One of the worst oscar nominated movies ever

This is why The Academy sucks, full of old farts, conservatives, and arrogant old pricks.

Inception is one fine ass movie but for me, i think everyone knows already what my best movie of the 21st century is.

Gylenhaal not winning for Nightcrawler was nothing short of a crime/infraction of the law, but yeah, Eddie Redmayne wins for portraying a disabled guy, DiCaprio wins it for acting in pain, something so easy, give me 50mil and i'll give you the best performance of pain you'll ever see. The nuances of acting make the best performances, the subtleties, the tinge or tingle of an eyebrow, the facial gesticulations, not teeth grinding and moaning sounds in the sounds on repeat for 90 mins. Same thing with Redmayne except you might as well cast a doll

roflrofl

Tom hardy's performance was better than his but not many will admit that. Still an amazing film though

Yep, and don't you dare admit that in public, lest you get lynched by DiCaprio apologists who probably also think he should have had 9 oscars previously

I felt Leo was better than Hardy. For one, Tom Hardy, bless his acting talents, once again used a bewildering terrible accent. Also saying DiCaprio just moaned and crawled is something you'll find someone in r/movies say just to get anti-circlejerk upvotes. He was brilliant throughout the film, the scene where he was trying to drink water from the ice with the Native American was where I knew that he gave an Oscar winning performance. Actually, I felt Fassbender might have had a bigger case for Steve Jobs. For Hardy, he was brilliant apart from the accent, but he wasn't better than Rylance that year at all.

Also Dark Knight getting snubbed is what caused the Academy to increase nominees for Best Picture from 5 to 10. It just about missed a nomination. I agree it should have won.

I'm not lynching anyone, I'm just stating my opinion. I actually think Fassbender should have won Best Actor that year.

The Movie House - Part 9 - Page 26 Empty Re: The Movie House - Part 9

Post by CBarca Tue Feb 28, 2017 2:04 am

Weird, I just watched it again actually. It felt weird rewatching it because I usually do that with movies I highly rate and nothing else, but I decided to make an exception for the Big Short because this time I had an advantage. My roommate, a finance student who is going into investment banking, was the one who put it on.

Sat down, watched it with him and had him pause it and talk everytime something confusing happened or something happened that wasn't properly explained, or not explained well. I think we ended up adding a solid 30-45 extra minutes to the movie in talking about financial terms, things that were happening, explaining what was going on etc.

It was a much better watch when I did this and I enjoyed the film. However, it highlighted why I didn't really care for the film in the first place. They try their best to simplify the story and to explain it well. They don't do a bad job, even. I don't think they did. Even with me admitting that, as I said, I probably talked to my roommate for an extra 30 minutes just to know what was going on more properly.

In essence, the film tries to explain something simply that isn't simple and when I watched it the first time, I found it highly annoying. Not only did I not understand half the stuff that was happening, but when I did, I had the feeling they were shorting me (pun intended) on what was actually going on.

It's the nature of making an entertaining movie about such a subject. It was always going to falls short in that regard.

That being said, the directing is quite good, the acting is great and the cast is stellar. Most of the other parts of the film is actually very good. Steve Carrell in particular was fantastic. It's worth a watch for the ending scene alone. I was actually going to post it here again today, because I watched the ending scene again. It's absolutely incredible how the ending of the movie captures what is going on in the United States right now.

Post by CBarca Tue Feb 28, 2017 3:17 am

Again, I don't think that the movie did that bad of a job of explaining things, but it could have been better. I would attribute this to the difficulty of making a hollywood movie based on finance and the financial sector and trying to make it exciting. They did make it exciting, but did they always do the best job of explaining what was going on?

I guess what I'm saying is, they did a decent enough job of giving people the idea of what was going on, rather than going into detail about what was actually happening. In some scenes, they did a very good jobof this (the jenga scene was really well done). In others, it seems like it was glossed over. I don't recall perfectly, but I believe the only time they went specifically into what "shorting" actually is is when Margot Robbie said that it was "betting against" [the bonds]. I hope I'm wrong, because that means they underlined the entire process of shorting a bond in two words, a concept the movie is built around.

Because I might be wrong there, let me talk about another scene, the synthetic CDO scene.

Synthetic CDO scene:

Again, we get the idea of how these synthetic CDO can take a simple investment and spiral out of control quickly (I recall the character Mark being astounded by this) and it gives the idea of how this happens and why it's bad. However, I have absolutely no clue what a synthetic CDO is after this scene. I stopped here for a while to talk to my friend about it, and he didn't know what a synthetic CDO is either. He said he had even learned about it, but it was complicated, and this scene didn't help much.

So let me extend an olive branch: you're absolutely right. I get caught up in a level of detail that wasn't present in the movie, and this is why I was upset with the film upon first viewing. At the same time, it is my opinion that by short-changing the audience in the way they had, or the way I felt they had, the movie suffered. Perhaps this is a personal thing for which I shouldn't judge the movie on (the way I am is detail based), but for me, it made it less enjoyable.

Out of curiosity, Pecadillo, do you work in the financial sector? I seem to recall that you do.

Moonlight - 8.2/10

The story was powerful in the first 2 acts. Very riveting and heartfelt. The characterization of a repressed shy, mute, individual was amazingly portrayed. But the final act was a bit underwhelming, it was very short and it left very little time for Adult Chiron to really close the film and show the 'it' factor that I was hoping would arrive.

Very well acted. Mahershala Ali and the girl playing Chiron's Mom were great. Deserved Oscar nominations. Though I don't really think Mahershala's acting was any more phenomenal than Michael Shannon's in Nocturnal Animals. They both deserved it so I'm not taking anything away from my main Mahershala.

The best part of the film was the score and cinematography.

Should it have won the Oscar? No I don't think so. It wasn't that special given that there were much better films against it.

Can I see why it won the Oscar? Yes. Listen, you would be crazy not to think politics were involved here with this winning. But that's not the only reason why it won. It's a good movie.

In terms of Best Picture nominees I have Arrival and Manchester by The Sea as superior films to this both of which deserved the win more.

Arrival - 8.7
Manchester by the Sea - 8.4
Moonlight - 8.2
Hell or High Water - 8.2
Lion - 8.0

Haven't seen LLL, Hacksaw, Hidden Figures, or Fences.

Probably would put Creed further up the list after re-watching. Looks good aside from that. The big Short would also be in the list at 9/10
