i mean it's not the 'player of the century', but the 'player of the year' award.

it becomes nonsensical if actual achievements of the year in question are not a factor..

like back when Inter won the treble and Spain the World Cup, it should have been either Snijder or Iniesta.
Giving it to Messi back then was already ridiculous.

2009: Messi
2010: Sneijder
2011: Messi
2012:Ronaldo
2013:Ribery/Ronaldo

instead all the past ones went to Messi and this years will probably go to him again because its not about who is the best player anymore but who is the most likeable. Little innocent tax evading boy fits the criteria perfectly and Blatter made that pretty clear

well I'm not contending that Messi is more or less the best player ever..

but back then he bottled it with Argentine while Barca went out of the CL early precisely because Iniesta was missing, who then scored the decisive goal in the WC final, and Sniijder was phenomenal as well..

this year I don't know, I had the feeling Messi actually kind of was shit for the first time in decisive moments...

so unless you decide to just give it to Messi every year as long as he's around, NOW is the year not to give it to him..

Messi was quite decisive this year. Saved Barca in La Liga plenty of times while he was unfit, lead the comeback against Milan and played injured against PSG and created the goal lol.

As for the winner, I'm fine with whomever wins it. They all have good shouts on why they deserve to win it and all 3 of them played very well this year.

Wouldn't complain over who wins it.

Messi by default is always decisive for Barca, but it's not like they've been overwhelming last year, err.
i also remember seeing him miss some decicive penalty in, was it the cup final, or semi? And I remember thinking at that moment, "wow, Messi seems tired, Barca seems over it, I'm not afraid to play them in the CL"

Looks like much of the reason you're basing your winners off is who was part of a winning team that season. In that case why would Ronaldo get it in 2013?

You could argue for and against Ribery the same with Ronaldo. It ends up being your own choice about who had the best individual season of the two. Messi wouldn't even be in the equation. Many will say Ribery and many will say Ronaldo and all the discussions will he football based unlike when the other boy is there
