Football Italia Blog: De Rossi should quit Roma
Blog: De Rossi should quit Roma
Roma and Daniele De Rossi seem no closer to a new contract. Dave Taylor believes he needs to cut the apron strings and move on
Despite spending his entire career with his boyhood favourites, the last few years have not panned out as well Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi would have wanted.
For some fans the one-time clean cut, all-action muscle man has stagnated on the field. Then after openly admitting to a fall-out with the Giallorossi faithful, he aggravated the situation further by giving a clear indication that he is not averse to a move. Not that it has been too easy off the pitch either with a series of family issues.
His new demeanour with a beard, tattoos, highlighted hair and a bachelor flat in the heart of the city seems to suggest he is searching for something new. It all came to a head in July, as he and the club disagreed over his demands in a new contract. Basically De Rossi wanted more money and, despite optimistic signs recently, the papers are still unsigned over three months later.
I don’t think he should be unduly criticised for being honest over his demands. He has seen the way the club has messed the legendary Francesco Totti about and is perhaps thinking ‘will they treat me the same?’ It’s his last chance of a big contract and he is being straightforward with the club, the fans and himself by telling it exactly how it is.
The reality is that at the end of next season he will be approaching his 30th birthday and he has no real honours to show for his loyalty to the club over more than a decade. If the contract isn’t signed by next January, he will be free to talk to other clubs and could move on a Bosman when his current deal expires in June 2012.
The situation is causing concern at the club, especially as this season he has been integral to Roma’s turnaround since moving back to play in front of the defence in the last three games.
The Little Gladiator looks like the De Rossi of old, blocking attacks and being the first to start new passing moves. Yet there is a train of thought that feels moving further back is the easy way out, a comparative comfort zone for a player who was once renowned for his lung bursting runs from box to box.
There could be something in that, as when Azzurri Coach Cesare Prandelli picked him further up field for the 1-1 draw with Serbia, he reverted to type. Whatever the truth, he has obviously thought about leaving to win trophies, which seem a long way from coming to the Olimpico at the moment.
So does he leave and have a crack at serious trophies or does he content himself with the comfort mode of his home city and not read the predictable premonitory signs on the wall?
Of course it is distressing that he cannot fulfil his deepest desires with his hometown outfit, but it will be even sadder if such a unique player were not to realise his potential at all.
He certainly has no shortage of big name suitors with Manchester City, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal all showing interest.
For ‘Capitan Futuro’ it could be the right time for him to stop being the typical Italian boy who doesn’t want to leave his mother (or city). Jump at the chance to prove himself elsewhere and say Arrivederci Roma, thanks but no thanks.

Well, Dave Taylor is only about 6 months late with this one. At one time he may have had a point, now he just seems uninformed and ignorant.

What's worse than the article is the comment at the bottom by a milan fan... complete stupidity.

I agree, the guy writing this is out of his god damn mind.
He wants Daniele to be a club whore instead of staying in the club he loves, come on man, what u smokin?

Meh, Not really gonna read much into that.
Just happy that DDR is back in form. He seems to be enjoying his football again and I think that's a huge moral boost for everyone he plays with.

Fail on 2 accounts.
De Rossi is only 28 and WONT be approaching his 30th birthday.
2nd, with Roma's imminent progress, who is to say the cannot win anything?
The writer possesses the mentality of the players who go to Man City to "win".
DDR is in IMMENSE form.
For his last 4-5 games for Italia, his vision has been out of this world, frankly, I think he has done better then Pirlo himself for Italia in the previous games while his Roma form is also WC.
