The way some here hype Athletico as if they are some European power house  Laughing

Isnt this the first time they have even qualified for CL QF in 20 years?

They're two pretty comparable teams imo at present without taking achievements into account also considering how both operate though you can say Dortmund are a bit better financially than them.

All the money is going towards the construction of their new stadium i think so probably that is why they(Atleti) have struggled to cling on to their best players in the past few years.

Atleti and Cezero inparticular have ran that football club like shit for nigh on a decade.

Its going to take a few years of CL qualifications before they are at the stage where they don't have to sell to buy.

Atleti have struggled to cling to their best players because they are a disaster in terms of management... they don't pay for their players.  They're forced to JV with 3rd parties like Jorge Mendes who then has full authority to move those players if he so chooses.  They're basically a slave to 3rd party interests since they can't self-finance anything.

Take the Falcao deal for example... of the 60 mil Monaco paid, only about 20 mil got into Atlet's pockets. Mendes and other parties got the rest. The shame of it is that the Diego Costa deal is similar.

They have no idea how to brand or market themselves and they just squander everything.

Until they start operating like a proper club, they have little chance of sustaining anything.

The comparison with Dortmund couldn't be more wrong.

they used Mendes to sign Falcao because Porto asked for too much money, they cant complain about how much they got for him when he was sold. And let's be honest it was a smart deal. They got an elite player who was better than the one they sold, and that guy helped the club raise its profiles in la liga and in europe. I think a lot of teams would take that deal.

As for Diego Costa, I think Ateltico fully own his rights so they will cash in with maximum effect.

Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk president Ihor Kolomoyskyi claims he is in contact with Tottenham over the possible summer transfer of Yehven Konoplyanka and believes the player could sign a contract with the north Londoners soon.

The winger was a January target for Liverpool, with chief executive Ian Ayre even flying out to Ukraine in an attempt to seal the deal on transfer deadline day.

Liverpool's bid failed, though, and Spurs are now moving to gazump their Premier League rivals.

And Kolomoyski claims he would rather sell Konoplyanka to Spurs – as London life is “preferable to Liverpool.”

"I have contact with the Tottenham chairman [Daniel Levy]. I am talking with him,” Kolomoysky told Ukrainian TV channel '2+2' .

“He is interested in Konoplyanka. We are in the stage of negotiations and are perhaps close to signing a contract if Yehven agrees.

"I would choose Tottenham - London - not Liverpool. There are matches only once or twice a week, and at other times he will still need somewhere to live. I believe London life is preferable to Liverpool."

Mateo Kovacic is increasingly frustrated at Inter and it’s reported Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United want him.

The 19-year-old midfielder has been a senior Croatia international since March 2013 and made his Champions League debut at the age of 17.

He had played relatively regularly under previous Inter Coach Andrea Stramaccioni after arriving in January 2013, but has increasingly fallen off the radar since Walter Mazzarri took charge.

Kovacic has made 25 Serie A appearances this season, but 16 of them were as a substitute and he was subbed off in four others.

According to Sport Mediaset, the young midfielder is frustrated at the situation and could seek a summer move to get more regular playing time.

Clubs around Europe are lining up to take advantage of the situation, including Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.

They will note Inter already let promising youngsters go before getting the best out of them, such as Philippe Coutinho to Liverpool.

However, the Nerazzurri paid €11m for Kovacic just over a year ago and have no intention of releasing him for less than €15m.

President Erick Thohir has repeatedly said he wants to build the team on youth, so Kovacic is a valuable asset.

Or because those players, at the time of leaving, arguably moved on to better things or better money?

Don't think that was what he meant. In Falcao's case I personally believe that had Atleti owned 100% of Falcao's rights he'd still be playing for them.

With regards to Atleti's back room staff and board I personally believe they actually have a good idea of what the club needs in terms of who they employ (coach, players etc) but guys like Cerezo seem incompetent with financing long term growth. Mind you if Atleti manage to have a great summer transfer window and depending on how this season ends for them they have a real good foundation to build on.

However this is Atleti we're talking about, a team who won the league only to get relegated a few years after while managing to sack Sacchi after just six months he was appointed manager during that period.

You'd think a team that regularly attract around 65,000 season ticket holders a year would have more stability but they don't take advantage of that enough imo.

Why would it matter if they owned him 100% outright? They would have been mad to turn that sort of money down for him.

Maybe but there was a good chance they would have kept him. Falcao is probably the best in his position bar none, at least when he was playing for Atleti it felt that way, Simione wouldn't agree to selling players like that. There was always a chance that Falcao would have opted to stay as well so he could play in the Champions League.

Who knows though.

Javier Moya, the agent to Sevilla defender Alberto Moreno recently announced that the Andalusian club would willing to negotiate the sale of the player this summer, but only if the buyer were able to meet their terms.

In an interview with Tuttonapoli, Moya revealed that Serie A side, Napoli had submitted a bid for Moreno this past January, but it was deemed too low and rejected by Sevilla.

“Yes, Napoli submitted a bid in January, but it wasn’t high enough.”

Moya went on to admit that there is interest from Real Madrid, but nothing is set in stone.

“Nothing is done [with Real Madrid] and my client is focused on Sevilla. Sevilla are willing to negotiate, but on their terms. However, that’s not to say that he will leave for the full €30 million release clause.”

If Atleti still had Falcao they'd probably win the league this season though. Atleti had just won the Copa at the end of last season and Simione was no doubt preparing his team to make a real effort to win La Liga, even for 60 million I doubt they would have sold him.

What was more likely would be them selling him after this season if they didn't win any major trophy. It was very likely that Falcao's price would have stayed at around 60 million anyway, there are not many elite CF's in the game right now.

Who knows though maybe I'm just assuming too much lol

winning la liga is worth 60 mil to them? not sure. i think they would have sold him and maybe signed someone else, like mata. They are just not in a position to turn that kind of money down.

Maybe not to Cerezo but you can bet Simione would think that it was worth it. Also long term winning the league could be huge for Atleti, it essentially takes them up to elite tier in the the football world and that opens many doors for them.

For a start they can negotiate a much better TV deal if they are champs, plus an increase in potential fan base by way of a calculated Nike campaign (and potentially a bigger Nike contract could have been on the table).

Winning La Liga would get you A LOT more than 60m in the long term due to all the reasons Zeal mentioned.

Personally i'd take winning La Liga over the 60m every damn time.

Diego Costa's agent is Jorge Mendes... i can guarantee you that Mendes has advanced monies to Costa so that he can live the good life before he got a bigger contract and that Mendes is also financing a portion of Costa's current wages.

So i am 99% certain that Atleti and Costa have both mortgaged themselves significantly to Mendes.

You have to realize that Atleti has debt issues AND owes back taxes to the Spanish government.  For them to operate at this level despite having no liquidity, they've mortgaged everything they could.

Jorge Mendes might be his agent, but Atletico have his rights. so they will be due of the money from the transfer. Also, they didnt need Mendes to pay aguero when they had to. let's not act like they cant do anything by themselves, and it's like costa is making 10 mil per year.

any kind of deal costa has with mendes doesnt matter.

Still wonder which striker we'll sign in the summer. We're only a "killer", Top Class CM & Luke Shaw away from the elite clubs.

When I say "killer" I'm not talking about players like Costa, Rooney or Cavani either. We need a Messi, Ronaldo, Ibra, Suarez or Aguero type of player.

A legit Top 10/15 player.

Why are people arguing over a move that hasn't even been suggested in rag rumour sections, much less by any reputable source?

And what a shocker, Dnipro are doing exactly what I said they would in early February: trying to get a bidding war going on Kono for the summer. Hopefully if he succeeds LFC simply walk away rather than waste time and effort on it. Attack is hardly our more pressing concern and there will be other options available, even if they aren't necessarily at the same level as Konoplyanka (supposedly is).

That's roughly £70+m expenditure though... not really an insignificant outlay.

The Mata, De Bruyne, Torres, Ba & Mikel sales will fund those transfers.
