2012:Ronaldo
2013:Ribery/Ronaldo

instead all the past ones went to Messi and this years will probably go to him again because its not about who is the best player anymore but who is the most likeable. Little innocent tax evading boy fits the criteria perfectly and Blatter made that pretty clear
Looks like much of the reason you're basing your winners off is who was part of a winning team that season. In that case why would Ronaldo get it in 2013?
You could argue for and against Ribery the same with Ronaldo. It ends up being your own choice about who had the best individual season of the two. Messi wouldn't even be in the equation. Many will say Ribery and many will say Ronaldo and all the discussions will he football based unlike when the other boy is there

I don't understand this discussion, it's not us who decide, nor FIFA, nor blatter, but the players and coaches. Yet some still say someone else deserves it because blabla. Ballon dor is subjective, just like any other list

but honestly, I'm not really interested in it and won't bother arguing how great Ribery is compared to etc.

because, if you ask me, Ribery, Schweinsteiger, Alaba, Lahm, Müller all deserve it more than either Messi or Ronaldo.

Thing is, we're a team. We don't rely on some single freak talent to score our goals, that's why based on stats, perception and star power none of our players will win it even though we were heads and shoulders above anyone else last year..

Messi deserves it every year, his playing wins it for him, not stats nor titles. he wins it without campaigns and media talks. He just does it on the pitch

Other two are just wannabe s

Which is why you are the favourites for another treble. Other teams should follow the same philosophy. Atleti do which is why they are one of the hardest team to beat

We still have time to become just that. In the last two games we have demonstrated our ability to all work for eachother and it has paid great dividens, the only downside to that is that it was without Ronaldo so we will see when he comes back if it was just a one off or if we are shifting to that type of football now

and Ancelotti is a great coach.

but please,we're not favourites for another treble. The fact that noone defended the CL title yet should make it clear that the reigning champions are never the favourites.

Messi 2010 [60 goals, Liga Title].
Yet that wasn't good enough for you to win a ballon d'or and you gave it treble winner Sneijder (who disappeared in the 2nd half of the year).

Messi breaks all sorts of records in 2012, yet that's not good enough for you and you give it to Cristiano! But, Cr 2013 who's far behind Messi 2010 and Messi 2012. Deserves to win the ballon d'or in 2013 without a single trophy Very Happy

Messi deserved each of the 4 ballon d'or he won, especially if you think CR should win this year (2013) based on individual performance!!

We started off really poorly but have become alot better now. Ill give alot of the credit to Carlo who hasn't been stubborn on playing a failing system despite it not working

Records are there to be broken. Don't think the Bayern players will feel like they have a mental block due to that. They all just enjoy playing together. infights happen which quickly gets sorted out, in fights happens with us that carries on throughout the rest of the season. It just shows you what team has the most mature bunch of players

Bayern are the only team I'd like to avoid until a final (if we get there).

But anything can happen between now and may so I am not drawing any conclusions just yet just naming the favourites based on current form that has carried on from last season

What are you on about? Sneijder that year was instrumental in winning Inter's treble as well as getting Netherlands to the World Cup final.
Iniesta was just incredible at the World Cup, and also surely he was pretty instrumental in setting up some of those 60 Messi goals.
Both would have been deserved winners.

What did Messi do when Argentine lost 4:0 against Germany? Was he better than Sneijder when Inter kicked Barca out of the CL?
Why would a treble win and a decisive World cup performance be a lesser metric for a player of the year award than goals scored against, I don't know, Almeria or Mallorca or whatever?

just who I think individually was best in the appropriate year. I would choose a couple of others over messi in 2010 who necessarily didn't win more trophies or scored more than him

Ribery has been great this season and you could just compare two seasons ago's ribery Euro performance to this years performances both in qualifiers and club and you will see. And this is why imo Ibra should be in there over Messi this year but thats not gonna happen because even an iker who hasn't started a league game since january makes the top five gk list then messi is simply not going to be taken off this list either

to be honest, I'd say Real would be the one team where I would be probably a little worried should we meet them in the CL quarter or semi.
All others I'd feel confident (DOESN'T mean I'm sure we'd win against them..)

However, this only applies if Sergio Ramos is not playing. If he's playing for you, I'd be confient he'd *bleep* it up somehow (like getting a yellow-red after 20mins or so)

THERE IS NOT a single CRITERIA!

Every player/coach/journalists votes for the player he thinks is the best and every one has his own opinion, way of thinking and what he appreciates in a player might differ from football fan to another = every one of the voters has a different criteria!

For example IMO, its a whole package. Trophies and team success should always be taken into considerations unless someone comes with a great individual performance like the Messi in 2012.

*In 2009, Messi had trophies "TREBLE" and individual performance [100% deserved].

*In 2010, Messi was individually the best, scoring 60 goals, winning pichichi, ucl top scorer and european golden shoe.

In that year, Sniejder won the treble with his team but he completely disappeared in the 2nd part of the season when the votes take place which affected the voting. Should he won, IMO Sniejder is a not ballon dor material and the way his level went down from that point proves that. Most important was he really the best Inter player that season, Inter won the UCl because of a well organised defence, milito was voted best seria and ucl player of the season. On the other hand, Xavi and Iniesta had a great year winning Liga and World Cup. And, in that year votes were split between them. Messi won by a very close margin.... Its a debatable year, but if the award should be given to the player with best INDIVIDUAL performance, Messi edges it and that's what happened.

*In 2011, Messi had trophies "DOUBLE" and individual performance [100% deserved].

*In 2012, no player won the double, treble and UCL winners Chelsea didn't have a special player on their team [they won the trophy as a team].

At the same time, Messi was breaking all sorts of records and having one of the best individual performances ever. winning all goal-scoring awards (UCL top scorer, pichichi and european golden shoe). It was very normal that he won the award.

*2013: Ribery has a stronger case than Sneijder because he's been playing at very high level since 2009 and he continued to play an important role with his team throughout the year. He can't compete with CR/Messi when it comes to goal-scoring records because that's not his role and not what he's good at! Yet, he scored 20+ goals a personal record!

Messi who won pichichi, european golden shoe, Liga trophy and was the best individually suffered from injuries and his injury against Almeria on 28 Sept is the main reason why people are talking about CR now.

Messi got injured on 28 Sept, was out for 3 weeks, played few games while unfit and got injured again. In this period {28 Sept to 24 November when CR got injured also against Almeria}. CR had a great goal-scoring run scoring 21 goals in this period including a hat-trick v Sweden in a very important  period of the voting which will affect the voting and might end in his favor at the end.

August 2013: UEFA player of the year, CR gets only 3 votes from journalists, Ribery 36 and Messi 14. All football fans so it as deserved and it is.

Its going to be close again like 2010 IMO. I want Messi to win it (because I'm biased), but taking all factors into account Ribery deserved the most!

Yes, but Pepe is a world class player when he's not going bonkers, Ramos imo constantly resorts to elbows and fouls because he's not good enough else..

sure man, understand that I'm not saying that Messi doesn't 'deserve' his trophies, obviously he does, I just think in some years other players should be honoured, as I said 2010 for me it would have been Iniesta or Sneijder.

This year, you know I can't even really motivate myself to lobby for Ribery, as honestly I wouldn't know who to pick from our team. For example, Müller was the best scorer, Robben scored very important goals (but was injured a lot apart from that).
To me it feels strange to single out Ribery, however he WAS incredible for us and he's arguably the only player we can't really replace when he's out.
The constant threat he poses and the nonstop action he initiates can't be counted in numbers.

Lol No criteria, they just vote for best player. Sad truth is that Messi is alone, nobody is close to him. In previous years r9 and zidane shared it. People thought they are best. Then Ronaldinho amazed them. But now CR simply can not amaze people and change their mind. He should do something extraordinary and i doubt it will happen with the way he plays

Platini: "The Ballon D'Or voting extension coincided with the play-off games for Portugal in which Christiano scored a hattrick. It's possible that FIFA chose to do this to appease Cristiano."
