Specifically he's filming American Grit and the night Backlash happens he's in China.
Both factors mean keeping him off TV makes sense imo.

I mean it would make sense considering the only other guys to Beat Cena twice in singles competition in last 5 years is Lesnar and Punk.
I just don't think they want to take the belt off Ambrose yet but from a booking sense the whole thing would be a bit non sensical.
They have backed themselves into a corner that they don't want to deal with this early, on one hand you have Ambrose who to me has been impressive since becoming champion and on the other you have the guy who they put over massively at Summerslam.
I basically agree with Cas said before that Ambrose reign would be too short but at the same time I'm not sure you can have him beat the guy who kicked out of a top rope AA lol.

Lol they can easily write that. Have a Number 1 contenders fatal 4 way at Smackdown that AJ wins, or AJ just attacks Ambrose and goods him to a match.
Backlash card is really thin, only going to see the main event. Didn't help that this only had 2 weeks of build.

That might work but personally I find the idea of Ambrose winning then losing it the following month to the same guy he just beat to not make much sense.

I agree on the card mind you, looks like a standard brand exclusive PPV tbh.

At this point Bray looks like shit, first they ruin his backwoods anti authority gimmick by making him pseudo undertaker, then they job out him and his family, split them and put him on a solo path all the while booking him like shit.
And Randy is coming off of a beating after coming back from injury. He's not exactly carrying red hot momentum.

on the other hand Strowman is getting a monster push that Brey never dreamed off, for some reason being big and scary is not enough, you need to suck in the ring and be horrible on the mic to get pushed.

Looks like AJ is going to go on an unbeaten run until he drops the title to Cena. Ambrose really shouldn't be dropping the title. It'd give him so much cred if he could beat the guy, Cena couldn't.

AJ is pretty much the face of smackdown. Rightfully so too. I hope he goes on a long run if he wins. But Ambrose is a good champion too so i am not bothered

He was always going to win, Ambrose has been fantastic on the mic as champion but to be frank you can't go any other way here.
Look at it realistically, they are not going to have him go over Cena clean which so few people have done and then have him lose his championship opportunity.

I'm not against him winning the title against Ambrose. I just think the feud should have been stretched out more. I'd have done it like this:
Ambrose barely gets the win against AJ at Backlash
Ambrose disqualifies himself at No Mercy (double turn)
Ambrose drops the title to AJ at Survivor Series
I think that would have been a great storyline. I guess after that Ambrose could be written off TV and come back with a main event gimmick.
Then you could have AJ go on a roll until Royal Rumble where he drops it to Cena.
Instead, we'll probably get an AJ win at Backlash. A triple threat at No Mercy where AJ will win, and he'll hold the title until whenever Cena comes back. It's definitely going to be the case that no one is going to beat him until Cena does.

From a Kayfabe point of view it doesn't add up, if he was a heel (cheat to win etc) I could think of something creatively but while he's a face I'm struggling here.

This has always been my stance. Even with the Reigns cancer push in 2015, I maintained that he should still M.E WM31 over Bryan because Bryan was already a made man.
AJ is always going to be over. He's the most over wrestler with the smarks since Bryan.
I just think that win could make Ambrose more over with the kids/women. We don't really have anyone who is over with that audience bar Cena. More over wrestlers = better match ups.
