Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
I doubt you would
Maybe a draw against Portsmouth is a reachable objective
See i also have access to historic archives

Poch on diving: “Football is about trying to trick your opponent. When you do tactics, it is to try to trick the opponent. Twenty or thirty years ago, we all congratulated a player when he tricks the referee like this.”
He is actually encouraging his players to dive lmao

Hardly a surprise, I think almost all of the managers are. A single goal can sometimes be the difference between the manager keeping their job or getting sacked. All the players, all the managers know that winning is everything. Being blamed for diving for a day or two after a game is nothing compared to winning. Retrospective punishment is the way to go, not trusting the managers to instruct their players to stay on their feet.

Agreed with Art, but most would be smart enough not to say it to the press. What an idiot

Totally looking forward to any quip where other managers publicly encouraged diving from their players.

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
So, I figured RG had hand picked a quote and stripped the context, which he did, so here is the full article.
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/feb/06/mauricio-pochettino-dele-alli-dive-tottenham-trickery
Reading it in full, the context seems to be that Poch thinks that there should be no more focus on diving than on anything else. To Poch, if you dive you get a yellow card and that's it, and he doesn't understand the English fixation on it (he is Argentine, as a reminder, which maybe explains some of the attitude). He doesn't understand the media obsession over Dele's dive as opposed to the game as a whole. I still think it's a dumb thing to even comment on, and his comments have made the situation worse.
And to be fair, other than just because I wish for players to not dive, I think it would be best for Dele not to dive. He's got a reputation now and it costs Tottenham more than it helps. Stonewall penalty against Man U was waved away, and I suspect it was because Dele was the one fouled.
Also, Doc, BC's comment was that most if not all managers likely encourage players to dive (again, Poch's comment is taken out of context). Not that most if not all managers have publicly encouraged such behavior. Your post misrepresents BC's comment.

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
I know exactly what BC wrote and what he meant. I also know he is incredibly bias towards Poch so he and yourself would always try to lessen whatever he says and/or does to make it seem like it's all good in the hood when, in fact, Poch is publicly making it seem like diving/simulating is fair game...to which it isn't, not to the English anyway. Needless to say, I get what Poch's words or at least I think I do.
His footballing culture, what he grew up with and I must admit, so did I, is very much different than the English version. "Conning" the ref is part and parcel of a football game, just how it is. It isn't exactly frown upon either, in fact, you get the pat on the back for getting away with. Diving/simulating contact is just a tool you use to one up your opponent because make no mistake, they are gonna do it too and probably be better at it.
The English, for reasons I am sure Mole or other Englishmen here would say, are ridiculously fixated on diving/simulating contact to a point where other gross infractions tend to be brushed over. I really can't say why but it is what it is.
Also, found an article where Stam said Fergie told them to dive so...

diving in football is a bit like having a fight with someone and punching them when they aint looking. its not how you do things. you fight fair and may the best man win.Doc wrote:I know exactly what BC wrote and what he meant. None of them come out and say it in public, obviously, by how often do you see managers criticize their own players for diving? It's clear they condone it at best and encourage it at worst but don't want to face the media backlash of admitting it.Doc wrote:Totally looking forward to any quip where other managers publicly encouraged diving from their players.

Pep tactical session on surrounding the ref from all direction must be the stuff of legends.
"if the ref is moving forward, maintain distance and cut his lanes, if he makes a step back, GEGENPRESSING!!!!"

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs

Five games in fourteen days against 2nd placed Manchester United, SalahPool, GOATport County, bitter north london derby against Arsenal, and away against Juventus in the CL.
Spurs came out of it with three wins and two draws (two wins, two draws against the top teams). One of those draws also has two away goals in a two legged tie, so you could also say that's, perhaps, very slightly better than a draw.
Did anyone see Tottenham doing this well during this run of fixtures? Are we going to give Poch any credit for what is a pretty remarkable run during a set of extremely difficult fixtures placed extremely close together? It's worth noting that in the games where Spurs didn't get a full week of rest, they conceded twice in 2-2 draws, in the other games, they didn't concede. It's possible that fatigue did play a factor.

Don’t get carried away nascar. This is the best team spurs have ever had on the best run they have ever been on and are still below a Chelsea team who are playing that bad we expect them to fire the manager at any time.

Hasn't won anything yet, Spurs are still behind "lesser" teams in Utd and Chelsea and have yet to KO Jjuve. But yeah, Poch is a good manager, I wanna think that is understood.

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
Let's give credit to Pochettino and Spurs here.
Actually, the performances in both legs were very, very impressive on the whole.
The way they pressed, the way they controlled the game, they had Juve on the ropes and looking completely helpless.
It's only because Allegri has the ability to make a tactical move to change such a game, that they lost the grip on it.
Neither Poch not his players have the experience to react in real time to this, as it's hard.
I thought the way Pochettino approached this tie and set up his team was very, very impressive.
They completely bossed this tie, until Allegri bossed back at the end. That is the truth.
In combination with the group performance this has to be classed as a very strong CL campaign with an unfortunate ending.

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
wrong hans it's hur durr Poch is a fraud
Nevermind that a couple years ago Spurs were languishing in 5th/6th and getting battered by the top sides. They were the laughing stock of the league and north london. Now they've topped a CL group with Dortmund and Madrid and outplayed Juventus over the course of the tie. They've finished third and second in the EPL in consecutive seasons while spending close to nothing, and they narrowly missed out beating one of the best teams in Europe. On the local level, they've asserted their absolute dominance over the team they've lived in the shadows of for 20 years
Nothing wrong with going out to Juventus. Of course I'm heartbroken over the fact that they have and in the manner, but how many people actually backed Spurs to beat Juventus?

I sure didn't.
I was surprised at how good they turned up, and shocked at how Juve let themselves be dominated.
Pochettino has risen in my estimation with these ties.
