I don't feel that way at all, i see him playing in the Regista playmaking role like Pirlo, i watch Madrid almost every single weekend.

When Madrid wants a DM they bring in Pepe or Lass (who i feel are awesome btw).

I'm not sure if he's top 3 but i feel he's definitively top 10.

there is always a misconception about the labels.

what my fellow madrid fan up there meant is that, Alonso is the player in the midfield that plays the deepest. he is a deep lying playmaker, and by his positioning, he would very often find himself the closest to the defense. He performs the tasks of a DM, but he is not a destroyer or an enforcer or anything like that. If anything, he defends more like busi and that's why he lead our team in interceptions and such.

It's more correct to say that he is a defensive CM to avoid the confusion, but the way he positions himself would have you believe that he is a DM.

He's not a top 3 DM or CM.

Anyway, whether he's at DM or CM he's just not in the top 3 there are better players than him in both of those positions, xavi iniesta and fabregas in CM and toure busquets and mascherano at DM. Unless we're talking about deep lying playmakers then he is top 3 for me in that role, alongside sahin and xavi.

dude Xavi is not a Deep Lying midfielder, he's an attacking CM.

Xavi doesn't attack, lol, he's more of a possession holder and he sits back, he supports the attack. Iniesta is an attacking CM.
