You either have to break some kind of insane record OR your team needs to win a major trophy.  There are no exceptions.  Yet people think CR7 is somehow going to magically win it??? please.  Madrid had to win a major title, whether it be CL or La Liga.  It didn't happen.  Only chance he has is if he beats Messi's CY scoring record

Messi is the only option other than Ribery since Barca won La Liga and we'll see.... but given the spanking Bayern dished out to Barca in CL, that's unlikely.

This was the era when the ballon d'or started losing credibility. Only thing you proved is how stupid those requirements are. Unless you actually think Nedved was a  better player than prime Henry :lol:or Cannavaro better than prime Ronaldinho

That's the Ballon D'Or though, it was Europe's best.
You need to check WORLD FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR award in this timespan.

One might find vision and passing much more important then off the ball movement and scoring, hence why there is a voting system, so everybody gets their say in the final results. Even if you would look at only statistics, its still a open discussion. You have goals + assists, but what leads to a assist? Was that also a contribution to the goal? There is no right or wrong in these discussion, only opinions and other views on what players need to be the 'best'.

For somebody who is a fan of players with high futbol intelligence and vision perhaps Pirlo or Xavi is the best player in the world. For someone like rwo- a goalkeeper is the best player in the world. Someone who likes dribbles and vision, Messi is the best player in the world. And another one would say Ronaldo is the best in the world because he scores from ridiculous ranges like no other. Messi doesn't have Pirlo's vision, Pirlo doesn't have Messi dribbling abilities, both dont have Ronaldo's long range shooting and vice versa. How can you decide for the whole wide world who is the better player? You cant, only your opinion on what makes someone the best can decide.

So, for me personally, i enjoy vision combined with high intelligence passes, dribbling skills and finishing. Again, for me (!!) Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Ribery and Neymar have these abilities more then Ronaldo and Robben. On other aspects, like finishing; headers; freekicks, Ronaldo and Robben might stand out more against earlier named players, but I dont take that in consideration because that is not what I look for in a player. The number 1 player in the world for me is the one who combines and balances all these factors from week to week matches, and for me that is Messi."

Messi is the best player in the world but because of his injuries in 2013. I would vote for Ribery, he doesn't have Cristiano's 60+ goals but he was Bayern's best player individually [also 20+ goals and 20+assists in 2013 are great numbers] playing an important role for the team that won the treble!

note: IMO, Ballon d'or should be given to the player with the best individual performance while taking into consideration team achievements.

In 2009 and 2011, Messi had both, 90% of football agreed that he deserves them [no debate here].

In 2010, I would have given it to Xavi.

In 2012, although he didn't win major trophies [League or UCL] only 4 minor: super cups, cwc and copa del rey]. Messi had the best individual performance in football's history imo and it was very logical that he won the award.

Great news for Cristiano Ronaldo and Ribery. Imagine if the voting took place in last 10 days of November or December with France and Portugal not making it to the World Cup!

It's not who's the best injured or fit player perfromance, it's the best player performance. And Messi obviously was the best player.

If its 2012-13, I would agree with Harmonica. Messi had more influence on Barcelona than Cr and Ribery with their teams.

But, its 2013 as a calendar year, its close. For eaxmple, goals+assists per 90 minutes in 2013: Messi (1.56), Cristiano (1.57), Ribery (0.95).

Above are just pure Stats, including team achievements and taking into consideration Messi's injuries. I'll vote for Ribery.

Interesting Stat, Bayern are unbeaten in their last 50 games with Ribery on pitch (ongoing record).

Did Ribery already make a special cabinet for his Ballon D'Or?
