Re: The Oscars 2014 | 86th Academy Awards
This thing is such a travesty.
No best picture to Rush nomination.
No best writing to The Way Way Back.
No best actress to Emma Thompson, and yet Amy Adams is there.
No Daniel Bruhl for supporting actor, and yet Bradley Cooper is there.
In fact, American Hustle in general is hugely overrated by these nominations.

Re: The Oscars 2014 | 86th Academy Awards
Yeah, I know, it's just funny to see them nominated. I hope they win.
Jeniffer Lawrence being nominated just shows how biased they are or that there was a real lack of decent female supporting performances this year. I mean she was funny in American Hustle but meh.
So long as Mcconaughey and Leto win best actor and supporting actor justice will be served. I'd love for Dicaprio to win since he's a GOAT and I loved TWOWS, I'd just rather him win it for a worthy performance.

Re: The Oscars 2014 | 86th Academy Awards
I really think DiCaptio was unbelievable in the movie, and the fact that he is nominated this year, when he was completely screwed over last year is a great indication of how great his performance was. The overdose car scene, is one of the funniest and best acted scenes I have seen in a long long time. Still waiting to see The other films still a while before they come out in Denmark.

Guessing half of you who have been only speaking of 2-3 films on the movie board, have not even watched the other performances who have been nominated-the lesser known films.
I duly hope your opinions are stemming from a complete perspective rather than handpicked performances you just truly enjoyed.
Then an opinion will genuinely hold credibility.

Re: The Oscars 2014 | 86th Academy Awards
Well to be honest, you don't have to watch all movies to know that Matthew Mcconaughey or Chiwetel Ojiofor will beat Leonardo. There is just way too much hype. It's also hard for anyone other than Americans to take part is this debate then, The movies won't come out in cinemas until early March in Denmark. Inside LLewin Davis is the last to premiere. So I have to base my predictions on a combination and hype.Arquitescu wrote:Guessing half of you who have been only speaking of 2-3 films on the movie board, have not even watched the other performances who have been nominated-the lesser known films.

Rush totally disregarded in the conversation is awful though.... Daniel Brühl was better than Jonah Hill imho. He was so amazing.

Re: The Oscars 2014 | 86th Academy Awards
And also it's pretty much all hype and bias. Silver Linings was by far the best movie of last oscar season imo. And Argo was really too boring for my taste. And also felt DiCaprio was so much better than Christoph Waltz in Django, and yet no nomination. It felt like a Hans Landa in a western. All I could think about after seeing that movie was Dicaprio and his skull scene. Waltz was merely an afterthought, and eventhough he is a good actor, he pretty much owes everything to Tarantinos amazing writing.
And De Niro also had a stronger performance than waltz in my opinion.

I haven't seen enough of these movies to properly judge, but I am saddened by Joaquin Phoenix and Tom Hanks, two actors I really like, not making the cut.
Chiwetel probably deserves it, anyhow. Spellbinding in 12 years. Though again, I haven't seen enough of the others to really judge.

Which the is the problem with the Oscars despite their prestige. It is decided by numerous political factors, higher billings and mainstream delectables to which make the nominees all the more predictable along with the subsequent decision.
Films involving an overweight black woman who is also victim of racism, or black slavery, or homosexual representatives etc have more weight than what someone would who is not in favour of the Oscar boards e.g which is why Johnny Depp will never win an Oscar no matter what he does. Another example? Jamie Foxx for Ray over DiCaprio which had its decision more blatantly obvious than anything else.
I mean Jonah Hill garnered a nomination for his average performance, essentially a nobody worthless actor. Sad.

It's always easier for a Supporting Role to have a lasting impact though, they can be much more intriguing than a lead role. So it's not really relevant to compare them. Supporting roles are often show stealers.

Re: The Oscars 2014 | 86th Academy Awards
That depends, Freeza. For example, if the lead actor/actress is able to carry the movie to which will likely be built around him/her, only then he/she can reach further intrigue based on screen presence and charisma.
Leading men in the form of Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Fassbender, DDL, Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington, etc have mastered this art while Leonardo still has some way to go before understanding how to capture the screen, without compromising technique.
Building the movie around the lead role, always depends on the actors ability to carry it.

Re: The Oscars 2014 | 86th Academy Awards
Leonardo carried the movie very well in TWoWS imo, same with Aviator. He stole the movie in Gilbert Grape.
Christian Bale in all 3 batman movies was overshadowed by supporting characters. And stole some himself, including The Fighter. Brad Pitt, Amazing as a supporting role in 12 monkeys, still can't believe he didn't win.
It's like that with every actor, the writing allows for more creativity for the supporting character.
Obviously it's not like that in every movie, but it happens some times each year.
