That's the Ballon D'Or though, it was Europe's best.1991 wrote:This was the era when the ballon d'or started losing credibility. Only thing you proved is how stupid those requirements are. Unless you actually think Nedved was a better player than prime Henry :lol:or Cannavaro better than prime Ronaldinhosportsczy wrote:I went down the list of Ballon d'Or winners since 2000. Other than 2010 where Iniesta got snubbed, it went to the best player on the best club and/or NT winner that year.
2000 - Madrid win CL - Figo gets BDO. Would have been Zidane, but he had a very controvsial and bad red card in CL for losing his temper.
2001 - Liverpool win EPL, FA and Europa - Owen gets BDO
2002 - Madrid win CL and Brazil win WC - Ronaldo gets BDO
2003 - Juve win Serie and get to CL finals - Nedved gets BDO
2004 - Milan win Serie A - Shevchenko gets BDO
2005 - Barca win La Liga - Ronaldinho gets BDO
2006 - Italy wins WC - Cannavaro gets BDO with Buffon second
2007 - Milan win CL - Kaka gets BDO
2008 - Man U win EPL and CL - CR7 gets BDO
2009 - Barca win treble - Messi wins BDO
2010 - Barca win La Liga and CWC - Messi wind BDO
2011 - Barca win La Liga and CL - Messi wins BDO
2012 - Messi breaks the all time record for goals scored in a CY + Barca win CWC - Messi wins BDO
You either have to break some kind of insane record OR your team needs to win a major trophy. There are no exceptions. Yet people think CR7 is somehow going to magically win it??? please. Madrid had to win a major title, whether it be CL or La Liga. It didn't happen. Only chance he has is if he beats Messi's CY scoring record
Messi is the only option other than Ribery since Barca won La Liga and we'll see.... but given the spanking Bayern dished out to Barca in CL, that's unlikely.
You need to check WORLD FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR award in this timespan.

Re: OFFICIAL: FIFA Ballon d'or 2013 - Voting extended
Did you read my post below that one, explaining my choice?
"The definition of 'the top 3 players' in the world is different for everybody. One might find vision and passing much more important then off the ball movement and scoring, hence why there is a voting system, so everybody gets their say in the final results. Even if you would look at only statistics, its still a open discussion. You have goals + assists, but what leads to a assist? Was that also a contribution to the goal? There is no right or wrong in these discussion, only opinions and other views on what players need to be the 'best'.
For somebody who is a fan of players with high futbol intelligence and vision perhaps Pirlo or Xavi is the best player in the world. For someone like rwo- a goalkeeper is the best player in the world. Someone who likes dribbles and vision, Messi is the best player in the world. And another one would say Ronaldo is the best in the world because he scores from ridiculous ranges like no other. Messi doesn't have Pirlo's vision, Pirlo doesn't have Messi dribbling abilities, both dont have Ronaldo's long range shooting and vice versa. How can you decide for the whole wide world who is the better player? You cant, only your opinion on what makes someone the best can decide.
So, for me personally, i enjoy vision combined with high intelligence passes, dribbling skills and finishing. Again, for me (!!) Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Ribery and Neymar have these abilities more then Ronaldo and Robben. On other aspects, like finishing; headers; freekicks, Ronaldo and Robben might stand out more against earlier named players, but I dont take that in consideration because that is not what I look for in a player. The number 1 player in the world for me is the one who combines and balances all these factors from week to week matches, and for me that is Messi."
Plz, dont argue with opinions and taste, i dont ridicule you're name either

I agree on Xavi and Alves, but not Iniesta. Last season, Iniesta was brilliant until the Cl semifinal. He was also the player with the most assist in Europe.Harmonica wrote:Not because of last season.Valkyrja wrote:If Barca is so dependant on Messi, why are Iniesta,Xavi,Alves etc considered the some of the best in their positions ?

Why is this mentioned AGAIN? How is the GAP/DEFICIT relevant AT ALL? He got the 2nd place, if anything, COMPARE POINTS. Ronaldo still led Madrid to 85 damn Points, A WHOLE LOT. That "worst deficit ever talk"BarrileteCosmico wrote:Yes, because Ronaldo carrying Madrid to the biggest ever gap between 1st and 2nd in La Liga is worthy of an award...

Horrible example, totally different. Bron still was the best scorer in the league easily, considering his efficiency.Great Leader Sprucenuce wrote:Milito should have won it in 2010 not Sneijder.... Basically just to use a basketball example what Gil is saying is Lebron shouldn't have won MVP because he didn't score the most
GL pls.
In Football, nearly NO ONE checks shots per game/efficiency, for a good reason, Ronaldo > Messi.
People on here like "stats dont matter, he did this/that with his team"
Soooo, we compare Individuals, but shouldnt use Individual Statistics, lets prefer team stats. umm

Messi is the best player in the world but because of his injuries in 2013. I would vote for Ribery, he doesn't have Cristiano's 60+ goals but he was Bayern's best player individually [also 20+ goals and 20+assists in 2013 are great numbers] playing an important role for the team that won the treble!
note: IMO, Ballon d'or should be given to the player with the best individual performance while taking into consideration team achievements.
In 2009 and 2011, Messi had both, 90% of football agreed that he deserves them [no debate here].
In 2010, I would have given it to Xavi.
In 2012, although he didn't win major trophies [League or UCL] only 4 minor: super cups, cwc and copa del rey]. Messi had the best individual performance in football's history imo and it was very logical that he won the award.

according to @tancredipalmeri Already 90% of the voters have voted for the Ballon d'Or!
Great news for Cristiano Ronaldo and Ribery. Imagine if the voting took place in last 10 days of November or December with France and Portugal not making it to the World Cup!

It's not who's the best injured or fit player perfromance, it's the best player performance. And Messi obviously was the best player.

Yep, and it's not the most 100% fit player either, and voting has practically already ended, so the rest of the year doesn't matter anyway.FalcaoPunch wrote:Despite not being 100% for most and now the remainder of 2013?

The fact that voting almost ended, might be a positive thing for Messi (if that happened before his injury) OR maybe a positive thing for Ribery and Cristiano if they didn't make it to the World Cup!

These kinds of interviews won't help Ribery at all, he's basically begging for votes."Am I one of the outsiders for the Ballon d'Or? I could probably do with a bit more support," Ribery was quoted as saying by Le 10 Sport.
"I get the impression that the people in France seem to prefer Messi and Ronaldo and I really wonder why.
"I have been very strong in 2013, I was consistent all year and I won a lot of trophies. It would be a great honour for me, for my family and for my kids."

You're essentially saying a injured Messi deserves the balon d or more than Ribery, Ronaldo, robben, etc

Are you really that simple? How does not being 100% self relate to being best in general in any way?
I'm just gobsmacked it's Messi haters, that are using the injuries as some kind of excuse, when it should be the other way around.

If its 2012-13, I would agree with Harmonica. Messi had more influence on Barcelona than Cr and Ribery with their teams.
But, its 2013 as a calendar year, its close. For eaxmple, goals+assists per 90 minutes in 2013: Messi (1.56), Cristiano (1.57), Ribery (0.95).
Above are just pure Stats, including team achievements and taking into consideration Messi's injuries. I'll vote for Ribery.
Interesting Stat, Bayern are unbeaten in their last 50 games with Ribery on pitch (ongoing record).
