Re: World Cup 14 Squads Discussion
RED who would you pick over Johnson, Lampard and Milner?
I struggle to think of anyone, maybe Barry for Lampard but that's about it.
We just have no decent defenders other than whats picked and same goes for CM, those who have been picked are all we have.

Re: World Cup 14 Squads Discussion
Lampard and Milner's inclusion is questionable but understandable.
As for Johnson, I would stick Jones there. May not be as good going forward as Johnson is, but atleast he could defend, which is more important.

Re: World Cup 14 Squads Discussion
12 months ago: Substitute in LFC u-21, no team even in league 2 would take him on loan.
Now: Cafu flied an ocean to meet him, going to Brazil with England squad for the WC (Roy said stones and him are going to the camp with rest of the team).

Re: World Cup 14 Squads Discussion
I've already had a bit of a moan about it on Twitter, but it's a shame that Clyne and Gibbs have been overlooked, not just for this World Cup squad but for the whole season in general. Neither are spectacular going forward in the same way Baines, Shaw and Johnson are, but they're solid defenders, more so than the full backs currently in the squad.
Gerrard being the only holding midfielder in the squad is a worry, too. I'm not sure what Lampard's role in this team would be and would have taken Carrick or Barry instead to give us another option in case something happens to Gerrard.
The rest of the squad I'm happy with. If Walcott were available he may have gone instead of Milner, but otherwise plenty of good attacking talent there. It looks built for pressing and quick, direct football, though I suspect Hodgson will use a more cautious approach.
My starting eleven: Hart; Jones, Cahill, Jagielka, Baines; Gerrard, Henderson, Wilshere; Sturridge, Lallana, Rooney
Barkley, Sterling, Chamberlain, Welbeck and Lambert are good options from the bench.

Re: World Cup 14 Squads Discussion
that midfield looks like it will get ripped to shreds by every single half decent counterattacking team tbh
why has england after all these years in continental competition still failed to develop a competent defensive midfielder?

He should be starting. If not him, I'm sure England have some semi competent RBs around. Can't believe how lacking of quality this position is for England, to the point that Johnson is a certified starter, even after his horror show these past couple of weeks.Great Leader Sprucenuce wrote:RED wrote:Lampard and Milner's inclusion is questionable but understandable.

I understand all that tbh but when the seemingly best option is actually a CB by trade you know we have a major lack of quality as RB goes.
Johnson goes by default, we really have no one else.
