Lmaooooo Farrells character absolute legend
I enjoyed the first Ep, has legit potential. But the intro is one I refuse to watch ever again. Made my ears bleed.

Is the red haired assistant for Vinve Vaughn a red herring or could he maybe be Farrell's kid's real father? And Vaughn just gave up another of his associates to Farrell and thereby keeping him in his pocket.

What's really important here is that he called the kid a fat pussy and told a kid he'd *bleep* his dad with his mothers headless corpse.
And this is why he's a hero.

That was a pretty good episode to set things up. The acting is top notch and the characters are pretty interesting (and self destructive). It's got a lot of potential.

Re: True Detective || HBO
Decent episode. Farrell's character was the only one I really liked tbh. Loved the scenes involving him. That scene with the kid and his dad
McAdams' character was meh. Couldn't get into her
The other guy seems interesting. I am quite sure he didn't accept the BJ however the media got a hold of the story and spinned it against him. Not sure why he would want to commit suicide though. We'll find out I guess.
It's quite GTA 5-esque with 3 dysfunctional characters getting together at the end lol.
Let's see how it takes off with the next few eps
Direction was 10/10 btw.

Thought this was pretty good, but not great. It will very likely get better though. Much better.
Anyone notice the scars on Paul when he was in the bathroom?....that's how I knew he was probably in the military before it got mentioned along with how he carried himself. He must've experienced something while on tour that physically and emotionally scarred him to the point of the PTSD that caused his erectile dysfunction.

couple of quick musings post episode though;
the intro is terrible
I know season 1 had music playing throughout certain scenes to create/convey more strongly a certain atmosphere but I swear it wasn't to this extent, I mean it's playing like every scene, quite often randomly and needlessly IMO. IDK, it just felt like this episode was trying too hard.
Vince Vaughn
It's exactly this *bleep* attitude
Like what? Everyone all of a sudden expecting this season to be disappointing? Scrutinizing while the season has barely started?
WTF?!
It's only been the pilot and I loved it.
So what if the opening theme song is wank. A theme song doesn't make a strong series you know.
Certainly a lot of angles were thrown at us this episode, felt like a lot of the scenes lasted just about 2 minutes and it's testament to that.
I definitely also need to rewatch. I got a lot of it, except Vaughn's character, and I agree I didn't catch any names as well except for Kitsch's character which I think goes by the last name of Woodrow.
Anyway, I loved the overall setting; shots and scenery. Even though, as I said it skipped quickly from one scene to the next, I think Justin Lin did well on the directing front.
Farrell's character
"I'll come back and butt-*bleep* your dad with your mother's headless corpse on this lawn"
All of them (4 main characters) look like questionable characters, each with their own past. Pretty much like S1 with it's characters, it's sticks to the morally challenged characters. With neither taking the tag of "good guy/cop".
I think the story is going to progress slowly, but also careful enough to not get too slow. Some angles might also be integrated. Only concern I have is this going to be 8 episodes again like last season? Because there are 2 more main characters compared to last season and there definitely seems like there's going to be more exposition as well.
Also is the missing sister that girl Kitsch banged?

Colin Farrell ... Detective Ray Velcoro
Rachel McAdams ... Ani Bezzerides
Taylor Kitsch ... Paul Woodrugh
Kelly Reilly ... Jordan Semyon
Vince Vaughn ... Frank Semyon

Weill I watched it and found it quite boring... inb4igetflamed
The ending was really well done though. Got me intrigued and will definitely watch the next episode.
And I did not find the opening theme terrible Though the song the girl sang at the bar was better.

Nothing to be flamed about. I found quite a lot of it boring too. Specially the parts without Ferrell.
They are going for a Noir/semi-Noir theme so it is expected

They went too soon and too quickly into exposition time when it should be a gradual process spread into a couple of episodes.
Now that we are over it and we know these characters, they are together in the case and the plot advances more quickly.

Re: True Detective || HBO
Open to interpretation.
I wouldn't say boring, but slow paced and more attention to detail. More contextualised and puts it weight on the tone and atmosphere (freeza or RO can explain better than me though).
It's not everyone's cup of tea but it's distinguished which is a hit or a miss. Some films/shows pulls it off brilliantly while other may not so much.
It was an introductory episode so obviously no one knows which direction it will lead towards but the episode itself was extremely slow which can be interpreted as boring in parts.
It wasn't the best hour of television, but it was good enough to attract people to continue watching. As few have said in this thread.
I fully expect it to be good since it has a lot of potential judging by how events folded towards the end.

Re: True Detective || HBO
I honestly don't think it will follow a noir style. Okay, semi-noir maybe.
But much of that first episode didn't feel like that to me. Heavy with exposition, yes, but noir, no.
By definition: "focuses on cynicism and fatalism of its characters", yes probably, but by your explanation (which I totally get, I've seen a few noir films before) I don't think it will be like that throughout the season.
Season 1 also placed focus on its tone and atmosphere, but in a contained manner and that will be the same this season I think with a bit more focus on the crime underworld.

Re: True Detective || HBO
Finally watched the 1st episode. And it was mixed. Had its highs and lows.
But i like the way its unfolding. The slow burner style they have adopted, if executed to good effect can really be awesome. Always liked films of similar style. Hope it will be like them.
Colin Farrell so far has nailed it. But hope they wont make him another Rust Cohle in the future episodes. Need another identity this Velcoro character. Reckless and rash is a heady start. Just continue on this same path and at the end we will be getting yet another GOAT character.
Rest of the characters though we need to see them a lot more to get an idea. Barely so far they have strutted their stuffs.

Re: True Detective || HBO
Decent episode.
I still have a hard time adjusting to Farrel and Vaughn tbh. They're acting fine, but they're still too pre-loaded as actors for me. Maybe it will work later.
I love LA as a setup for *bleep* up crime stories so I'm happy about the setting. The beautiful light, the organized crime, the sex trade and the Hollywood dream factory mixed in this extensive cityscape is always an interesting topic for me.
We'll see.
Anyway, it seemed to me Kitsch does have PTSD but maybe wasn't in the army as much as a mercenary/private firms.
"The black mountain work, how hard are they looking?" he asks his superior when IA is investigating, and then says "Black Mountain, we were working for America".
You wouldn't say this if it was the army, the army is always fighting for America, that's not in question, and also not 'working'.
So apparently that was some private military job that is dubious.
There was one thing I didn't get at all (I was a bit sleepy watching):
There was one thing with a bald old guy with sunglasses sitting in the back of a car and then in a bend his head falls against the window.
This was intercut with McAdams and her partner driving somewhere, but he wasn't sitting in their car.
Anyone remember whether there was anything more about that or what that was?
My two favourite characters so far:
Farrell's old partner with whom he has to inspect the apartment of the missing guy/victim.
And Vauhn's assistant.

That "bald" guy with the glasses (can't recall him being bald) is the missing mayor which shows up at the end of the episode. No, he wasn't in McAdams' car. They didn't show the person who drove around the corpse of course.Hapless_Hans wrote:There was one thing with a bald old guy with sunglasses sitting in the back of a car and then in a bend his head falls against the window.

Re: True Detective || HBO
Any early candidates on who killed Ben Caspere the city manager?
My early suspicion is the Russian (I think) business man Osip. We don't exactly know much about Frank Semyon and Osip's past but he's surely a big candidate, for some reason he must've killed the city manager who held Frank's money which was going on the project.

You mean 'Caspere'? I checked, it's not the same person.
Edit: Yeah you're right it is Capere. For some reason I thought the hair and face was different but it isn't. He's being driven by a guy with a raven mask lying next to him through LA to the point where they find him in the end.
