Pirlo out for a month


Juventus have confirmed that tests carried out on Andrea Pirlo have ruled him out of action for up to 30 days.

The midfielder was seen as a doubt for this weekend’s season opener at Chievo having picked up a knock during last weekend’s Trofeo TIM.

Again absent from training this morning, the Bianconeri have now confirmed the full extent to the player’s issue, revealed in tests.

Confirming the news in a statement, Juve report that as the result of a blow to the hip suffered during the Trofeo TIM, the 35-year-old underwent an MRI that highlighted a strain in his rectus femoris - thigh muscle - that will require 30 days for ‘complete functional recovery’.

The player will enter into a specific rehabilitation training programme and also be subject to follow-up tests on the injury in 15 days’ time.

It rules Pirlo out of potentially Juventus’ first five Serie A fixtures, at least the first matchday in the Champions League group stage and also contention for Italy’s first squad under Antonio Conte, to be announced this weekend.

The injury heightens Max Allegri’s selection issues ahead of his competitive debut on the Juve bench, as he is already without Alvaro Morata, Arturo Vidal, Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini for Week 1.

tbh I am a bit happy for that news I wanna see how the team will cope without Pirlo this year and I know Allegri will have more freedom to select his first 11 now and play style. I wanna see Romulo

I have the same opinion, however it is a sudden change of style and Juve may look bad in their first game of the season and if that happens people will call for allegri's head on a plate

I am happy too, but given vidal's not full recovery, Im afraid we may run short on MFs

True, the game play we had last year with that midfield was amazing until Pirlo came back... I bet UCL would have finished different to

He will be back... We will get him fit in 20 days... The match is in 18th and he should recover by the 17th I guess.

I don't think we'd try to get him back earlier than his reported return date, and if we do, he still needs fitness.

Allegri says he expects to have Pirlo back for the game against Dortmund.

Nevertheless, Allegri thinks Pirlo will be raring to go again on March 18 when Juventus defend a 2-1 lead at Signal Iduna Park.

"I hope to have Pirlo back for the game against Borussia Dortmund," Allegri said at a press conference. "We want to get through to the next round in the Champions League."

I will be happy if he always is fit, because then we have the opportunity to play either way. I won't say that I am against it or for it, because it depends on the style allegri wants to play with.

In my opinion, from now on Pirlo should be utilized as a 65+ minute super sub.

As stated above, he is too old to be starting games.

On BBC talking about the situation related to Andrea Pirlo. Paul Pogba will not return before forty days.
