Who did you choose as Male Shepard?
Re: Mass Effect Thread
In general my main concerns where quest design being incredibly fetchy and monotonous.
Side characters being incredibly boring, story being bad ( although i haven't seen enough confirmed about this to know) and the main character not living up to Commander Shepherd.
Reviews pretty much confirm all these concerns are coming to light, what it seemingly does well is the experimentation with builds, combat seems varied, fast, encourages movement and exploration seems legitimately fun.
I'll probably get it cheap at some point but there's too many issues with what matters to me in a Mass Effect game to get it right away.

Re: Mass Effect Thread
I was out this morning at work for a few hours so I didn't have time to check the reviews, but holy shit this game is getting destroyed.
I had seen the whole animation fiasco over the weekend and had laughed along with everyone else, but the writing is what had actually concerned me the most from my time playing the 10 hour trial through EA Access. It. Was. Shit. The characters were all bland as hell too.
As someone who has spent a untold amount of time and money on this franchise, from over 40 combined playthroughs to buying all the DLC and buying much of the merchandise, this is a severe disappointment to me. My love of Mass Effect had even overriden my hate for open world games and I was willing to put up with that tedious open world junk just to get more Mass Effect, but Bioware screwed up it seems.
I'll just wait until the full game gets added to the EA Access vault to play it again, I'm not wasting even £10 just to end up more heartbroken.

Re: Mass Effect Thread
Living upto Shepard was always going to be hard but where this seems to have failed is that the two variations of Ryder seem a cookie cut out of that younger but more whiny and PC style paradigm based on the dialogue to which is seems bland and very low-risk. The facial animation looks good but the dead eyes and flat delivery will add nothing to it. Shepard was a brilliant character and if these characters are not itll be paella without saffron.
Good idea on that btw as that'll inspire me to do the same.

Jon it's not very open world is it? from what i understand at least while the planets are open-ish they are not that big and some to have a linear path overriding everything.
I might be wrong though.

I remember all the "how sos?" I was getting when I said this game looks a lot like Inquisition.
Really really disappointed. Not getting it, reviews confirmed my worst fears about the game.

I'm sad and angry, how could you do this to this series? Was there no quality control? Did no one ever stop and think 'hold on this isn't right'? ME is one of my favoritr series and i was hyped for years for this to release.. only to become like this. I want to howl and cry
I need to play it and see for myself; see the horrors incorporated first hand

Re: Mass Effect Thread
I'm not so confident it will tbh.
Just because it's a well known series and it's EA will be enough to hold it's value for a while.

Re: Mass Effect Thread
2 hours in and i feel the animation thing is way overblown, nothing you don't really see in the ME trilogy, really liking the combat and the new choices system. The story has a more cinematic feel which i like, positive vibes so far.

Re: Mass Effect Thread
also why did they go super machine type route again with certain stuff? I watched tons of streams like I said and kept seeing robot fights and those super huge robot enemies the architects which look like poverty tier reapers? shouldn't have included stuff like that when we've had the geth and reapers imo, underwhelming in comparison
I hear the combat is good but I mostly watched some streamer who is terrible at the game and plays it like an FPS lol.

Re: Mass Effect Thread
I've enjoyed playing it more than watching streamers deconstruct it tbh.
The problems people cited were way overblown imo but I can get why some who aren't huge on Mass Effect would think it fell short.
Can't comment on it overall as I'm not far enough in yet but it's been pretty good so far.

Re: Mass Effect Thread
I've sunk a ridiculous amount of hours into this game since I bought it on Friday and like all other ME games, I felt like I've gotten literally nothing accomplished outside reading the Codex, talking to random people and running around doing side missions. I'm having a blast tbh. I didn't read much about the overall criticisms the game had, but from what I can see. It's been fantastic so far.
I really like the planet exploration part of this game, even if itt's not full scale planet size exploration. The shooting part of it feels rather stiff, but that's likely because I'm used to playing Destiny, which is just so smooth in comparison. I'm ok with MEA not being up to that standard though as the game's about a lot more than that.
My one true disappointment? None of the female characters are even close the knockouts from the previous games. So far at least. My Ryder is playing it straight down the middle so far.

Re: Mass Effect Thread
The world building is something i've always loved in ME, reading about histories, culture, planets, chemical compositions everything with that stuff is just really enticing. Consuming the Codex is a pasttime for me ever since ME1, its always been fascinating just reading about races, motivations etc.
The combat feels a bit weird especially with the profile system, but i guess they wanted to give players more freedom. I tend to stick with one profile (soldier) throughout. Other than that, i agree with shooting, feels a bit iffy, like im pretty sure i hit that guy but he took no damage. Reminds me of that Uncharted glitch where shooting a guy doesn't even register half the time. Its a minute issue as it isn't as common as Uncharted's. For the most part, the combat remains unchanged from previous ME titles.
Characters are great, i can see why they had less of a roster this time around, especially with the interpersonal story stuff. I don't see how female characters are lacking McLewis with the exception of Cora, PeaBea and Vetra are kinda in depth and have strong backstories supported with great voice acting. However, i can see what you mean when you compare them to say, Miranda/Ashley/Liara/etc. They lack a certain distinction, with the exception of PeaBee of course.
Right now i'm logged at 22 hours, just been exploring and running off doing side missions, haven't progressed that far, i finished Eos, Voeld and Havarld. Trying to romance PeaBee atm, getting there hopefully. Major decisions wise, i've been a babyface superhero saviour, like all my first playthroughs. Really enjoying the game, there's a few throwbacks, cameos and hints thrown to previous games, if you've caught any of them McLewis

So much time has passed between this game and the last one that a fair amount of the references have probably flown over my head lol. I've caught some though.

Re: Mass Effect Thread
Idk why the people who are convinced it is trash are so upset that the ones in the thread who have played it like it. If you like the Mass Effect trilogy, you'd probably like ME:A and it's definitely worth trying. It definitely has its shortcomings and seems like it was rushed (which it was) but, at its heart, it's a great game. It's a Mass Effect game.
