Nevermind that a couple years ago Spurs were languishing in 5th/6th and getting battered by the top sides. They were the laughing stock of the league and north london. Now they've topped a CL group with Dortmund and Madrid and outplayed Juventus over the course of the tie. They've finished third and second in the EPL in consecutive seasons while spending close to nothing, and they narrowly missed out beating one of the best teams in Europe. On the local level, they've asserted their absolute dominance over the team they've lived in the shadows of for 20 years
Nothing wrong with going out to Juventus. Of course I'm heartbroken over the fact that they have and in the manner, but how many people actually backed Spurs to beat Juventus?
They benefited from disastrous European campaigns in those years, which is always HUGE with the PL schedule. Only have to look at the teams that won it in the years Spurs did well in the league; Chelsea who weren't in Europe and LEICESTER, who weren't in Europe. Are Spurs better than they were before Poch overall? yes..but I stand by it mostly being down to individual quality of players AND the fact that the likes of Arsenal have tanked in the last few years. United too. Even Chelsea.

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
The point is Spurs are a team that have proven they can at least play with the best. They beat Dortmund twice this year, they tied Madrid and they beat Madrid 3-1 at home. Tied Juventus 2-2 in Turin.
It's heartbreaking and terrible and oh so Tottenham to lose today, especially the way that they did, where a more clinical Tottenham SHOULD have won the game by halftime (how did Kane not score? Then Sonny's goal, that's 2-0, and maybe you expect Son to score one of his other chances, but that's harsh).
That's not to celebrate the loss, nor to say that Tottenham have proven to be among the very best teams in Europe. They would have gone through today if so.
However, it is to say Tottenham's CL campaign this year was a fairly good one. Over time it will surely be another one of those "Spurs losses", but I think in time the tie will gain a more positive connotation. It's fun to laugh at Spurs now and that's fair enough, but I think over time it will be seen as a tie where they certainly choked it away, but one where they gave Juventus a real scare and outplayed them for a lot of the tie. It will hopefully be looked upon as a better result than if they just rolled over for Juventus, and I think a great many people might have expected a 2-0 Juventus win followed by a 0-0 second leg or 3-0 Juventus aggregate win.
Far better teams have been knocked out by this Juventus team without putting up as much of a fight. On one hand that makes it all the more tragic. On the other, it's something I think can be looked at as commended, or at least an experience to grow from for Spurs.

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
Big respect to Tottenham. First leg was a master class outside of the first 9 minutes but, like you said for Tottenham tonight, we should’ve ended that match and this tie by the end of the first half of that game.
We made adjustments and Tottenham didn’t, why would you when you played that well? But I do have to say, every time we did launch an attack it was quite dangerous. These CL matches are defined by these moments like the Kane chance today and the Higuain penalty miss in the first leg.
Also, I feel that Tottenham really did a fantastic job. Toughest CL group, win it and you get Juventus. Hardly justice for a proper team. These draws, almost as much as a team’s quality, do dictate a lot. Some teams just match up better with some teams compared with others.
Tottenham played as well as anyone has in the last few years- Bayern, Real, Barca. It’s not bad company. I’m proud we went through. We did the job, we made Eriksen, and Kane (as much as you can), much less impactful compared with the first leg. The substitutions for Allegri were smart and changed our shape each time. We had the ball more in the first half and we played directly rather than into Tottenham’s press. In the second have we used our width, which actually opened up the middle for Dybala’s goal.
After that, it was balls to the wall defending against a team that didn’t have the penetration to get through. Fantastic match and tie and respect to Spurs, always

Spurs were good. They would have progressed if they had gotten any of the other Brexit ties (except Barca). Would rather have seen them go through than many of the quarter finalists.

It probably has to do with expectations. Man United have Mourinho, so when they lose, non-United fans aren't merciful in their criticism. City are assumed to be one of, if not, the top contender to win the Champions League, so naturally they'd receive a lot of criticism if they were to lose at this stage. Tottenham are punching above their weight class and playing some entertaining football while doing so. A lot of people think that's admirable. Liverpool play entertaining football, as well, but they're a substantially more established top team, which means that the expectations will always be higher. They also receive more criticism from fans of rival clubs. As far as I can tell, the only fans that consider Tottenham a threat are Arsenal supporters.

You're probably right but I thought their approach was quite refreshing and unlike Liverpool, United and City, they won a tough CL group and out of the gate got Juventus... context does matter, there's just nothing wrong with showing humility. Tottenham have played their way into the top 4 and they have a terrific team

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
Not too sure what happened in this match they way they just conceded two goals quite easily, especially the Dybala goal. They made it too easy for Juve, and looked just relaxed too much or tired perhaps? Just lost concentration a bit or just a bit naive defensively.
On Poc... I dont know, still thought under the circumstances he could of probably done bit more, getting knocked out like this from such a position is disappointing.

'It's a massive situation that you must learn from,' said Pochettino. 'If we only see the stats from the two games, Tottenham was the much better team.
'Then in football it's not only about a better performance, stats, shots more on targets, or have more possession.
'It's small details. Competitions demand different things. Juventus are specialists, because they have habit to win, the habit to put pressure on the referee.
'The owner stayed in the tunnel before and during the game.
'Before game Agnelli, after the game Agnelli and Marotta. I saw at half-time how they put pressure on the referee.

absolutely unreal
His interview was relatively good though, this part just gave me a laugh

I'm sure BC would find a way to make Poch's words seem like it was misconstrued.

Mourinho level delusions. The guy encourages diving and benefited massively from not getting a clear penalty called against.

Or make it seem like it was a normal statement that does not warrant any controversy.

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
I don't want to say that Juve won because of the ref but it's also naive to read what Pochettino said and to think he lost his mind...
That is actually how big clubs win, they always have things or decisions going for them, specially against smaller club. They do it at the league level and all due respect to Juventus they were caught cheating, and they do it at the European level. Everyone tries to influence the red one way or another. Some clubs have a bigger sway with these things than others and that's also a fact.
I still remember the ref screwing Chelsea big time vs barca and all the decisions barca had going for them for a while. Their main man Villar, who btw was arrested for corruption in Spain, was out there working the refs for them.
So please let's not act like big clubs influencing the refs is some foreign idea that never happens.

Re: Pochettino new coach of Spurs
am I missing something though
the only referee influence in the game I remember was from Juve being denied a stonewall penalty
and then maybe Dybala being given a phantom freekick with like 30 seconds left in the game
Poch is just acting like a salty loser, which isn't surprising because it's easier to scapegoat others than criticize yourself plus again he's showing he's Mou's apprentice

Not just that, imagine if Kane's offside header that hit the post went in. I wonder if the talk of refs would have surfaced.

Hope whoever sniped Dybala from the crowd gets a retroactive ban from UEFA tbh. Went down like he got hit with a rocket ffs.

between watching Mourinho's football weekly and reading GL, I don't think I need to fake a brain injury. Fairly sure my cognitive functions are legitimately impaired. Lawsuit coming @Unique soon. Weren't you studying Law or something? you can represent me IMO.
