oscar.El Gunner wrote:while i wouldn't say Tarantino presents the message that the Manson gang were just "mere fuckn hippies" i do agree that it was a phenomenal film, and my favourite of the year so far.
Watched Irishman, it's good, and one thing about Netflix is great, that it's a medium that allows lenghtier movies like this, with OCD generation. The acting again was fantastic, De Niro will probably pick another Oscar, if Hollywood doesn't really come down against Netflix too much. Other than that, got the mini series vibe from it rather than movie vibe, and I think it's too much like Casino and Goodfellas, yet not really getting in those heights. Anyway it completes a great gangster trilogy.
agreed, that's better phrased.
I feel like it had a more dramatic tone as compared to the aggressive nature of GoodFellas and Casino. Also Irishman it focused more on the political tensions within the mafia hierarchy and the characters felt richer than the Casino characters to me, and thus the performances were also better.
Would rank the trilogy like this:
GoodFellas
Irishman
Casino

On the "Hoffa story"
The movie was great but take the story it says with a huge grain of salt. Sheeran was lying in his book about a lot of things.

- Spoiler:
- He certainly did not kill Joe Gallo, there is proof of that. He was likely involved in Hoffa's disappearance but it is very doubtful that he killed him and that they had such a close relationship.

One of the best movies of the year. Hilarious, and a refreshing take on the "whodunnit" type of movie. Some social commentary mixed in too.
Recommend a watch to anyone. Regardless of how you feel about Star Wars ep 8, Rian Johnson has a lot of talent
Fantastic recommendation. This movie is fun, stylish, witty and just overall a great spectacle. Everyone should see it. 9/10 easy, maybe more.

Probably going saturday. Always love a fun whodunnit. Very far between them in general. They're hardly ever made and put into wide distribution.
Fucking love December. So much good stuff.
Irishman and Marriage Story already. Going to watch Ford v. Ferrari this week also.
Two Popes week after, and then Honey boy next week, then ending on Christmas Day with Parasite who I've been waiting for forever. Been hard to resist watching it online, but I want to watch in optimal conditions.
Little Women still the movie left I'm most excited for. But it's not coming until late March. Fucking travesty.

Yeah it's a movie so I always presume it to be somewhat of a fiction, but the story still was very interesting, and the overall feel was probably correct about his popularity.M99 wrote:On the "Hoffa story"

1917 is releasing on Chirstmas Day.
Also this French movie called I Lost My Body has been released on Netflix. Don't write it off because its animated or French, its a really good movie.

ahh thanks for this recommendation, never even heard of it haha, just watched it now... how do you interpret it?
- Spoiler:
- Im thinking obviously the story is told in retrospect, both timelines. I actually think it's a very sad story though, and I think in actuality he committed suicide (jumped of the building) and Gabrielle was some kind of metaphor/wish he had? Idk, very tough to piece together.
Overall i think it's a nice little creative, surreal film... but i can only say i really loved it and judge it accordingly if i understand what it is trying to say because it obviously deals with big themes of destiny and life after death/out of body experiences. And i think at the core there's also the grief of losing his parents - thinking he might have been the reason for the accident.

Ford v Ferrari was a good time, quite emotional too. Bale is just unbelievable, Damon was good too.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
The Irishman, yet another movie where De Niro's limited acting becomes apparent, especially compared to Pacino. Straight same face and emotions throughout 3 1/2 hours, irrespective what happens. Incredible how I notice this only now. Always had Pacino on par with De Niro but now I notice Pacino is the superior actor.
Special mention to Joe Pesci though. Famous for his raging, lunatic, small man syndrom roles. Played the more serious, reserved role like a boss.

The reason is probably that he’s a terrible actor.

Marriage Story - 8.4/10
Fantastic film. Definitely in my top 5 for the year. The acting is incredible and the film is very emotionally charged. Best performance of their careers for both Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, I thought.
These are the only films this year I've given an above 8/10 rating. (For reference, I almost never give an above 9 rating unless they instantly go into my all time favs list, last movie to get an above 9 was Arrival):
Endgame - 8.6
Joker - 8.6
Parasite - 8.6
OUATIH - 8.5
Marriage Story - 8.4
The Irishman - 8.2
Midsommar - 8.2

Knives Out was a lot of fun. The running jokes and political satires got big laughs and the script is tight and smartly written. Daniel Craig is the highlight of this star studded cast and got a real kick out of seeing Chris Evans playing his trademark douchebag role. Great film, Rian Johnson's best so far.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
One of my older movie loving colleague said his favourite film is The Warriors. So i watched it tonight.
It really had the vibes of a Carpenter film or a mad max film. I liked the setting and environment. It could have been expanded more though. Some of the gangs designs were cool. Costumes were incredible.
Enjoyed it. Although half the film i thought this might break into a dance off

I love The Warriors. That baseball gang gave me the creeps, iconic movie. Also really liked the PS2 game based on the movie. It wasn't just any game though, freakin Rockstar made it.

Re: The Movie House - Part 11
had the most awesome day at the cinema today.
Pain and Glory
5/5
Just a beautiful story overall. Banderas is great, and Penelope Cruz proves again why she is best when she acts speaking Spanish. She looked so motherly in the film it's incredible, which is spot on since the film deals with the protagonist's Oedipal complex too, amongst other existential endeavours.
Knives Out
5/5
Well colour me not only surprised but impressed. This is probably the best ever whodunnit made on film. Every little detail is of relevance, and the social commentary and message is sublime as well. And Daniel Craig's detective isn't actually just another schmuck Sherlock, he is the finest observer and mediator of truth - as he should be. Ana de Armas was a picture of purity and innocence
